Hmmm... This band are great but so inconsistent. I wish they did more things like that instrumental on the Milkman album (track 4 i think). That was one of the best tracks I heard last year but I can't usually get over that lady's voice.

It's a fine voice but it doesn't suit the music - it's a tiny little high pitched Japanese child's voice wherea the music is big and bouncy and in your face. You want her to go mental but she just mutters gnomish Ono-isms over the mic while the rest of the band rage.

Is it likely there'll be some kind of singles compilation any time? I want the Come See The Duck 7" so bad but I've never been able to find it, even on Ebay.

I've managed to find the Return of the Wood M'Lady 7" but I can't listen to it properly because my record player is fucked and the channels are mixed up, and the B side has a different song on the left and right channels.

Wow, I guess I'm in the minority here, so far I've found this record to be really boring compared to all the other Deerhoof i've heard. Complete straight-ahead indie guitar rock, but maybe i'm missing something, I'm only twice through it... hope it grows on me, i was really excited about it.

it actually has grown on me a little bit, but the first few times I listened to it, I also had the impression that it was too indie for my tastes. some of it still is, but most of it is just a kinder, gentler Deerhoof

Patrick, is that comment sarcastic or not? I would say that the _songwriting_ might be technically more solid, craft-wise, but also say that the composition, in general, is not nearly as powerful or interesting, if that makes sense.

I don't think Deerhoof suddenly learned how to "write songs" - I mean, one of the reasons I liked them was because of their songs. I like when bands mess with songs, make them go B when I expect A and stuff like that. Greg Saunier has a great knack for doing that (kind of reminds me of early XTC in that way, still very "pop", but hyperactive pop). Runners Four is still basically Deerhoof structure, just a bit less, I don't know, hyper. Maybe this is their Mummer.

Sorry guys i spent half an hour trying to work out how to convert it to .rar or .zip. Then my girlfriend distracted me.

I will give this another go now.

And also I don't feel bad about doing a YSI for a band on an Indie because I have confidence that 90% of people here will buy the album if they like it. And if they don't like it then fair enough they can delete it and save their money rather than buy another useless product. And really, unless you're a raging capitalist who gives a shit anyway. That said I always buy the CD.

AND I cannot emphasize enough how much that this album has to be listened to in it's entirety. It is not just a collection of songs but a story as exciting as I am sure Homer's Odyssey was in his time. An amazing work which works on oh so many levels. I will continue to enjoy this with the same sort of intensity for years to come.

They sold out the Great American Music Hall in SF on Saturday night (capacity 600).

I believe their last hometown gig was at the Elbo Room (maybe 100-120 people at the show).

Definitely my favorite record of theirs. I can't get past "Twin Killers," and that's track 2. It's also nice to have the lyric sheet and see how she does some interesting things to fit the lyrics in. Yeah, loving this.

Deerhoof release their first straight-up guitar-rock album-- short, dense songs packed into familiar forms, full-bodied vocals for unabashed, often gut-punching melodies, less herk-jerk, less of that house-of-cards spirit that coursed through Reveille and Apple O.
