In Praise of... Pretty Ricky

This is the most awesomely ridiculous Crunk-n-B. Three rappers + one crooner + slow jamz about wanting to play house + I'm not sure I even want to know what "Juicy" is about = fun.

They compare themselves to the Jackson 5 on their site (yes, they're brothers), but the real intersection is between, maybe, Boys II Men and Lil' Jon.

The album does drag a little toward the end, but they are gonna be everywhere this summer.

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

i dunno, their video is always the part of 106 & Park where I tend to channel surf.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:28 (twenty years ago)

Sorry Hillary, "Grind with Me" is not a good song. I don't hear the crunk, either.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

I think "Grind with Me" is okay, but not really one of the better songs on the album. It also tends to grow on you. (Also also: I am a sucker and a half for a slow jam.)

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:31 (twenty years ago)

I like "Grill 'Em" a lot - which should be the second single if they know what they're doing - but the record is super underwhelming.

Bonus points for the name, though, which is a super-obscure "Martin" reference (unless it's something else entirely).

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

Oh god no.

"Grind Wit Me" or whatever it's called is dreadfuk

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

dreadful, that should say.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Note that their image is certainly a part of all this. I lurve their image.

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:39 (twenty years ago)

You like their image? I think they look incredibly ridiculous.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh. Right. I forgot we must always be serious around here.

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I like a clown as much as the next dude, but there's something about Pretty Ricky's look that makes me a little sad.

Maybe I've developed a conscience and I feel bad about laughing at people. I sure hope that isn't the case.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Have you read their description of their group? They are familiar with hyperbole.

I don't think they're taking themselves too seriously.

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

"Grind With Me" may eventually seem like another notch on the progression of R&B, but right now I'm just not feeling their brand of aggro slow jam.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

'Hey dad, do you like "Rippin' Dey Assholez" by Lova Tru?'

'god no, son. I prefer something low key and tasteful like Jodeci.'

miccio (miccio), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

There's not a single song on radio now I like less than this one.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 10 June 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

This seems sort of sub-ave.

deej.., Friday, 10 June 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

theyve had a few great singles. videos are ALWAYS lol. song w/ sean paul is zzz. 'your body' and 'on the hotline' are terrific. death of static will prob give them earlier-than-scheduled crit respect, eventually

deej, Monday, 26 May 2008 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

'love like honey' video is O_O

Hahahaha...excellent.
But in all seriousness, Pretty Ricky can die just as instantly as B2K did although obviously in that incidence, the death was much more a bad thing.

VeronaInTheClub, Monday, 26 May 2008 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

you're a new poster here right? you should probably make an introduction thread

r|t|c, Saturday, 19 July 2008 01:24 (seventeen years ago)

remember reading ages ago that before they blew they used to be called pretty rickie & the maverix, and that there was an ACTUAL pretty rickie who got kicked out in a coup by the other guys! who then stole his name. the couple songs i heard from that time were terrific also.

Jim Jonsin (who produces, like, a billion hits today, including Lil wayne's Lollipop aside from Jamie Foxx's Unpredictable, Danity Kane's Showstopper, etc) used to be Jealous J of Cut it Up Def Records back in 1988/1989. He and his old partner Jock D were like THE turntablists of 1988-1990 outside of DJ Magic Mike and Mr. Mixx of 2 Live Crew.

Kooley C aka Calvin Puckett is the father of the entire West Palm Beach bass scene, recording more than once with Dynamix II around the same time, as well as Cut It Up Def, and having the second record on Luke Skyywalker Records.

These two guys both had a hand in the Pretty Ricky story from day 1. Kooley was the one who told me about the coup as it were. I think there're more, but I'm (surprise surprise) drunk.

PappaWheelie V, Saturday, 19 July 2008 01:35 (seventeen years ago)

yeah jim jonsin used to be so good around 2005, dunno why he feels the need to suck so hard now.

r|t|c, Saturday, 19 July 2008 01:41 (seventeen years ago)

i seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

much credit should be given to big d, either way

coincidentally, kooley c had a song called big d back in 1987/1988

PappaWheelie V, Saturday, 19 July 2008 01:44 (seventeen years ago)
