Why Bon Scott was totally gay, and that's pretty ironic

first: SO many homoerotic lyrics...
"My lady's got balls", "For a fee I'm happy to be your backdoor man" "He's got bigballs" "The French eat frog, And I eat you" or whatever, youknowhatimsayin!

second: isn't "AC/DC" aussie slang for bisexual?

third: it is part of their written history that their first shows were at a gay club. plus: there is some early TV footage of Bon fronting AC/DC in drag, with some strange Hidie wig, I swear to god.

fourth: the whole school-boy thing, and Angus always droppin' trou' during the drum-solo? C'mon!!!!!

& finally: in the great rock concert film "Let There Be Rock" (Paris, 1980) there is a section where the Young brothers are basically saying, "Well, Bon's a little different". Then there's a clip of Bon strolling the streets in a fancy scarf, and the omniscent narrator voice asks flat out, "Do you like men?"

You be the judge.

Now, Why it's ironic? (see: Rob Halford)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 13:16 (nineteen years ago) link

Saying it's "ironic" suggests that there's something inherently hetero about rock & roll, and I'd like to disabuse people of that notion toot sweet.

Bon Scott was not gay. Nor was/is anyone else in AC/DC. Not that there's anything wrong with being gay, but rather that is just wasn't the case. The took the name from the back of a sewing machine. Case closed. Move on, nothing to see here.

i·ro·ny    n. pl. i·ro·nies
1 a.The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning. b. An expression or utterance marked by a deliberate contrast between apparent and intended meaning. c. A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect.
2. a. Incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs: “Hyde noted the irony of Ireland's copying the nation she most hated” (Richard Kain). b. An occurrence, result, or circumstance notable for such incongruity.

Alright, I was just going from the second defintion in The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition - where a circumstance exists which is largely unexpected. And who was it unexpected by? Not by you ILM smart-asses, but by a huge portion of AC/DC's audience during their prime... ever see 'Heavy Metal Parking Lot'? That WAS the U.S. metal audience at it's peak, and those mossbacks wore their ignorance like a badge of honor. Narrowmindedness was a sport for them. So, yeh, it's a bit ironic that one of their heroes *was probably gay*. Look, if Rob Halford, George Micheal, or Elton John died at that age we may never have know for sure. But, we'd have clues...

Which one, the one atop yer head?
Even if Bon Scott was a flaming fairy with antennae and butterfly wings who loved nothing more than to give a man's meat donut the ivory rod of decimation...what of it?
Theres nothing "ironic" or "odd" about this. Isn't the current statistic "10% of Men and 4% of Women" are totally about the love that dare not speak its name? Eh?
If this statistic is accurate, you could line up 100 musicians of any genre and 10%/4% of them will be tooling for a new hole.
But we are talking about musicians here. And that means, in the end, the only hole that matters is the one in the middle of the CD.
So there.

-- miccio

It's time to scotch this one once and for all. If only you were right, miccio, cos I really like your interpretation - but he's a hired killer, right through every verse and chorus. In Australia in the 70's a backdoor man is someone who does something illegal for you. It doesn't have the same implication then as it had in the 80's to the present when used by, say, Jim Foetus, when he offered to play the same role in Wiseblood's 'Prime Gonzola' to some lucky lady.

theee music mole, Saturday, 26 March 2005 08:40 (nineteen years ago) link

To take another example, when Australian tape-edit genius Pauline Pantsdown lampoons our famously redneck politian Pauline Hanson, he has her say 'I'm a backdoor man for the Ku Klux Klan'. This means she's doing their dirty work - not that she is pleasuring them from behind with a strap-on. Now there's a fine mental image...

Y'know, sometimes -- as Frued might say -- a backdoor is just a backdoor. Its a door, in your house...but in the back of the house.
Entering it is less conspicious that entering through the front.
Entering someones house through their personal bunghole, is, however, far too easy to notice.

Holy crow, it it out already

The AC/DC fab will want to see the rock video opera ala Eighties made for "Fly On the Wall."

First, you gotta understand that this was not a particularly well-respected AC/DC record. Second, the put-together on "Family Jewels" is a great way to get back into the best of it. Third, it's totally 80's and suitably humorous. "Sink the Pink" is a high point. Sadly, this is not gay although it does portray a wispy-looking white boy being overpowered by a moxy woman in a game of 9 Ball. She pulls up short and illogically surrenders to him while the band sprays it in the background. Really, "Fly On the Wall" was a difficult, collapsed AC/DC offering and the "Family Jewels" thing refocuses on it. "Nervous Shakedown" from "Flick" is also tremendous, as it always was.

Alot of the stuff said on here has been incredibly disrespectful to Bon - one of the most charismatic, original, hard-rocking frontmen in rock history! His larynx-shredding vocals and onstage persona completely outshaddow any of these RUMOURS - and seriously - why is it worth even talking about? Bon was a great person. and thats that.

about this "backdoor" stuff - it can apply about women too - see lyrics for LedZeppelin's whole lotta love "i wanna be your backdoor man", Iron Maidens bring your daughter to the slaughter "unchain your backdoor invite me around" etc etc

this is total bull shit. the reason bon performed in drag on tv ONCE was because it was AC/DC's first gig on TV and they needed attention. Secondly, read the biography by clinton walker and see all the shit bon does and you'l realise he just doesn't give a flying fuck wat people think, and if he was gay he would've said something. thirdly the reason he was sent to jail when he was sixteen was because he knocked out a guy who asked his GIRLFRIEND for a root. not exactly something you'd expect a gay guy to be sent to jail for is it
