"apparently six figures each member."

Unfortunately it's somehow accidentally slipped Morrissey's mind to mention to Andy and Mike that the figures they've been offered are in Japanese Yen, while the figures he and Johnny Marr have been offered are in GB£ Sterling....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 20 January 2005 10:33 (8 years ago) Permalink

1 million pounds each. apparently, this was a proposal from either Joyce & Rourke or Gannon & Rourke! Although I would guess the former. I still can't believe it myself, especially given the bitter lawsuit and all. Then again, I think all but Morrissey may be hungry, possibly on the edge of starving now, not so much Marr, as Joyce, Rourke, and Gannon.

Sheila Takeabow, Thursday, 20 January 2005 10:37 (8 years ago) Permalink

"1 million pounds each. apparently,"

[a sad, tedious, pedantic accountant writes]:

That's seven figures.

Have you seen the rythm section recently? They are in no way starving

Hey Dudes, you should check out some o dat Phil Collins dat be da fly shit dat n, Thursday, 20 January 2005 10:42 (8 years ago) Permalink

If Morrissey's hungry after the year he's had, it can only be cuz he's EATEN TOO MUCH!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 January 2005 10:42 (8 years ago) Permalink

I wouldn't be that surprised if it ever happened cuz Morrissey's whole shtick is about scratching away at old wounds in that sour old way he always had. He was always about the past. Grist for t'mill innit?

I would rather not go
Back to the old house
I would rather not go
Back to the old house
There’s too many
Bad memories
Too many memories
There...
There...
There...

When you cycled by
Here began all my dreams
The saddest thing I’ve ever seen
And you never knew
How much I really liked you
Because I never even told you
Oh, and I meant to

Are you still there ?
Or... have you moved away ?
Or have you moved away ?
Oh...

I would love to go
Back to the old house
But I never will
I never will...
I never will...
I never will...

"Oh I won't go and be in that band again

But Mike's still overdue a slap with a wet slipper..."

From Holy Moly:

"Just had dinner at Daniel (NY) with some work friends, when I noticed an older and wiser Johnny Marr of The Smiths coming in as we were going out. I stopped to gawk because, well, that's what you do.

As he went to his table, he shook his dining partner's hand - it was a greying Morrissey. Smiths reunion, anyone?"

Morrissey fan sites are rubbishing these claims, but my money is on 'something' happening for Manchester vs Cancer, a charity concert at the MEN arena in Jan 2006. Maybe.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 14 November 2005 22:54 (7 years ago) Permalink

There's no doubt that they will reunite within the next 2 years or so, most likely for a one-off series of gigs. Without M. Joyce obv, not that it matters.

I agree, it would matter to me (the sans-Mike Joyce), but then again, i really don't even want a morrissey/marr reunion. i think it would just SUCK, im happy with the records i have.

IIRC there were all sorts of rumours flying about that Johnny was supposedly going to join Morrissey on stage at some festival in South California a few years back (Morrissey was performing, Johnny was apparently recording in some nearby studio) but nothing came of that.

I still tend to think that Johnny joining Morrissey on stage for a couple of numbers is far more likely to happen than any sort of actual reunion.

I'm not too sure to be honest. I'm certainly not amongst those who are against all reunions on some sort of principle (in my experience for every Page and Plant there's a Damned or a Bauhaus or a Buzzcocks or a Buzzkunst or a Penetration or a Pixies....); however there was something so essentially.... adolescent.... about so much of The Smiths material, that it's hard to imagine how a bunch of 40-somethings would be able to either recapture that or compensate for its absence.

OTM. I mean, id go see morrissey anytime, but i find it hard to believe that the essence of the smiths would be anything but betrayed by a reunion.

JD from CDepot, Tuesday, 15 November 2005 20:36 (7 years ago) Permalink

I happen to think that the Page/Plant version of "Gallows Pole" is far superior to the original. Much of Unledded is a little underrated, IMO.

Thomas Inskeep (submeat), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 20:43 (7 years ago) Permalink

Thomas Inskeep OTM...Unledded was really cool, I thought.

A few of the reunions I've seen recent years, Mission of Burma, Pixies, Bauhaus, Gang of Four, Buzzcocks, were all pretty great, actually.
