Guaranteed Dancefloor-fillers/Dancefloor Killers

No, not a crap Northern Soul compliation on Kent, but your favourite songs to play when you DJ or when you're out making a night of it.

fritz, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

1. DANCEFLOOR FILLERS: What actally draws people out of their chairs screaming with delight after one bar? (Surprises are good, we're all familiar with "Groove Is In The Heart", thanks. Actually super- classic hits are ok too. Just anything that works wonders)

2. DANCEFLOOR KILLERS: What did you think would have this effect but actually left you behind the decks red-faced, the mirror ball's refractions cruelly mocking the now empty dancefloor? (Or what has a dj played as if in a spiteful calculated move to paralyze you whilst getting your freak on)?

fritz, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I dj'd for about a year, but it was in a biker-bar type joint with no dance floor. The owner just wanted rock and roll playing all the time. The only instruction they ever gave me was "no dance music". I spun on a New Year's Eve a few years back, and the place was packed. I forget what the segue was, but at some point I played Ike and Tina's "Baby, Let's Get it On" (off her "Acid Queen" album"), and the place went nuts, people dancing everywhere. Someone yelled out to me "I haven't seen a scene like this since the 70's", which I asumed was a compliment. It was a fun night.

The song that got me dancing around the dj booth the most was usually T. Rex's "Solid Baby", but I don't think it has that effect on most people.

And I own one Northern Soul comp, it's on Kent, and it's really good.

Sean, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I've got a couple of really good Kent comps too but some are ultra- dodgy. I will try out that Tina song, her version of "Honkytonk Woman" from the same era has worked for me in the past.

fritz, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Dancefloor filler: The theme from Sanford & Son. You laugh, but watch everyone come a-runnin' when it starts.

Killer: I've never seen a floor empty as fast as when the DJ played Billy Idol's "Mony Mony". I think any just out-of-date dance craze is sure to send the crowd for another drink.

Dave225, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Funny, I was thinking of Ike and Tina, too, Sean. Whether I DJ at a rock club or a gay bar, "Nutbush City Limits" always gets them going. And Swamp Dogg's "Total Destruction to Your Mind" keeps them there.

As for the more obvious choices, well, at the gay bar, they always go wild for "Pump Up the Jam". And last year's favorites were of the very obvious sort: "One More Time", "Get Ur Freak On", "Country Grammar", "Family Affair". At the rock club, it's usually "I Wanna Be Sedated" or "Blockbuster". I rarely played new records, they didn't want to know.

I think I mentioned this on another thread, but I used to love to piss off the boring old punk rockers at the club in NY I DJed at by playing Sparks, Klaus Nomi and Gary Numan. Maximum fruitiness! I wish I had some Pavlov's Dog.

I was surprised when the Pointer Sisters "Yes We Can Can" cleared the dance floor at the gay club. I guess it took too long to get going.

Arthur, Friday, 18 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I DJed a friend's wedding and Quad City DJs "Ride The Train [Ride the Bass Mix]" had everybody going nuts. It was in New Orleans so the Southern vibe was there.

Public Enemy. The only one to literally RUN to the dancefloor was my friend, the rest of us went to sit down. She was so proud she knew all the words to the song.

helenfordsdale, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

in my limited experience i'd say filler : fatboy slim - song for lindy killer - aphex twin - windowlicker [doh]

naz, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I used to make up tapes to play at people's parties. At one party - my own birthday as it turned out, but also a singles night for my local bar - there was one side of classic 60s Motown and stuff which got everyone dancing. The second side was for me to groove on on my own, and hence started off with "Soon" by MBV and "Freak scene" by Dinosaur Jnr and got noisier from there on. Never seen a room clear so fast in all my life - except for the few completely pissed friends of mine who stood in the centre of the room swinging around like lunatics. It made my night!

Rob M, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Sometimes, depending on where you are, a remix can be utter death. I remember clearing the dancefloor at a party in college with a remix of Mary J. Blige's "Real Love", only to have it fill back up when I put the radio version on next.

One song which is guaranteed to get people dancing wherever I go is Front 242's "Headhunter". I've never played that song and not had people dance. Likewise, "Give It Up" by The Goodmen, "James Brown Is Dead" by New York Style, "Now Is Tomorrow" by Definition Of Sound and "Gin And Juice" by Snoop Dogg always have made people boogie for me. My proudest moment, though, was getting everyone in my high school to dance to "The Bog" by Bigod 20. We played that song so much, people started requesting it.

Dan Perry, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

funny, i'd say aphex twin - windowlicker = filler. killer - paula abdul tunes.

ambrose, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Tommy James "Mony Mony" is filler. Daft Punk's first album is killer.

Sterling Clover, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Underworld - Dark & Long (Dark Train Mix)

lately:

Funk D'Void - Diabla works the floor....last time I was in a club and Parks & Wilson dropped that the place went mad.

Dirty - Dirty is also doing it lately.

patrick, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Whoever mentioned Billy Idol's "Mony Mony" and a dancefloor just brought back to me the memory of dances at my Catholic middle school (I would have been, what, around eleven years old) - the chaperones had to make the dj stop playing that one 'cause they discovered all the kids were yelling "Hey motherfucker you're gonna get fucked" after every line.

daria gray, Saturday, 19 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

it was "hey motherfucker get laid get fucked" in my neighbourhood.

ginnjuice, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Killer: Anything that DJs play from Kylie's new album. Green Velvet's "La La Land". Mid-nineties Chicago house of any description. Mary Mary's "Shackles". Fragma's "Toca's Miracle". Hatiras vs J Majick - "Spaced Invader". (all stuff that revealed its magic to me on the dancefloor through the sheer level of mania it generated). I'll have to think about filler.

Tim, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

This is dead confusing. Filler is usually a bad thing but dancefloor filler suggests a good thing and killer is usually a good thing but dancefloor killer suggests bad. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH.

Good songs-Felix Da Housecat-Harlot (Justin Robertson Remix). X-Press 2 Smoke Machine. Groove Armada-Superstylin. Agent Sumo-24 Hours.

Bad songs-PPK, whatever the fuck it's called. Royksopp-Poor Leno, the crappy remix does nothing for me.

Ronan, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

i did myself 5 tapes recently for a birthday and there was a good mix of people and they were never meant for dancing. However, 'Sympathy for the devil was at the end of one of the tapes and it came on pretty late on and a few people got giddy

It was followed by thee Hypotics and people stopped being giddy

Sonicred, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I can't dance to rock music. at all. I'm quite competent at dancing to anything over a certain bpm but rock music no no. Am I alone in this? I can't imagine ever being excited enough by a rock song to get up and dance either, even though I don't like to admit it.

Ronan, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

A lot of rock songs have the right tempo, Ronan. "Defunkt Hunk" by Die Hausfrauen come to mind (chiz). Or what about ESG? That's rock music but it's made for dancing.

Tracer Hand, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Most rock and roll has never inspired me to dance much either. Interestingly, I found a lot of post-punk/new wave more inspiring in this regarded. I remember dancing a lot to Siouxsie and the Banshees (who I mostly danced to by doing a sort of continuous jump and turn around in one spot), XTC, Talking Heads, even some Joy Division. Punk, too, made me want to dance, but prudence generally made me sit it out. What little slam-dancing I did was pretty enjoyable. (This was after the real heyday, in, say, the mid to late 80's.)

DeRayMi, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

When I used to take this music to parties during my college days, I usually ended up being the only person dancing. I don't remember what people did dance to. Maybe I just wasn't around dancers at those parties.

phil-two, Sunday, 26 January 2003 07:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

Just got home from DJing at the gay bar tonight. They all loved "That's the Joint" and "Double Dutch Bus". Of the new stuff I played, "At Night" by Shakedown seemed to go over really well. Kylie's "Love at First Sight", too. Nobody cared about "Danger! High Voltage!" at all, I was disappointed. When I played "Murder on the Dancefloor" a girl came up to me and said "Thank you! I never hear that anywhere but Australia!"

killers...too many to mention..."hot in here" for me anyway

dj toe-foo, Sunday, 26 January 2003 12:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah I always feel like a tool when I try and dance to rock, also the lyrics just get in the way.

Scram is a good choice!

Ronan (Ronan), Sunday, 26 January 2003 14:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

i like dancing to rock as much as dance these days...perhaps rock/indie/punk are more forgiving - you can just throw yourself about and you dont have to conform to the rhythm as much, tho thats obviously also fun

fillers: 'Danger High Voltage', Le Tigre 'Hot Topic', B52s 'Love Shack', House Of Pain 'Jump Around', Blackstreet 'No Diggity', Grandmaster Flash 'The Message', Freelance Hellraiser 'A Stroke Of genieus', Missy Elliott 'Get Ur Freak On', the whole of '2 Many DJs'

no way.

michael wells (michael w.), Sunday, 26 January 2003 19:06 (twenty-one years ago) link

The whole problem with the filler/killer thing is that it's all about the audience, not the song. The Grease megamix will go down very well with your average wedding disco, while a skinny deadserious techno DJ in an abandoned warehouse will clear the floor with it.

Anyway, the obligatory floorfiller: Tomcraft "Loneliness"

Siegbran (eofor), Sunday, 26 January 2003 22:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

FILLER: "My Name is Prince"
KILLER: Surprisingly, "Fool's Gold" by the Stone Roses cleared the floor at the last soirez of this kind I was at (back in the bronze age).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 26 January 2003 22:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

In college, if I really wanted to stop DJing and clear out the floor so I could take a break to dance, I'd put on either "Fool's Gold" or "Slip Inside This House". Worked like a dream every time.

FILLER: "Tainted Love." Either the Soft Cell or original Gloria Jones version. The original will score you cred points as excited clubgoers rush the DJ stand to ask who's singing that Soft Cell song.

KILLER: Silver Jews' "Old New York."

Luckily I've mostly DJ'd on the radio and in between bands - I can't handle the stress of picking dancefloor fillers all night!

Very few people at Harvard knew who The Prodigy were back in the early 90s, let alone Leftfield. People were still stuck on Erasure and Duran Duran (specifically "Stop!" and "Rio", two songs I have come to loathe like you wouldn't believe due to forced exposure).

Yep - unlike Dancing in the Street, You Can't Hurry Love, Reach out I'll Be There, Twist and Shout, and others, it's not a dancefloor filler but a dancefloor killer for the old folks at a wedding.

So true!

From my own experience, and in the wrong context some of these would probably be killers.

Fillers:
Hall & Oates - Out of Touch
Mr Flagio - Take a Chance
Debbie Jacobs - Don't You Want my Love
Patrick Cowley - Menergy
Colonal Abrams - Trapped
Davina - Don't You Want It
Cajmere Feat. Dajae - Brighter Days (Underground Goodies Mix)

Killers:
Peekay - Up In The Air feat Phily. I once got the best reaction of the night playing this track, and was convinced I'd discovered the most underrated garage banger of all time. Next time I played it I completely misjudged the mood of the after party I was playing at, completely cleared the room and decided it was the worst track of all time.

'Work' is such a tricky one. I've seen it fill and kill. has to be dropped at exactly the right time

TARANTINO! (dog latin), Thursday, 26 May 2016 06:13 (seven years ago) link

One Dance and Work I've mostly hear them played for warming up. They're floor killers if played even in remix form when people are already in the floor... They could work on a more sexy, mellow kind of dancefloor but good luck finding one.

The best songs have enormous variations in tempo, beat and dynamics. Which makes, for instance, "Supper's Ready" useless for dancing.

I just lolled at this eight years after the fact.

seven years pass...

So I usually host parties at my house and since many people from different backgrounds and age gaps turn up every now and then I try to keep it mixed and take request to place in line. I guess my selections make 70% of the playlist and the others have been added as requested. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't but here's a collection of highlights of the last 5+ reunions.

These are not all necessarily dancefloor fillers - I wasn't sure where to post - they mostly work for cocktail parties I guess but there's drinking and dancing going on - I'll keep updating as more parties ensue.

three months pass...

thanks so much for sharing this Moka. I've been listening to Stop Bajon almost daily since July, it's my new favourite! Now getting to grips with the rest of the playlist.

I don't know where in the world you are but a lot of the Italian / Spanish-language music was totally new to me. Pino D'Angio also seems like he will be getting some heavy rotation.
