Slept on my living room floor a couple of months ago. They are very nice people and their live show is extremely good -- loud and mesmeric, you know. It's nice to see psych interpreted in this way. There aren't a lot of bands doing something so specific.

that's a fair way to put it. it is specific, and well done at that.

i saw one of the very last Jerk With A Bomb shows, before they morphed into Black Mountain. it was good stuff; they opened for Destroyer, the 'This Night' lineup.

over here (in the uk), i haven't read a thing about them. as far as i'm aware there has been no hype. i just picked it up because someone in the record shop had put a sticker on the record saying 'sounds like a 21st century blue cheer'. that was enough for me.

I've only heard a little Black Mountain, and I've never seen them live,
so I would put them Oneida>Dead Meadow>Black Mountain.
It's true that Dead Meadow's albums leave a lot to be desired, but I think they are pretty hot live. I don't get all the comparisons to Blue Cheer with Black Mountain, at all. I don't think they sound anywhere near as unhinged as anything on OutsideInside or Vincebus Eruptom. Zeppelin seems like a much more apt comparison.

Weird - I never thought of Pink Mountaintops as Krautrock. I love that album though. Is the lead singer of Black Mountain the same Canned Heat-sounding guy that sings on the Pink Mountaintops album?

don't know other oneida albums. "secret wars" is good but a bit too indulgent for my tastes to make for habitual listening. "black mountatin" is completely fat-free, just a really good rock album. the first dead meadow album is too sludgy for me to get that into.

Both Pink Mountaintops and Black Mountaina are great live. Don't miss them.

Also of note: the awesome drummer/keyboard player for Black Mountain plays keyboards for Pink Mountaintops.

ha ha, I just wrote heavy/sludgy/sabbathy cause they all seem to go together, and cause I've heard lots of people compare Black Mountain to sabbath in conversations -- sorry to be so inaccurate in my assessments; please change "sabbathy" to "zeppelinly" in my post(s) for greater thread-accuracy, and I'll stand by it. Sheesh.

i say stick with it. i've only ever heard people compare them to sabbath. when i first got it my roommate asked me if it was some sabbath album he hadn't heard. and they decided to call themselves black mountain, not led mountain.

nah, it's just that the tone of these posts seemed to be one of "you guys are totally reading this band WRONG." When in fact I think there as many references to Head East in this thread than any super-heavy stoner groups. It just bugs me when a group of ILM regulars gets pigeonholed by a googler / lurker.

hey, I'm not a lurker -- I'm just an infrequent but kinda longtime poster (and one who defends classic rock with some regularity). Also, I wasn't trying to correct anyone on this thread as such -- just noting that I'm someone who wasn't that into the album before I saw them a bunch live, because I had been sold a bill of zeppelin/sabbath goods. The live show helped me figure out some aspects of the record that hadn't really come across before (the self-assured simplicity of the rhythm section being a huge one for me) that made me really love it.

yeah, I dunno, I knew nothing about this band before this thread, and then subsequently acquiring the record. In fact this thread is the only place I've ever had contact with anyone about this record, scout's honor! So I've honestly never heard Sabbath comparisons. And yeah, point being, I agree with you guys in that respect -- the record doesn't sound like them at all.

some of their tunes remind me of a more psychedelic version of songs by songs: ohia or electric magnolia co. which is weird, because i don't really like either of those groups. mostly on the songs with male/female harmonizing, like 'voices'

they were great on friday. their new stuff definitely has a sabbath vibe to some of it. 'druganaut' ruled, i wished they would have played the extended version and then extended that out to 15 minutes. cave mountain singers were pretty good, too

Pretty good last night. That chick is more a warbler live, and she looks lost when the rest of the band's rockin' without her.

Still, pretty fucking good. We did get the 15 minute Druganaut, and a pretty sweet version of Don't Run Our Hearts Around.

Live, the Cream Clapton tone of the guitar comes through a lot more, and there's more emphasis on the moog, which I like.

Fantastic performance in Nottingham last Thursday in advance of their appearance at ATP; they really blew me away. They had no new product to push, save for a tour-only 12" containing two tracks that won't be on the new album (plus a voucher giving you a password for downloads of the same tracks). There's also a free download of "Tyrant" from the new album on their website.
