Eulogy to DJ Harvey - unsung second greatest DJ of all times

So it must have sucked to be you because the audiences over the years in Brighton or South London, Tokyo or California maybe they didn't have the ears, the attention, the sheer span - how could they? - to bear to hear it all, all of it, the deep down depths of it, the sheer funky librarian genius of it, the alientation, the lizard brain connection, the fucking rightness of the deeper sound so many have reached for that only you have plucked form radnom obliteration and have found and championed, the sound nobody can embrace, your sound, the right sound the sound of the perfect line that connects it all from that to this.

But lo, the message was truly the funkiness and it is overwhleming in its impact. And I am here to say Harvey baby, Harvey, holmes, no wonder the knickers come down! Beacuse you get there, after nerdy years of toil, you take it out and you blow it out and yes you became the second coming, the heir, the batton holder and its yours baby, and ours to share and you became the one who could go deeper and bring it back to the people.

Few can know this but I do. I hear it and I praise you for it. Now rest, rest, rest in the oblivion you have made home.

Aww...I hope not. He's a really cool guy with some of the most amazing eyes ever. I haven't heard him DJ though, so I've got nothing on that front.

Candicissima (candicissima), Saturday, 23 July 2005 06:16 (7 years ago) Permalink

as a dedicated disco and deep house freak, the suggestion hits me really hard. i hope he's not. so many amazing edits, amazing remixes - his remix of extended family's "ulysses" one of my favorite house tracks of all time, an endless layered samba breakdown over a thick vocoded vocal chorus, predating lopazz's "take me home" by what, ten years?

also his astounding dj mixes - his promo mixes for freshjive and sarcastic clothing were two of my favorite dj mixes of last year, throwing together funk (of the funkadelic variety, think EWF's "power"), heavy boogie rock ("space truckin"), prog rock (rush!!), disco and ambient library music.

whether he's passed or not, i hope someone compiles at least some of the awesome re-edits he put out on his black cock label.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 23 July 2005 06:26 (7 years ago) Permalink

please can someone confirm or deny this? he is close friends with a friend of mine. it's too late tonight to call and find out... but i certainly hope this is not true. long live dj harvey : /

please tell me you are just messing around! he is also very close friends with a good friend of mine who is currently travelling around europe and would be devastated to hear this. in fact i am devastated if this is true. the man is a legend. craziest dj i have ever heard too.

There's an mp3 of Harvey's set at last summer's PS1 Warm Up (starting again this Saturday kids!) available here:

http://ps1.el.net/web/podcasts/dj_sessions/

Haven't downloaded the set yet, so no idea of the sound quality, but I remember the day he played as being a particularly good one.

the moroder's at cool cosmic speed if i remember correctly

whats funny is everyone on djh hate on harvey jokingly too..if you post his name you will most likely get quashed!

the views on some of his threads are in the ten thousands..

he did play quite an amazing set in detroit! has anyone here heard him play?

Gary Abugan (henry chinaski), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 05:44 (6 years ago) Permalink

he plays at our bar every couple of months. actually we're trying to put together a night with him, rub n tug and tim love lee right now. that will be an AMAZING night. i once asked him what a record was and he answered 'i don't fucking care!' with a giant grin on his face... at first i was a bit bothered but then i realized i should take his advice and just get back to dancing.

his "lecture" at the red bull music academy event he took part in is hilarious! you can download it form their site, which i am too drunk to bother looking for right now.

That would be amazing. Rub-n-Tug easily the best party DJs in NYC right now. They have that special DJ 6th sense that allows them to know what tune the crowd wants to hear next before the crowd does. Every time I've seen them everyone in the room has been dancing like crazy.

gary, it's at the avalon bar in costa mesa, ca. it's in o.c., but seriously, their nights are worth the drive. i know no one goes south, but i would for them. we have the very honorable distinction of being the favorite place for all those guys to play in california.

I asked harvey about moonshadows (?) unfortunately he does'nt play there any more!

did anyone hear his mix for redbull music academy - i think it was called the trainwreck mix.

i saw harvey play a beach party here in hawaii just three days ago. a half hour before sunset he put on E2-E4. about 25 minutes in i went up to him and asked, "are you going to play this one all the way through?" he smiled huge and replied "of course, man!" it was dark by the time the song's 58th minute rolled around. the mixture of an epic sunset with an epic track orchestrated by such a master selector created something hard to describe. it will probably remain one of my top 5 musical moments for the rest of my life.

he helped open a gallery/club in honolulu (that's on oahu) a few years back. its a lovely place with a rooftop garden, art on the walls, and great staff/managment in one of honolulu's oldest neighborhoods. i just moved here two months back, but it seems like he gets here three to four times a year- he seems to love surfing almost as much as music. he may play maui from time to time, but i didn't ask, so i can't say.

grady (grady), Wednesday, 28 June 2006 22:07 (6 years ago) Permalink

not sure if either of these are the same as the "300" mix mentioned upthread but they're both awesome:

RA 300 was episode 300 of the Resident Advisor RA mix podcast, posted a few months ago; those two are BBC Radio mixes from the 90s, going by the URLs

Didn't make it to the end of the show last night but had an absolute blast. He was playing Sapphire by Zombi when I walked in...hearing a record that sonically gorgeous on a soundsystem that good was pretty much orgasmic. He also dropped an insanely long/insanely incredible edit/remix of I'm a Man by Spencer Davis Group (which I think is the I'm a Man/Yeke Yeke single by Clubhouse) which absolutely destroyed the place. Yeah, great stuff, nice'n'housey at the start then went full on disco. The crowd were good too, pretty much everyone seemed to be there because they wanted to be there and not because it was the hottest ticket in town.

Obviously Harvey looked as cool as ever. Shame I wasn't allowed to thank him for giving up his time the other week to do the interview with me.

Any other ILXors there?

Looks as though I might have had the same cynical pessimism followed by regret for Harvey @ Oval Space as I had for the Olympics. Still holding out for a residency at Plastic People or similar.

Interesting that some people hated the sound:

http://www.residentadvisor.net/forum-read.aspx?id=210331

toby, Sunday, 21 October 2012 07:04 (7 months ago) Permalink

tracer hand and i were also there! he sacked off after a while but i stayed until about 4.30 making dancefloor-friends with strangers.

i thought the sound was good but it definitely depended on where you were in the room - there were a few places of gorgeous clarity, a few places with a bad echo, a few places where it was frankly tinny.

c sharp major, Sunday, 21 October 2012 15:46 (7 months ago) Permalink

really want to find out what track it was he played at 4.20 or so that seemed to go on forever and was stupid dancing delight.

c sharp major, Sunday, 21 October 2012 22:11 (7 months ago) Permalink

I thought the sound was great but it was true there were "dead" spots, and sometimes a tall person would move in behind you and suddenly things would get muffled - it was a weird, morphing, multi-tentacled auditory experience which frankly seemed exactly appropriate

Harvey also used the volume knob, sometimes bringing the overall level down a bit for a good 10-15 minutes before slamming into something big; I thought it was tremendously effective and also made for a more convivial atmosphere in that you actually could chat with ppl from time to time

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Monday, 22 October 2012 08:52 (7 months ago) Permalink

I stayed to the end. He actually finished with Chilly, For Your Love, but then said thanks and yes, played Save a Prayer.

Anyways, it was awesome, but I wish I'd got there for the start and left a bit earlier. I'm too old for this!
