Hm, that's a good challenge we've made. Can someone YSI both those for immediate comparison? (Do not send the originals at all, plz.)

"NY State of Mind", easily. I can't abide the other one (though I haven't heardt he Langley School version - that might be okay).

As much as I wish heaps of thorny, bloodthirsty misfortune upon Billy Joel, I feel somewhat obligated to choose "New York State of Mind," if only out of civic pride. Also, the Eagles make me want to cough up my lower intestines and strangle puppies with it.

two very good, very different, capital-A american songs. as pantomime ray charles, billy joel in a walk 'cause don henley's voice is a good voice but not in that particular way. as a song, "new york state of mind" in a walk taxi, the grounded east coast fantasy easily trumping the hollywood cowboy fantasy for me. i think i'd rather have heard ray charles himself sing "desperado," though, 'cause i think there's more room for him to work in that one. i can't imagine what he would have done with "ny state of mind" beyond imitating his own imitator.
