Right, so there's this thing up on the iTunes store today:

A compilation of New Order remixes past and present. Now, I love New Order to death, but my knowledge of b-sides, remixes and anything even slightly obscure stops at the Substance comp. So, are any of these worth bothering with? I know "Perfecto" means "Paul Oakenfold" means "Shitty trance to avoid like the plague," but the clips of the other tracks are far too short to tell...

Why would they choose the 12" remix of "Round and Round" instead of one of the Kevin Saunderson remixes?

I've heard many of those and they are all very good for the most part ... in particular, the video version of "Perfect Kiss" is a very interesting find.

I made a poor choice of words ... I didn't mean that it was impossible to find, rather, it's an unexpected inclusion on a comp like this (and it is somewhat rare, hence, its appearance on the rarities disc on the box set).

I have the Perfect Kiss video version on a Qwest promo 12". Don't know if that's rare. Also recently got a weird comp called New Order In Order, an orange 12" that came out just before Regret I think. Its from 1993 and says "COMING SOON! The new single due in early March from the forthcoming New Order album due in April". Then there's a sticker that says "The new single, "Regret" now due in early April." The tracks are Blue Monday, Age of Consent, The Perfect Kiss 12" version, Bizarre Love Triangle (ext. dance mix), True Faith Morning Sun Extended REmix and Round and Round 12" version. It's pretty handy to not have to carry copies of all those 12"s. I'd never seen it anywhere before

1. Normally Perfecto screams "RUN AWAY" but Oakenfuckers mix of World is excellent.
2. The 12" mix of Round & Round is the definitive version of the song. The intro is simply fantastic and outshines Saundersons mix. Not as sexy to like a remix that wasn't done in detroit but the 12" mix is better
3. The video version of Perfect Kiss on Retro's bonus disc was an edit of the full length video version as found only on the US promo for PK as mentioned upthread. This is the first time a digital copy of the full length version has been released.
4. The Pump Panel mix of COnfusion sucks.
5. New ORder - IN ORDER was also released on CD (for those fans in Seattle, Everyday Music has a used copy on CD for 10bucks. I got mine cheaper but it is a fantastic rarity with 7 or 8 great tracks in a row, very tidy little comp. Get it NOW!
6. I want the Orange Vinyl, have many New Order and related goodies to trade.

are you sure it's an edit? the version on my iPod is a staggering 9'56" long ...

that said: it claims to be "The Perfect Kiss (live take recorded at video shoot)", which suggests it's not exactly the same version that's in the video. mind you, given the NO tradition of mislabelling everything, this doesn't mean very much.

I've only seen the video for TPK twice, but I really don't see it as being that different from the recorded version--the only discernable difference I could tell was Barney playing the cowbell at the song's climax.

Which I mean is cool and all, but I don't get the Holy Grail status some seem to give it.

i am absolutely positive the version on Retro is not the same as the 12" mix. There are 2 video's too. One is the full length 9+mins and the other an edit appx. 5mins. I'm almost certain they are different takes too, and not just edits of the same take.

the Holy Grail status isn't really for the video but rather the rare US Promo 12" with the video version. The video is adored because it shows the band performing one of their trademark songs live in the studio. There are the old NO/JD posters on the wall, Gillian's lovely face turning nobs (ouch!) and making frogs sing, Hooky's black leather jacket and Bernard's coy smile even after JonDemme gave them specific instructions to not look at the camera. TPK is probably my fav. New Order video along with Confusion because it shows the band at a critical time in their development.

as for the PK video: it's a thing of awesome beauty. it was seeing the video (on neworderstory) that really made me realise what a fucking astonishing song it is; perhaps it's a trick of the mind, then, that i think that version is somehow better. to my ears it somehow sounds more muscular.

So I have both those rarities mentioned above! hooray for my New Order collection.

The Perfect Kiss video I have is on the Substance VHS, and it's def. not 9 minutes long. Maybe 5 or so, maybe more. The Qwest promo 12" version I THINK is 8 plus minutes long, I'll have to check.

The orange vinyl New Order In Order I bought recently from voice/new yorker writer Vince Aletti.

Salvation was directed by Beth B, the Bizarre Love Triangle video was directed by Robert Longo. They are both downtown NYC 80s art scenesters. My forthcoming Crazy Rhythms mix CD has a killer track from a soundtrack called Vortex released by Beth and Scott B, feat. Adele Bertai, Lydia Lunch, Richard Edson and other post-no wave folks. I've never seen the movie, and the soundtrack, despite having some of my all-time favorite bands on their(New Order AND the Cabs!) isn't that great and is pretty common.
