I've been trying to figure the lyrics to this song and recently recieved a spirited (if not kooky) response. Please chip in if you have the time.

MP3 at: http://www.derekerdman.com/ilovemilkshakes/february2005/s/mmm.mp3

Response #1:

America's insane
Oh in the heart of Italy
The people there are probably
The least religious in the world
Oh I'm Sophia*
When the rent's paid**
Oh I don't know about all that
What's America mean to you?
America means everything to me.

*Sophia here refers to a central character from Christian
mythology (hence the reference to Italy, commonly understood
to be the bastion of Catholic faith) who falls from grace,
makes several moral errors, and eventually becomes a
prostitute. She later repents and is saved. For students of
Paganism and early Christian mythology, Sophia is the figure
that represents the double-sided nature of every human soul
—open to both incarnation and redemption. In this case, the
parallelism of Sophia and the rent payer (as temporarily
redeemed prostitute), like the earlier parallelism of Italy
and America, is used to illustrate the irony of our own
(American) faith (in cash).

** Rent payment as the motivating event for the composition of
this song is given further credence by the title’s reference
to the second of the month, an obvious day to pay rent.

Thanks a heap.

its sounds more like
"when Sophia
Loren said"

ie the actress

oh and shes Italian.
whats the gaggles of free stuff then?

yeah, I'm for "when Sophia Loren said," or "and Sophia Loren said," so she's objecting to this accusation of impiety, which the singer makes to compensate for his ambivalence toward his own national identity. But what we're probably missing is a subtext. What Sophia Loren movie is being referenced here?

Damn, that sounds a lot like (who else?) early Scritti Politti.

I always thought the first line was "Merv Griffin says."

Like he's interviewing Sophia Loren (and whoever wrote it witnessed it on TV at 9:30 on May2)?

Wow, what an excellent call.

First line is definitely "Merv Griffin said". So this is a great example of the interpretative tail wagging the dog (not that there's anything wrong with it). The song looks like a case of a musical/rhythmic experimentation--speeding up Scritti Politti--needing a ready-made verbal filler. So take it from a talk show...

Great song, by the way.

three weeks pass...
Wow, if you write email to Mike Watt, he actually writes back!

derek,

I wrote the lyrics and this is what they actually are:

merv griffin said
"that in the heart of italy
the people there are probably
the least religious in the world"
then sophia loren said
"I don't know about that"
"what does america mean to you?"
"america means everything to me"

I hope this helps. it's actually what I heard on that date when
watching the merv griffin show. I can't believe I was watching that but even
more amazed at the stupid shit coming out of merv's mouth.

on bass, watt
