Was there a thread on this? Not really. Pictures work best, but off the top of my, er, head:

The Edge
Little Steve Van Zant
Paul Simon

Of course there are more ...

Marshall Crenshaw. When I saw him at the Bottom Line a few years ago, that hat he wore made him sweat so much it was ridiculous. I've seen a pic of him without the hat--he's pretty bald.

This dude from Ottawa who kicks ass, Andrew Vincent, has a song about losing his hair (and he's balding/bald/receding/whatev) called "Cover It Up" where he talks about all the pretty boys on Much Music hiding their curly locks under trucker caps, and how they shouldn't cover it up while they've still got it.

for the record. van zandt ain't bald so much as lost most of his scalp in a bad car accident. a little different than just the vanity of thinning hair.

clr (clr), Friday, 27 May 2005 19:22 (5 years ago) Permalink

either the thread took a wrong turn too soon, or the original thread was mistyped.

but what's wrong with not acknowledging one's baldness? It's just hair.

Are all rock stars, male or female, obligated to have neon signs pointing to their scalp where there is no hair? Is this the class in rock school I missed?

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 27 May 2005 19:34 (5 years ago) Permalink

Basically, my point is "not acknowledging" is not equal to "hiding or being insecure about", in this case. There's a BIG difference, in fact.

Also, speaking from experience...it is kind of a difficult thing to lose your hair, and I'd say most of us baldies have gone through a period of adjustment (or denial) about it....it kinda changes your self-image....but then you shave it off and it's no biggie, eventually.

x-post There's nothing wrong (obv.) with losing one's hair. But there are a startling number of rock stars whose hat covering said baldness has become an odd trademark - hey, look at this thing on my scalp meant to draw attention away from my scalp!

To me, that's as self-conscious as it gets, because every where you go you have to remember to bring along your trademark hat or bandana. I mean, out for a nice meal with the wife and kids, does Edge wear his beanie? Does Brian Johnson?

Not that I won't do the same thing when/if I lose my hair. And I totally understand. The last few times I saw Springsteen I wondered what it'd be like if he went bald. Would he return to his hat-wearing days of yore?

This thread seems to assume that hats and wigs are the only coverups employed. But there's a reason so many men switch to a swept back hairstyle in their 30s, and it's not just to look more "distinguished". On any live Nick Cave video from recent years, after he's possessed by the shakes, you can't help but notice his scalp showthrough. Even when these guys have every hair perfectly in place, you can usually tell when there's nothing underneath by the flattened angle it takes over the top/back. I suspect Bryan Ferry started wearing his hair this way because he DID want to look like a classic film star, but stuck with it out of necessity. Because matinee idols usually don't wear hats everywhere.

*In 30 years, has Rick Nielsen EVER been photographed without a cap?*

Somebody published a Cheap Trick biography about 7-8 yrs ago and though it was terribly written the book contained a lot of data about the band's early barband days like setlists (!) and a couple photos of a hatless Rick Nielsen. One from the late 60s where he was already thinning on top (proto-mullet) and one in-concert shot from about 75-76 where his dome was just about flat-out bald.
