i never understood what was supposed to be clever about macca. (or moz or mozzer or whatever people call morrisey. is there something funny about those in england? in america they just sound stupid.)

Agreed. It sounds even worse coming from American fans/radio d.j.'s who think they're being really "in the know" by using the terms. Ugh.

David Thomas a.k.a. "Krokus Behemoth"

Curious George Finds the Ether Bottle (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 20 March 2005 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Back in the day, Smash Hits had many hilarious though very Anglophile nicknames for pop stars, from "Sir" William of Idol to Lord Lucan for Freddie Mercury (the late Queen singer resembled a royal who was suspected of murdering his wife).

Macca, Mozzer and Gaz for Gary etc are common English slang are they not? Never sounded any more stupid to me than US slang would to a Brit. That said, Madonna's mid-Atlantic accent is tres annoying.

Lee Michaels drummer was called Frosty. The fact that I remember this indicates deep-seated pathology or a need to get out more.
