Thunderbirds are now! - any thoughts?

Just saw them in the opening slot for the Hold Steady on thursday. Spastic fun, tastes like enon, !!!, a little Mclusky (RIP). Hilarious stage show that featured bass player doing the robot bass player dance, and ritalin-deprived keyboard/vocalist presenting perhaps the most stylized over-use of a tamborine ever. Just released a record on French Kiss, and I think I like it...any takers?

i've only heard one of their earliest tunes: pink motorcycle helmet. f'ing great though. i'd like to hear their new one...

I think it might have just come out this week or something. Good GOD, man!

They also win the award for most amusing attempt to not sleep in their van award. Their Merch table had a sign on it reading "We need somewhere to sleep!" Underneath, in small letters, it said "(we promise not to pee on you.)"

They're pretty fun. Haven't heard the new one. I reviewed their previous one for Pitchfork [ducks]

I love the first album, haven't heard the second, but it's apparently pretty different (eh, maybe).

great live band.. kinda pere ubu-ish but with waaay more pizazz. (yes, i just wrote pizazz). lead singer (i think his name is ryan allen) has always had pretty crazy energy onstage. (was in the fabulous Red Shirt Brigade years back)

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Sunday, 13 March 2005 07:35 (nineteen years ago) link

i wanted to shoot the overenthusiastic keyboard player with his hot hot heat hair. my friends thought it was like early q and not u but i just didn't think it was very good.

anyone else tempted to shout 'THUNDERBIRDS ARE NOW!' when talking about this band just to express that wonerful use of exclamation point?

eight months pass...
Their second album came out this week in Britain (maybe elsewhere in Europe too, not sure). I reviewed it for the mag I write for -

Thunderbirds Are Now! – Justamustache (French Kiss)

Hey kids, how’s your dancing? You eschew such irrelevancies as ‘moves’ and just flail cos it feels right, right? Good, me too. And I’ve a feeling Thunderbirds Are Now! would approve, because this is exactly the kind of record that demands borderline-uncoordinated indie-disco mentalism. Proving that Detroit has more to offer than the cronies of Eminem and The White Stripes, TAN! are yet another killer post-punk outfit whose sheer tight-as-fuck energy is giving me palpitations. Six months ago I thought The Departure had sapped my appetite for post-punk revivalists - they’re enough to make you question your faith in fun – but then you see past the fashionistas in it for a quick buck and remember that there are legions of nerdy kids with guitars and ancient synths that love to make their friends go nuts at every opportunity. It’s a beautiful thing and, like The Blood Brothers spliced with Hot Hot Heat and Jolt cola, there’s a geeky, nervous aggression here that is really rather exciting.

From the moment TAN! ape fellow exclamation mark fans The Go! Team by having a female cheerleader shout the band name in the first few seconds, I’m there for the taking. Openers ‘Better safe than safari’ and ‘Eat this city’ are the first of many wiry juggernauts of jackhammer drums, synth bleeps and stabs and tunefully yelped vocals and, instead of concocting some godawful obnoxious mess, they manage to lock us into an insanely tight and infectious sonic jigsaw. Like the legendary Wire, when you’ve had enough of one hook, they chuck you another to chew on. ‘198090’ will have you spazzing out in 6 different ways within three-and-a-half minutes. That’s confidence.

For the first half of the album it’s pedal to the metal all the way, but later on they ease up slightly and start to let things open up a bit, giving us all a chance to catch our breath. ‘To: skulls’ and its sister ‘From: skulls’ are heavily reminiscent of the last Pretty Girls Make Graves album with their minor key drama and shouted backing vocals. Later, ‘Bodies adjust’ is icy electro and practically a ballad, ending with a bizarre percussion face-off between glitchy beats and, um, bongos. Just when you’re missing throwing yourself about though, they throw you the gleeful ‘This world is made of paper’, the most straightforward pop song on the album and a whole heap of fun.

With energy like this coming out of my stereo I can only imagine what the live show is like but I swear, if they ever grace Belfast with their presence I’m there - the dashing chap in the glasses fitting down the front. FAB, Virgil.

The album title must go.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 20:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Bit silly isn't it? Good record though, so I'll let them away with it.

Cracks (Crackity), Wednesday, 7 December 2005 20:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Eh. Haven't seen 'em in a while, so maybe they're better now. Got blown off the stage by Les Savvy Favs, were dicks at the Elbow Room, their albums never really excited me (they're kinda like a less manic Need New Body) and I kinda thought they sounded like a million other bands to the extent that I'd rather just listen to those other bands.

are you on crack? NNB & TAN! sound nothing alike.

i've seen them twice this year, and they have been the best band i have seen besides the hold steady. just very fun.

the title does suck though.

I got the vinyl, it came with a fake mustache.

pinder (pinder), Thursday, 8 December 2005 01:19 (eighteen years ago) link

Wasn't takened with them when I saw them opening for someone last year in Detroit. Seemed a bit forced, but I did apreciate the effort. The songs weren't that memerable.

peepee (peepee), Thursday, 8 December 2005 02:44 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah I could kind of do without everybody on French Kick really, but Thunderbirds seem to have a kind of emo bend to the new wavey Six Fingers kind of thing that makes them all the shittier.

fljfj, Thursday, 8 December 2005 06:45 (eighteen years ago) link

Yikes, dude! Justamustache has got to be one of my favorite repositiories of simply sweet, sweet, skronky, catchy as hell, post-punky, whatever guitar hooks. Actually, I think on the pure hookiness angle Ryan Allen edges out Seth Jabour (who he obviously cops from, but I mean the whole band's existence takes cues from the Fav. Which is fine!)

Listening to the record would help with appreciation of the live show, which is a sweaty, urgent, fantastic mess,

Thanks Thunderbirds are Now! street team member!

ICe are?1, Thursday, 8 December 2005 10:07 (eighteen years ago) link

I saw them a week ago, they are a huge pile of fun albeit one-dimensional to the max

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:55 (eighteen years ago) link

I'm not a street teamer btw, I write for a monthly mag in Northern Ireland. I just wanted to see what ILMers thought of the album and also to put my review up to see if I got any comments on the writing.

Cracks (Crackity), Thursday, 8 December 2005 20:46 (eighteen years ago) link

I like to see them jump around, and their songs are catchy, but after a while I grow weary of them.

subgenius (subgenius), Thursday, 8 December 2005 22:20 (eighteen years ago) link

TOTALLY FUN LIVE. They almost stole the 2nd day of Intonation, despite playing first at like 1:00. They would have gotten away with it if not for Les Savy Fav.
