the 70s poll - rules, and nominations (¡FINAL VOTING ABOUT TO CLOSE - LAST CHANCE TO "MAKE THAT DIFFERENCE"!)

And about bloody time too... here's the ilm 70s poll.

Let's start with the rules, and I'll post the nominations after this.

You are allowed to make 70 choices altogether. Some people have said that that isn't enough, but others were unhappy at the prospect of having to choose this many. Personally, that will leave me with a tracks list that is far too long and has to have many of my favourites chopped out of it, but there's some flexibility as to how many votes you cast on either list.

So, you make one list of tracks and one of albums as normal, but they don't have to be of a certain length. If you really wish, one of them can contain 70 items and the other none. They're scored as below - deliberately much higher for the things people select as the favourites, partly again because of some of the complaints at having to compile a long list.

They're still separate lists, though. Songs are not scored in with albums. The top choice of both lists scores 70 points. The scoring does favour those who vote 35/35, but its up to you.

Please send your votes in an e-mail (rather than an attachment) to ilx70s@yahoo.co.uk

I'll bump this list occasionally, to remind people it is there.

When I've counted your votes, I'll send you an e-mail to let you know. Give me a few days, and if you haven't had one, send me a message saying "OYHOBARTWHATTHEFUCKAREYOUARSEINGAROUNDAT??"

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:34 (nineteen years ago) link

fuck this 'nomination' shit, at least for the singles one. a 70's poll with only 4 Led Zep songs has no credibility.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Al cool yr shorts, vote for four Zeppelin tracks and move on with yr life! Damn!

(By the way I've been craving the veggie burger at that place we went to, what was it called?)

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:16 (nineteen years ago) link

80 of the top 100 should clearly be by Led Zeppelin. The other 20 should be by Slade. This poll is a fucking joke.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:20 (nineteen years ago) link

And "Ramble On" is from 1969?! Although I might vote for it anyway..

billstevejim, Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Surely the top 80 should be Dr.Buzzard and his mates and the rest would be Manhattan Transfer.

KeithW (kmw), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:36 (nineteen years ago) link

And "Ramble On" is from 1969?! Although I might vote for it anyway..

Oh...arse..

Well, I'll score it and include it in the list, but not actually give it a placing... unless the person that nominated it wants to come in NOW and change it.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Personally, I'm just disappointed that there's no Saint Etienne...

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:53 (nineteen years ago) link

By the way, does that explanation of the rules make any sense at ALL? It seemed fine when I wrote it, now I'm reading it back and thinking "errr......"

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:56 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, I'll score it and include it in the list, but not actually give it a placing... unless the person that nominated it wants to come in NOW and change it.

I'm taking that as a suggestion not to vote for "Ramble On."

Yes, but a 70s poll with only THREE Led Zeppelin songs...

Vote for it if you want, just remember it is an ABERRATION and SHOULD NOT BE THERE.

So, can we vote for *less* than seventy items, if we want to?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 10:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Yes you can.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 10:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Maybe I'm just a bit dense this morning, but I still don't understand how the scoring is going to work. We are supposed to vote separately for albums and tracks, yes? So do the #1 album and the #1 track both get 70 points? Or does one get 70 and the other 69? If so, which one gets which?

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 10:42 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, wait, nevermind - I just reread it, and it's making sense now.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 10:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think I explained it that well, and even though it makes sense to you, it wouldn't hurt to do it again.

There are two separate lists. The #1 in both gets 70 points.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 10:49 (nineteen years ago) link

I see - the confusion happened because I thought that the list of points given at the end of your original post upthread was the overall list for all 70 votes - however, now I see that the same allocation of points will be used for both the albums ballot and the tracks ballot.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 11:04 (nineteen years ago) link

i've managed to pick 70 tracks relatively easily tho ranking them is a bitch. prob won't bother with albums as i don't actually own any from the 70s (apart from The Man Machine)

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 11:33 (nineteen years ago) link

It's all you need.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 11:44 (nineteen years ago) link

What about blurbs, do you want 'em?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 12:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah yes, i knew there was something I missed. Yes, blurbs are good, if you want to write them... If you've already sent your list and want to re-send your blurbs, that's good too.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 12:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I think Dr. Bill arranged the blurb thing pretty well with his 2004 poll: we marked the tracks/albums we'd be willing to write a blurb for with a star, and if they showed up on the list he asked for us to write the blurbs before the list was posted. No unnecessary writing then.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 12:56 (nineteen years ago) link

(Of course this'll mean a bit more work for you.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 12:57 (nineteen years ago) link

"Ramble On" is from 1969 - otherwise it'd be pretty high up in my poll. I've finished doing the 35 albums and 35 tracks, ranking them is indeed a bitch.

Dadrockismus (Dada), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 13:42 (nineteen years ago) link

a note to anyone reading this far.

Please use the second list of songs (complete with ZZ Top entry and minus erroneous Led Zep song) rather than the first.

Hmmm...do we need a new thread with the proper list on it?

Tuomas - your suggestion sounds fine, we'll do it that way.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 13:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Mainly to bump this again:

I'm surprised at several tracks that didn't make it onto the nominations list. Most glaringly, T.V. Eye, New Rose, Rock With You, Superfly, Rebel Rebel, and a couple others that are escaping my mind at this moment. The albums list seems much more "complete". The huge number of Donna Summer singles and Bowie/Eno albums is crazy, too. Just think how many Prince and Smiths tracks are going to be nominated in the 80's poll.

Oh, King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown is also a surprise omission on the tracks list too.

I was hoping someone would nominate "Loving You" by Minnie Ripperton, but since I nominated one of her other songs instead, I can't complain either.

Perhaps we should have an alternative "songs you forgot to nominate, or would have nominated but due to the crazy rules made up by some stupid fuxxor you didn't get chance" poll.

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 18 February 2005 13:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I think its too late for that now, as people have voted for it. Apparently, Toots and the Maytals is 1969 too..but again, I found this out after people had starting casting their votes - there will just have to be 1969 songs in the poll.

In retrospect, I wish I'd put at least one of the Big Star albums in my final ballot, but the three of them cancelled each other out. I couldn't bring myself to pick between them, but any one of them would have been in my top 10. Major fuckup.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Thursday, 3 March 2005 21:18 (nineteen years ago) link

i think it took me a lot longer than it should have, like, three hours. it was fun, though, and I went back and listened to a lot of albums I hadn't in a while... i realized today that i left out Blood on the Tracks and that Maggot Brain should have been about, ohhhhhh, TWENTY spots higher than I placed it. What the hell was I thinking?

poortheatre (poortheatre), Friday, 4 March 2005 01:39 (nineteen years ago) link

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Friday, 4 March 2005 01:40 (nineteen years ago) link

Hurray! That's much better everyone. At least we won't have a #1 album with three points now.

Poortheatre, if you sent your vote in within the last couple of days there's time to change it, if you want to. I won't have counted anything since monday.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Friday, 4 March 2005 10:18 (nineteen years ago) link

I'll get mine in later today. The ordering of my top four tracks is a near toss-up right now and I'll need to sleep on it.

Also, how many tracks/albums are people sending in? I'm sending in 45/30. My tracks shortlist was a lot bigger than my albums shortlist. I know the mathematics of the situation but when it came right down to it I cared more deeply about the items on my tracks list than those on my albums list.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 4 March 2005 10:54 (nineteen years ago) link

Hang on, I can't do 45/30, that's 75 picks, not 70. Oh damn ...

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 4 March 2005 10:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I did 45 tracks and 25 albums.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 4 March 2005 10:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, that's probably what I'll do, or maybe a weird 43/27 sort of thing, depending on what I absolutely positively can't see myself leaving out.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 4 March 2005 11:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Also, how many tracks/albums are people sending in? I'm sending in 45/30. My tracks shortlist was a lot bigger than my albums shortlist. I know the mathematics of the situation but when it came right down to it I cared more deeply about the items on my tracks list than those on my albums list.

I was the same. Ended up split 50/20 tracks/albums. It also surprised me what I ended up putting in the top 10, and what I didn't.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Friday, 4 March 2005 11:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I did 53 tracks and 17 albums.

I'll actually count anything that arrives before I total this up - which is likely to be on sunday. So you have tomorrow to vote too.

Also, anyone who wants to do blurbs, that'd be good. I'll be asking you in the next couple of days.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Friday, 4 March 2005 12:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, I guess I'm willing to blurb any of my favourites. I did 40-30 I think, 40 tracks. I put favourites in order in both classes, then started counting, then started comparing, and ended up deciding that that represented how much I loved the items there reasonably accurately.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 4 March 2005 19:23 (nineteen years ago) link

I did 30 albums/40 tracks as well - mainly just because I was familiar with a much higher percentage of the tracks than of the full albums.

There were some strange track nominations ... when going through the list, I had several reactions of the "WTF? We nominated these Donna Summer tracks??" sort. It's not like it made much of a difference, though -- I found no shortage of flawless tracks to choose from.

No Spinners?! I'm almost positive some Spinners songs were on the list, at some point anyway. Did we lose them or did they all get switched to other songs? I sort of remember: Games People PLay, Then Came You and I'll Be Around. A 70s song list without anything by the Spinners feels so incomplete to me.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 5 March 2005 10:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh yeah - no Spinners! I would certainly have voted for 'It's A Shame' and maybe 'I'll Be Around'. Hmmm...

I think I wound up doing 36 albums and 34 tracks, but then the next day I listened to the first B-52's album and I totally regrtted not including "Rock Lobster," my #35 single. :(

Where is 'Drums and Wires'???
One of the best albums of the era, miles better than 'White Music'...
I really don't understand that.

zeus, Saturday, 5 March 2005 18:47 (nineteen years ago) link

Yea, the Drums n' Wires omissions in really bad. Same with Catch a Fire.

poortheatre (poortheatre), Saturday, 5 March 2005 18:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Well then you should've fucking nominated them, shouldn't you have?

dronez are not ours to eat, dronez are not ours to wear (smile), Sunday, 6 March 2005 13:58 (nineteen years ago) link

The December ILX outage really damaged this poll. Nobody's fault, but there it is. Okay, I'll say it: maybe in a year or so, we should try it all over again and see if anything changes?

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 6 March 2005 17:04 (nineteen years ago) link

(People could have double-checked to make sure their nominations were in place.)

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 6 March 2005 17:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, definitely. And shit on anybody who complains about omissions but didn't make any nominations.

Curious George Rides a Republican (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 6 March 2005 17:46 (nineteen years ago) link

So this is closed now, right?

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Thursday, 10 March 2005 14:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I was told through email correspondence with poll runner h.p. that results were tentatively scheduled to begin TODAY

jared, Friday, 15 April 2005 18:22 (nineteen years ago) link

I got a similar message from him, but Friday isn't a good day to start a poll countdown ... better to hold off until Monday.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 15 April 2005 18:39 (nineteen years ago) link

But but but...what am I supposed to do this weekend, then?

Keith C (kcraw916), Friday, 15 April 2005 18:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm pissed — I wanted to vote but it took forever to do so, so I gave up. Lame.
