Is Dif Juz any good?

I never heard anything by them but it says they sound like Cocteau Twins.

Is that true? and Are They Good?

Michael Costello (MichaelCostello1), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 16:55 (eighteen years ago) link

they don't really sound like cocteau twins although liz fraser was on one song. I'm not sure how I'd class them aside from amazing. Both Extractions and the ep comp (Soundpool) are great.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 12 July 2005 17:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Dif Juz good? no. godlike? yes. Extractions is probably their weakest work. it's all about Who Says So and the EPs (Soundpool, more or less) for me.

Soundpool -- excellent. Who Says So? is a bit nondescript to my ears. I've heard most of Extractions and like it more, especially "A Starting Point". I haven't heard Time Clock Turn Back, though.

Soundpool sounds a lot like an instrumental version of Metal Box blended with Vini Reilly-esque guitar (although it's much edgier than what you'd hear on The Durutti Column's records). I can never remember what Who Says So? sounds like because it's impact on me has been so minimal. Extractions is more CT-esque indeed because of Robin Guthrie's production -- it's like Soundpool with a fair amount of reverb to make it sound more distant and less upfront.

That description of Soundpool sounds interesting. I know I've heard some of their music, but I can remember nothing of it (which doesn't necessarily mean I didn't like it, since I probably heard it on the radio, mixed in with lots of other things).

have been listening to this band a whole lot lately. ian's totally right about them being an edgier durutti column. soundpool and huremics are the best of the two. have been listening to "hu" a lot these days.

"Re" is also on the very rare Natures Mortes - Still Lives compilation, which (despite a few dreadful early 4AD tunes) has quite a few wonderful goodies on it, particularly the lone single by Sheffield band The Past Seven Days. God, I wish that band had made more. It's worth searching out just to hear "Raindance" alone, but then The The's debut single is on the compilation, and that Sort Sol single specially done for 4AD -- icing on the cake.

Dif Juz is somehwere between dull "lite jazz" denist office music and abstract experimental eno- type stuff I think. I actually think they'd be better with a singer. perhaps lou rawls?

Okay, come on, folks. I wanna hear praises. These guys are in my top 3 fave bands of all time. How I never made it to this thread I don't know. Anyway, I recently bought "Extractions" on vinyl AGAIN even though I had it years ago before I bought it on CD. Now I am a happy camper because I have the vinyl to match my CD. Truth be told, though, the Soundpool comp is the one I usually reach for these days. I saw the vinyl of one of those early 4AD EP's and almost bought it from sheer collector-itis, but thought better of it. If it happened now though I probably would buy it simply because I have more money. Well, they are one of the very few that could drive me to do such things.

Twenty Special Offer Stickers (Bimble...), Saturday, 10 February 2007 01:55 (seventeen years ago) link

Bimble, I saw them supporting the Cocteaus one time and they were awesome in context with the day and the venue (it was the Royal Festival Hall), but I never got around to owning anything of theirs. If I loved other 4AD stuff of that era (esp. Cocteau Twins, TMC, etc), where would be a starting point for Dif Juz?

David A. (Davant), Saturday, 10 February 2007 05:38 (seventeen years ago) link

Jesus H., David what year was that? Do you know what day it was or month? If so it would really help me, thanks.

I say the best starting point is the album Extractions, particularly if you are a Cocteau Twins lover. Incidentally, that's how I discovered them, as well, was through that album. Robin Guthrie produced it so I guess that does help. But keep in mind that on their other records they did very different, more spare, dub reggae-ish kind of stuff on their other records, which has never bothered me in the slightest, even though I'm only a casual fan of said genre. Anyway, so yeah, just start with Extractions. Robin Guthrie's lush sound (did I just say that? The irony is killing me...he produced Lush) really suits them perfectly, and they were in top form. Check how the drums are produced especially.

Twenty Special Offer Stickers (Bimble...), Saturday, 10 February 2007 05:52 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm not a big fan of 'Extractions,' but I haven't given it a try in a long while. The 'Soundpool' comp is where I'd recommend starting--those EPs are pretty ace.

I.M. (I.M.), Saturday, 10 February 2007 06:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks, I.M.! I was actually thinking of you earlier this evening...

Anyway I just wanted to clarify for anyone who didnt know (since Im guilty of assuming these sorts of things sometimes) that of course Liz Fraser does vocals on "Love Insane" (though I dont think thats one of the better songs on the album). So my point is, a Cocteau Twins fan really has no excuse for not owning Extractions or or at least hearing it.

(I apologize that my browser is once again not letting me type apostrophes)

Twenty Special Offer Stickers (Bimble...), Saturday, 10 February 2007 06:41 (seventeen years ago) link

Ah, yeah, if someone is coming from the Cocteau Twins angle specifically, 'Extractions' might make more sense as a place to start.

How's it going, Bimble?

I.M. (I.M.), Saturday, 10 February 2007 07:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I.M.! Glad you asked! I just found this cassette-only release by Manchester post punk band God's Gift that I've been looking for for YEARS!!! First I found it on CD and then the person who made me the CD miraculously pointed me to it on ebay even though I'd been searching for it on there for over a year!!! Wildest unlikely dreams came true...they did a song for Nico, too, which they called "Nico"!! Happy am I! The original cassette is mine, complete with postcards with liner notes!!!

Although I confess I'm now lazy and/or cheesy enough to be listening to Kajagoogoo. Okay I know it's stupid, but give me a break. I just had to hear that whole album again once in my life since I was...12? I'll likely never touch it again, I swear.

MY NAME IS FREEZER BURN (Bimble...), Saturday, 10 February 2007 08:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Thanks, Bimble, I'll follow that up.

Jesus H., David what year was that? Do you know what day it was or month? If so it would really help me, thanks.

I'm pretty sure it was May 1984. I just looked that up on Wikipedia, and it specifies the 8th. Hmm. Can neither confirm nor deny that, but I do remember walking out onto the Embankment accompanied by mad coincidental fireworks (after such intensity) over the London night sky, which someone said were for the Queen (birthday?). Aside from the unreal intensity and weird mix of introspection and community at that show, I already had stars exploding in my eyes being in the Big Smoke as a Northern Monkey, ha ha. Did they celebrate the Queen's birthday earlier in the year back in the mid '80s, because I know they do that in June nowadays? I don't know. Oh, and I also have a bootleg cassette of the Cocteau Twins (sadly no Dif Juz) part of the concert, which I'd have to dig out to see what the date says. It features (from memory) Liz Fraser stating her desire to be a cockney, among other highlights (the Festival Hall people didn't like anyone getting out of their seats, and a very embarrassed Robin tries to get the unruly rock fans [okay, that's priceless!] to sit back down or they won't be allowed to continue, etc).

David A. (Davant), Saturday, 10 February 2007 08:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Wait - what is this funky synthesizer instrumental Kajagoogoo did? What was it called? Oh yeah - it was just called "Kajagoogoo" - now I'd say that was a good precursor for Frankie Goes To Hollywood if there ever was one.

Sorry, not trying to derail this thread.

David A....May 1984...I will now look to see what gigs I have of Dif Juz...but as I suspected you have predated me by 2 years. You lucky bastard.

Robin trying to get them to sit down, that's funny. Well I tried to see him with Harold Budd last year and it was boring as FUCK. Sorry but it really was.

MY NAME IS FREEZER BURN (Bimble...), Saturday, 10 February 2007 08:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I love all their stuff, but "No Motion" is really something special - easily one of my top 40 tracks of all time. The rest is excellent instrumental 4AD soundscape.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 10 February 2007 11:21 (seventeen years ago) link

Normally, I think I wouldn't like a track like "No Motion"--it sounds. . . aspirational? soaring? in a vaguely U2ish way--but being instrumental probably helps it a lot. So while any description of it would sound awful to me, I can't deny that in the end I dig it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Saturday, 10 February 2007 21:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Just watched that video and realized how Explosions In the Sky sounds like an updated version of this band.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Saturday, 10 February 2007 23:43 (seventeen years ago) link

Jesus, Spencer that's a fantastic question! From all my googling and looking around I gotta say the evidence doesn't look too good in favor of a DVD. I'm shocked. I guess you could get it bootleg on DVD, though...but wow. They should have remedied that ages ago. VHS tapes degrade...

Anyway, the video for "No Motion" is on the 1987 "Lonely Is An Eyesore" 4AD artist compilation VHS cassette for anyone who doesn't know who would care. It also includes Colourbox, Wolfgang Press, Throwing Muses, Cocteaus, Dead Can Dance, and (Clan of) Xymox.

MY NAME IS FREEZER BURN (Bimble...), Sunday, 11 February 2007 01:09 (seventeen years ago) link

Anyway, what I like most about that Dif Juz video is the trees going by fast...I remember listening to Dif Juz on my walkman in the car as my parents drove us to the nearest big city, and I loved watching the trees go by really fast to the music. That really fits the song, I think and the title "No Motion". I also like the strange relationship the members of the band seem to have with the camera. Direct, but subtle at the same time.

MY NAME IS FREEZER BURN (Bimble...), Sunday, 11 February 2007 01:13 (seventeen years ago) link

Note that the drummer would later join the Jesus and Mary Chain.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 11 February 2007 01:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Is that so? I remember reading one of them became went on to be a computer technician...it was some clipping I had out of the back of the NME or MM about what happened to the members...wish I knew where that was now. I fear I don't have it anymore.

Anyway, yeah, in my opinion music doesn't get any better than "No Motion".

MY NAME IS FREEZER BURN (Bimble...), Sunday, 11 February 2007 01:27 (seventeen years ago) link

God, it's the twentieth anniversary this year for Lonely Is An Eyesore...I can't believe it. Can you imagine being 70 years and trying to tell people who the Cocteau Twins were? People won't even care, then, I reckon. I'm a pessimist.

Also, the This Mortal Coil video on that - "Acid, Bitter & Sad" especially throws for a loop, along with that last video by Dead Can Dance, which seems to say humankind will exist only briefly on this planet. It's scarier to watch now than it was then. That song was called "The Protagonist".

MY NAME IS FREEZER BURN (Bimble...), Sunday, 11 February 2007 01:54 (seventeen years ago) link

That is my favorite This Mortal Coil song, even the Xymox song is amazing.
