Best Music Torrent Sites That Aren't Oink or IndieTorrents

Anyone know of any good music-oriented torrent sites with strong selections along the same lines as Oink or IndieTorrents (by which I mean they're well-populated by ILX0R-type music obsessives with broad tastes) but at which you can still sign up for an account with relative ease? Both of those sites are Skull & Bones secret societies now, and while receiving an invite to one of them would be hot shit, I'm too lazy to jump through the necessary hoops. So?

TAKE A LOOK AT THESE HANDS!!!, Sunday, 15 May 2005 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

There isn't one. Try Soulseek.

Xii (Xii), Sunday, 15 May 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Torrentspy.com

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 15 May 2005 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, I take that back. They cater to more 'mainstream' tastes.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Sunday, 15 May 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Y'all suck at knowin' shit.

TAKE A LOOK AT THESE HAND!!!, Sunday, 15 May 2005 03:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Its not an issue of knowing shit. There just isn't one.

Xii (Xii), Sunday, 15 May 2005 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on, you don't *know* there isn't one. Maybe there's one yeeeew haven't heard of. Anyway, I've used Soulseek for years, but it seems to be in a pretty sad state these days-- network is constantly on and off, the global search is improved but still shoddy. And you know, the great thing about torrents is that you can download homemade 7-disc box sets of Lee Perry records ripped from the original 45's (and other things of that nature/size) in like 30 minutes. I basically want an account to *share* things like that, more than I want to actually DL shit.

TAKE A LOOK AT THESE HANDS!!!, Sunday, 15 May 2005 04:50 (twenty-one years ago)

This doesn't exactly answer your questions, but: I have four invites for both sites, and really have no problem giving them away. I don't want anything back, just a reassurance that you'll obey the site's rules and share as much as you can. I've lurked here for a while, and I feel obligated to give back.

That's it. Drop me a line if you're interested.

If it matters to anyone, I'd recommend Oink over IndieTorrents, and I'll post here one more time when my invites are gone.

David Topping (dstopping), Sunday, 15 May 2005 06:25 (twenty-one years ago)

hi, i 'd like an oink one if thats ok.

zappi (joni), Sunday, 15 May 2005 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, David, I've emailed you, and owe you eternally.

TAKE A LOOK AT THESE HANDS!!!, Sunday, 15 May 2005 06:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like an oink invite!

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 15 May 2005 06:43 (twenty-one years ago)

If you still have any Oink invites, I'd love one

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Sunday, 15 May 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

id take either, but oink would be awesome!

Corinne, Sunday, 15 May 2005 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd be forever thankful for an invite to either as well!

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Sunday, 15 May 2005 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

wow would i want an oink invite!

ihope (ihope), Sunday, 15 May 2005 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Ok, I'm all out. Thanks a lot everyone.

Also, to "TAKE A LOOK AT THESE HANDS," I've sent you an invite to both at the e-mail address you ouse for the board. If you also e-mailed me with a different address, you might have gotten two invites - let me know so I can cancel one (or you can pass it on yourself).

David Topping (dstopping), Sunday, 15 May 2005 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh! I sent you an email the same time you were making this post. If TAKE A LOOK cancels one, I hope it works out in my favor. : D

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 15 May 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on, you don't *know* there isn't one.

I'm not sure how many ILM type music obsessives you think there are in the world. I refuse to believe that there's this whole other music site with thousands of users constantly uploading interesting, rare music and none of us have ever heard about it.

The internet is big, but not that big.

Xii (Xii), Sunday, 15 May 2005 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

This internet, yes. But the others.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 15 May 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

If you look hard enough / long enough at dimeadozen you can find great stuff...

but I really don't know what oink/indietorrent offer -- can i get an invite?

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Sunday, 15 May 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I would love an indietorrents invite... I have a couple of spare oink invites if anyone still needs one...

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Sunday, 15 May 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd like an oink invite!

giboyeux (skowly), Sunday, 15 May 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I still have an oink invite left, give me your email and I'll send it to you.

i sure would like an indietorrents and/or oink invite too... i would be forever thankful.

bove, Sunday, 15 May 2005 21:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I have an indietorrents account, how can I tell if I have invites to give out?

kyle (akmonday), Sunday, 15 May 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Go to your account page and scroll down: it should say Invites: 'Given: Allowed:' - something like that.

You don't get invites until you've uploaded 1 GB there, I believe.

David Topping (dstopping), Sunday, 15 May 2005 23:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot Not a torrent site, really, but allows direct downloads of complete SHN/FLAC live concerts at great speeds.

http://www.archive.org/audio/

As I mentioned here:

Internet Archive - Live Music

the Archive has even more ilm-friendly bands than ever such as:

Soft Boys/Robyn Hitchcock
Kimya Dawson
The Dirtbombs
Magnolia Electric Co.
A Silver Mt. Zion
Acid Mothers Temple
Camper Van Beethoven / Cracker

and as mentioned

My Morning Jacket
Mogwai
Mountain Goats
Giant Sand / Howe Gelb
Calexico
...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead
Butthole Surfers
Hella
Xiu Xiu
Explosions in the Sky
Mekons/Sally Timms/Jon Langford/Waco Brothers/Rico Bell
Soul Coughing / Mike Doughty
Fugazi

Ps = invites still desired ([email protected]) - Thanks!

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Sunday, 15 May 2005 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I cannot believe www.dimeadozen.org has only been mentioned once in this thread. What is the matter with you people? I'm seeding Death In June as we speak. Not that I actually like them, but just as an example. Also currently on my drive is a Magazine FM broadcast from Canada, Sandy Denny in Denver 1973, John Cale in Dallas '79, a Talking Heads DVD from 1980 with Adrian Belew, a Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five show from 1978, and three Alistair Galbraith concerts. Sounds like ILX-type stuff to me.

sleeve, Monday, 16 May 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I have four oink invites to pass along as well, so just e-mail me if you're interested. If someone has an indietorrents one for me, I'd appreciate that too!

mr. drew (mr. drew), Monday, 16 May 2005 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
i would enjoy an indietorrents invite.
especially since i just found out how to use the torrent sites.

I would very much appreciate an invite to any of the aforementioned sites. Thanks!!!

Jena (JenaP), Sunday, 10 July 2005 21:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah me too! Anyone got an invite to Oink? Thanks!

onizuka78, Saturday, 16 July 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

me too! if anyone has a spare invite :]

Johann (johann), Sunday, 17 July 2005 04:34 (twenty years ago)

I dont have any oink invites because my ratio is a little bad right now, but might I suggest going to oink's chat (http://oink.me.uk/chat.php) and asking nicely. I've heard this works well.

Also, if you're even a little bit lazy, indietorrents is probably not worth fucking with.

jhoshea (scoopsnoodle), Sunday, 17 July 2005 04:54 (twenty years ago)

this site is filled with cyberbeggars! earn your own indie cred, beeches!

michael burble, Sunday, 17 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone have an invitation for either Oink, IndieTorrents or DimeADozen?

It would be much appreciated!

Filemp3 is quite good.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

xp to carmel

nervous (cochere), Tuesday, 9 August 2005 14:38 (twenty years ago)

poignant. maybe.

anybody use torrentech?

jermainetwo, Thursday, 29 November 2007 04:56 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, it's ok. i've found stmusic to be better (and i'm mostly into electronic stuff)

jergïns, Thursday, 29 November 2007 04:57 (eighteen years ago)

has anyone managed to get into waffles or what.cd yet? i've found stmusic to be pretty lacking and libble just sucks.

Bus Driver Stu, Thursday, 29 November 2007 05:25 (eighteen years ago)

stmusic's aiight for new music. old stuff is basically roulette. if it grows w/o getting busted it has oinkian potential.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 29 November 2007 05:39 (eighteen years ago)

the brief glimpse of waffles i got recently was extremely disappointing, there was nothing there i wanted and i've got an extensive list that's been building up since oink went under. libble is lame, stmusic has a *little* bit. haven't checked out what.cd, it's my last hope!

BATTAGS, Thursday, 29 November 2007 08:38 (eighteen years ago)

nine months pass...

Anyone find that the what.cd 'freeleech' day basically means that the site is overloaded and unusable?

James Mitchell, Sunday, 21 September 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)

Yes. That said - any recommendations for things to freeleech?

Mordy, Sunday, 21 September 2008 17:39 (seventeen years ago)

Nope. It's a bit slower, but not unusable for me. The tracker seems to have little problems as well.
I racked in some nice things today (Alvin Lucier and John Cage albums I couldn't find anywhere before, and some Steve Reich and Morton Feldman stuff I do own, but am too lazy to digitalize).

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 21 September 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

im freeleeching the 46gb logic studio torrent

update prefs (ice crӕm), Sunday, 21 September 2008 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

I find it kind of ironic how most ILXORs stay with the most "rockist" downloading site there is. :)

Soulseek is where all those with an "alternative" music taste stick. If you are looking for mainstream pop, you find more of it in Torrent sites or big Direct Connect networks. :)

There's no way of asking for an invite to any of the oink replacements without sounding lake a lame newbie ripe for ripping the piss out of, so I'm not gonna bother. Are any of them up the level that Oink was yes? What.cd and waffles and the such?

The Wayward Johnny B, Monday, 22 September 2008 11:56 (seventeen years ago)

^^^ also want to know this

zappi, Monday, 22 September 2008 12:07 (seventeen years ago)

Net yet, but they're on their way. I find myself using what more than waffles, also because the latter seems to be the most 'elitist' (eg. it won't show you the top tens if you haven't uploaded, i dunno, 25gb or something). what.cd seems to have more of my taste anyway. They both have contests every once in a while to get as many as possible up there. The number of albums is growing fast because of that.

If you strictly asked your question about the 'community' on those sites: je ne sais pas. I don't participate in the forums, polls or other stuff like that.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 22 September 2008 12:41 (seventeen years ago)

Net=not

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 22 September 2008 12:41 (seventeen years ago)

what and waffles both have more torrents than oink ever did and better quality control and the sites work better particularly what - and theres two of them - kinda stingy w/the invites tho

update prefs (ice crӕm), Monday, 22 September 2008 13:33 (seventeen years ago)

Tell me about the stingy invites. Do I need to know someone IRL who can hook me up, or does begging like a pauper on random websites have any effect?

The Wayward Johnny B, Monday, 22 September 2008 13:39 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, come on, guys need to hook a message board poster up here.

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Monday, 22 September 2008 13:41 (seventeen years ago)

i think the Waffles crowd is younger than the Oink crowd. but then, i'm old and sensitive...

nerve_pylon, Monday, 22 September 2008 13:41 (seventeen years ago)

begging on random websites is prob way to go - thats how i got mine - best is torrent sites where yr already a member in good standing

update prefs (ice crӕm), Monday, 22 September 2008 13:42 (seventeen years ago)

btw i meant stingy abt the invites as in the requirement for members getting invites to give to other people is quite high

on what its like you have to have uploaded more than 25gb have a positive ratio and have posted at least one torrent - ive been on the site since it started and i just got to 25gb - and im currently ruining my ratio by downloading the rest of the logic torrent that i didnt finish during freeleech

update prefs (ice crӕm), Monday, 22 September 2008 13:46 (seventeen years ago)

oh and for all that u only get one invite a month - to get more you have to be increasingly spectacular

update prefs (ice crӕm), Monday, 22 September 2008 13:47 (seventeen years ago)

In the case of torrents, the best way to search is always to search Google for artist + title + "download this torrent".

Geir Hongro, Monday, 22 September 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

contact me if yall need a what invite, my friend says he has more than he knows what to do with.

phantompenguin, Tuesday, 23 September 2008 12:03 (seventeen years ago)

I've sent you an email phantompenguin. Many thanks for this, it's appreciated.

not having access to these has dramatically decreased the downloading I did but increased the actual listening to music that I do

I have another friend who has three spare, contact me.

Incidentally, I don't know how they get all these. I have an account too but I'm not anywhere near their ratio level.
