I'm in love with 'Be Mine' right now. Simular sort of feel. The strings are achingly brilliant.

Probably still go with Annie though.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 19 May 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Heartbeat > Be Mine.

Its not so much that Be Mine is bad, its that Heartbeat was oh so good.

Xii (Xii), Thursday, 19 May 2005 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I had to download "Be Mine" to participate in this thread, but now I'm wondering why I even bothered.

"Heartbeat" pwns!

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 19 May 2005 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I like them about equally. I think I have a stronger emotional attachment to "Heartbeat," but they are both very successful and have more or less the same appeal.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 20 May 2005 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Definitely "Heartbeat", but only through context, I love it so much. "Be Mine" is still a brilliant song (with a fantastic video, if anyone's seen it?).

astropatty (adr), Friday, 20 May 2005 01:00 (twenty-one years ago)

You do realize that "Be mine" is just a nice little rip-off of "Time after time" by Cyndi Lauper, where "Heartbeat" is a Rembrandt. Case closed

jazzhooligan, Friday, 20 May 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really see the 'Time After Time' comparison i'm afraid.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 20 May 2005 23:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"My heartbeat" is so much more effortless; "Be mine" is quite nice, but it works up too much of a sweat getting there.

brittle-lemon, Saturday, 21 May 2005 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The "Time After Time" thing was the first thing I thought of when I heard it, too. The chorus melodies start out v.similar.

whenuweremine (whenuweremine), Monday, 23 May 2005 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

'Be Mine'. More driving, more swoonsome, more drum machines, a spoken word middle-8, more Lauper.

(Plus, my word, do you peeps twist your panties over 'Heartbeat')

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, i feel that 'Be Mine' has more to it. It's full of subtleties that we can all agree 'heartbeat' doesn't have.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

'Be Mine' is totally 'Time After Time'! It's very good though, not as good as 'Heartbeat' mind.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I like how people are comparing "Be Mine" to "Heartbeat" and "Toxic" - it sounds like neither, but it sort of does sound like one strained through the other.

I love it love it love it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 12:24 (twenty-one years ago)

five months pass...
She really gets Kate Bush-y by the time she starts really nailing the chorus about 2/3 of the way thru it (Robyn, I mean) -- lovely

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 11 November 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Oh wow. What a TS. It might be my second-favorite song of 2004 vs. my second-favorite song of 2005. I give up.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 November 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

"Be Mine"

'Twan (miccio), Friday, 11 November 2005 23:48 (twenty years ago)

i'm not sure what happened but "bum like you" just brought me to tears, sort of happy ones though

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 11 November 2005 23:49 (twenty years ago)

THE ROBYN ALBUM IS GRATE. I DON'T LIKE "MY HEARTBEAT".

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 11 November 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

annie needs to be burned at the stake

strongo hulkington's ghost (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 12 November 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

annie needs to be cooked a nice steak

Worst song, played on ugliest guitar (fandango), Saturday, 12 November 2005 01:18 (twenty years ago)

I like the songs with harder beats.

'Twan (miccio), Saturday, 12 November 2005 01:19 (twenty years ago)

relatively speaking

'Twan (miccio), Saturday, 12 November 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

I always sort of feel like "Heartbeat" isn't really as good as I think it is, but I'm always happy to hear it. I'd definitely burn out on it if I owned it though.

THEY ARE BOTH EQUALLY NICE REALLY AND THIS THREAD COULD GO ON TILL INFINITY is the sad, but true conclusion.

Worst song, played on ugliest guitar (fandango), Saturday, 12 November 2005 01:22 (twenty years ago)

This is still an ongoing TS in my head

Googley Asearch (Toaster), Saturday, 12 November 2005 01:32 (twenty years ago)

ballad "Be Mine" owns...otherwise, i'd take "Heartbeat" over dancey "be mine"

Jimmy_tango, Saturday, 12 November 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

robyn swears like she's a naughty 5 year old. yes, everything apart from kanichiwa nitches sucks 'de cock

mm i'd say any annie song by a country mile

micarl (micarl), Saturday, 12 November 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

fucken n getting in the way

micarl (micarl), Saturday, 12 November 2005 13:50 (twenty years ago)

I vastly prefer the Robyn album to the Annie but i think Annie's highs are stronger. But overall Robyn is more fun and less twee.

Hairy Asshurt (Toaster), Saturday, 12 November 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

I like "Heartbeat" but I LURRRRRRRRRRRVE "Be Mine".

Roz (Roz), Saturday, 12 November 2005 14:45 (twenty years ago)

"Be Mine" got me a little misty-eyed the other morning, which is something I don't think "Heartbeat" ever accomplished, so it gets my vote.

"Chewing Gum" (my favorite Annie) vs. "Who's That Girl" (2nd best Robyn on that album) would be a much closer call.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Saturday, 12 November 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Heartbeat, easily.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Saturday, 12 November 2005 22:04 (twenty years ago)

Annie fans hate pop.

There, I said it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 12 November 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Annie fans don't exist in real life. We are just kbits.

snowballing (snowballing), Saturday, 12 November 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

"Heartbeat"

one time gaffled 'em up (one time gaffled 'em up), Saturday, 12 November 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

M.I.A. fans hate Hip-Hop.
Sunn O))) fans hate Metal.
Sufjan Stevens fans hate tunes.
Madonna fans hate music.

where does this get us?

Worst song, played on ugliest guitar (fandango), Saturday, 12 November 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

I do like "Heartbeat" a lot more than the other tunes I've heard from her though... but it is a bit wispy. But it is touching enough that I can't give this totally to Robyn at all.

I'm happy for this to exist on a jukebox somewhere, or be reminded of it on MTV one day, without ever really needing to hear it 1XXX times myself.

Worst song, played on ugliest guitar (fandango), Saturday, 12 November 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

Be Mine when i sit down with headphones and can appreciate everything i like about it
Heartbeat when i'm on the dancefloor with my woman

lemin (lemin), Saturday, 12 November 2005 22:33 (twenty years ago)

Finally seeing Annie live was such an unbelievable disappointment, and it's hard for me to un-remember that feeling. I expected attitude, and she definitely had attitude; unfortunately, it was the attitude of someone who's wondering if she left the oven on.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 12 November 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

But seriously folks. Maybe it was just an off night, I dunno, but I was devastated!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 13 November 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

I really enjoyed Annie live, but I didn't expect much. I certainly didn't risk devastation. Some songs were kinda z but the bass was louder, her voice was a little less treacly and the guitar-programming-vocal line up gave the thing a nice Cocteau Twins quality.

'Twan (miccio), Sunday, 13 November 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

But she was so glazed over, it was like somebody had slipped her a roofie

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 13 November 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Not in Philly!

'Twan (miccio), Sunday, 13 November 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

I think the show would have been a lot worse if she wasn't bracketed by doofy, giddy dudes with bad hair. It's the Debby Harry vs. Blondie deal. Amiable goofballs (dude in dreads tapping on a snare?) make for a nice contract.

'Twan (miccio), Sunday, 13 November 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

contrast, rather

'Twan (miccio), Sunday, 13 November 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

That said, I have no idea what people who see her as some savior of pop or whatever were expecting in the first place.

'Twan (miccio), Sunday, 13 November 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

I was expecting techno and pop combined in one irresistably fey yet leather-booted front woman!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 13 November 2005 20:45 (twenty years ago)

I'm an Annie fan and I do hate a lot of pop, it's true.

I might pick 'Be Mine' here though, maybe just because it's fresher to me.

'Anniemal' is one of the best albums of the decade.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Sunday, 13 November 2005 20:54 (twenty years ago)

Robyn live might be interesting. Annie sux at it.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Sunday, 13 November 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

Isn't being good live a bit rockist ? Ha ha

snowballing (snowballing), Sunday, 13 November 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

can I choose "heartbeat" having only heard rex the dog's mix of it?

etc, Sunday, 13 November 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha: Robyn vs Annie? The Answer is: The Knife.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 13 November 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

The Knife have some pretty interesting videos

Acid house girls and flowers (fandango), Sunday, 13 November 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

haha oh no, need more coffee! my brane was trying really hard to shoehorn the "feel my heartbeats" bit itno the rex knife remix, too!

etc, Sunday, 13 November 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

I had a dream a few weeks ago about a compilation where every song title was some variation on "Heart Beat". It had Annie and The Knife, but I also remember the following:

Sugababes - Hearts Beat In Time
Hillary Duff - My Heart is Still Beating

I didn't hear it, but I held it in my hands and thought "this is probably the best thing ever."

and Princess Superstar had some weird mashup tune whose name I can't remember but, if I reconstruct my dream, was probably something like "Beat That Bitch With a Bit (Open Heart Surgery Mix)". I thought this might be the weak link.

Sorry for sharing this with you all.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 13 November 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

Love You from the Heart (beat)

Kevin Blechdom rulllles that compilation!

Also Heart - These Dreams :)

Acid house girls and flowers (fandango), Sunday, 13 November 2005 23:31 (twenty years ago)

(sorry for hijacking your dream :( )

Acid house girls and flowers (fandango), Sunday, 13 November 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

Gah Tim, that's beautiful :)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Sunday, 13 November 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Annie by a mile

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Monday, 14 November 2005 08:04 (twenty years ago)

"Hillary Duff - My Heart is Still Beating"

OMG Hillary's new single is actually called "Beat of my Heart"!!!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 19 November 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

Heartbeat is pretty good.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 19 November 2005 01:59 (twenty years ago)

omg Tim your dreams are pop-prophetic!

(can someone make that compilation please?)

spontine (cis), Saturday, 19 November 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Revive -- I just heard both for the first time!

"Be Mine" sounds like the work of a 14 year-old girl. And "My Heartbeat" has the more irresistable melody by a LONGshot.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 7 January 2006 05:36 (twenty years ago)

What a weird thing to lie about.

Zwan (miccio), Saturday, 7 January 2006 06:18 (twenty years ago)

Not as weird a thing as itis to call someone out on.

Besides, two weeks ago doesn't count as "just"?

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 7 January 2006 06:29 (twenty years ago)

i just thought it was funny, dude. but if you want to have this conversation again, go ahead.

Zwan (miccio), Saturday, 7 January 2006 06:30 (twenty years ago)

I guess it's just late and I'm not following.

Anyway, to be clear: what sounds like the work of a 14 year-old girl isn't the product per se but the voice, melody and overall sentiment. While I can appreciate the whole schtick Robyn has going, "Be Mine!" just has a kind of crummy teen pop feel to it.

And on the other hand, I've listened to "Heartbeat" about 10 or 15 times tonight -- let's put it this way: it's effective.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 7 January 2006 06:35 (twenty years ago)

But also: as good as it is, I think it's possible "Heartbeat" is overvalued in the current market.

So there.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 7 January 2006 06:58 (twenty years ago)
