Cher--C/D?

The real example of rockist prejudice for the artificially real.

The woman had entire RIBS taken out to look cool—how punk is that?

She looked goth when Andrew Eldritch was dissatisfied about his mother’s teat.

She’s been on the road longer than the Dead and isn’t dead.

Her new electronica (whatever) is way more fun than Madonna, and you know she’d never fuck something as skanky as Guy Ritchie.

"Believe" is both the catchiest and most annoying song of an entire decade—how punk is that?

She did that inspirational power chord metal ballad on a Navy carrier with about 100 queer dancing seamen—and America swallowed it.

"Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves"—how punk is that?

Classic.

I don't know. Cher sucks.

Dud to the duddiest power. Dud in new and spectacular ways. Like, the WORST. The very sight of her makes me wanna wretch. That VOICE...ugh...what a phony. The most offensive and insufferable celebrity this side of Streisand.

"Believe" was classic and revolutionary.

i think it's pretty punk that her daughter is a lesbian activist.

CLASSIC

I suppose it's also unbearably punk that another of her children gave us Deadsy.

Still (or perhaps, consequently), classic.

Yeah, upon reflection... "Believe" is amazing in that you can't help loving and hating it simultaneously. Therefore, Classic.

Big fat DUD DUD DUD. Cannot stand the sound of that woman's voice. And Believe was not revolutionary, it was just annoying studio trickery.

Cher w/Sonny = soooo classic.

Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down), I Got You Babe, The Beat Goes On

El Janko (JasonD), Thursday, 3 February 2005 08:02 (8 years ago) Permalink

"the beat goes on" is dreadful, but that's not her fault.

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 February 2005 13:55 (8 years ago) Permalink

She has the best goth LP title by a non-goth: "I Paralyze"--and a cover of "Sisters of Mercy" (!)

Without her, could there even be a Bronski Beat?

"Song for the Lonely" easily kicks "The Rising" as the only 9/11 lament that transcends treacle by embracing the mechanics of kitsch to get across a real sense of sadness-hope (there's probably a German word for this.)

Classic, especially for the Sonny & Cher stuff (like Janko said), but not exclusively. Also, for some reason I like "Strong Enough." I understand the love-hate thing regarding "Believe." (I'm surprised I don't simply hate it.) I do think she has a good voice, in a not-at-all ironic way.

Annoying studio trickery can be revolutionary. (And catchy.) And revolution can be classic. "Gypsies Tramps And Thieves" certainly is.

(And FWIW, she can sure as hell out-act Madonna. Or Whitney Houston or J.Lo or whoever.)

classic!

The annoying studio trickery of "Believe" completely changed listeners' expectations for the human voice on a global level. It was utterly completely revolutionary. (and most assuredly annoying to many people).

Disco Cher is like an entire universe.

Classic. I always wanted to do a cover of "Just Like Jesse James" - dictionary definition of the word Epic - but could never persuade my bandmates.

7 years pass...

There's a good comp of her late 60s Imperial recordings on spotify. Listening to it right now and she or her handlers one picked some great songs to cover.

There's also a Casablanca comp on there which I'll cue up next.
