Heh, I only put songs I like on mixtapes, I never think about what any of the songs "mean" for the person. I could be sending out all kinds of weird messages.

Is "Lichen" a track off SAWII?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 27 November 2004 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Superstar by Sonic Youth.

I put this on mixtapes all the time, and while I may love the recipient in a platonic fashion, no erotic desire is intended. Kotton Krown might be a better SY choice, but I put this on stuff too.

I would suggest 'What She's Like' by Dexy's Midnight Runners, myself. But it takes up a fair part of a tape. But maybe that emphasises it's intent.

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Saturday, 27 November 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah! It's on disc two I think, so so soft but wraps around you, the sort of thing you'd never share with someone you didn't trust.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 27 November 2004 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post - I got sent WSL once! It was love :(

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Saturday, 27 November 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah yes, figured it might be that one.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 27 November 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

WSL tends to work best for heterosexual crushes of course. I don't know how different the mixtape signals would be for a same sex crush...

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Saturday, 27 November 2004 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"you trip me up" - jesus and mary chain

Haw, I was just recently considering putting this on a crush tape.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 27 November 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Kotton Krown might be a better SY choice, but I put this on stuff too.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 27 November 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

the "something about us" suggestion is to my chagrin very OTM--

Nick Sylvester, Saturday, 27 November 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

The Gun Club - "She's Like Heroin to Me"
Kitchens of Distinction - "Gorgeous Love" (for both genders!)

Ian Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Saturday, 27 November 2004 04:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh God Nick Sylvester OTM about the OTM, double chagrin - I've used it twice, once to a woman technically old enough to be my mother (my folder name for the mix was '4 supercougar'). It has been an absurd year.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Saturday, 27 November 2004 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

even the stars track that goes 'his mother make a scene when I come home late, she look like she's dying and she's twenty eight, I never loved that whore I never will no more, except for a month back in eighty four'?

although I guess with the 'even though I tried I couldn't make her see, I wasn't quite the man she thought I'd be' stuff you could possibly read it as a very creepy ode to coming out of the closet and hooking up with your ex's son (hopefully by a different father)

minolta (minolta), Saturday, 27 November 2004 05:31 (twenty-one years ago)

haha omg i have put seven of these songs on tapes at least ones -- to friends and crushes alike. and i have made v.v. few tapes too!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Saturday, 27 November 2004 08:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not really sure what the Enya track says. (Not to disparage Enya - I listened to not one, but two, Enya albums this morning! I was in someone elses flat, and other good music was scarce.)

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Monday, 29 November 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, so interpret this, from an ex-boyfriend.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:33 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the tracklisting of that serenade tape from years ago I mentioned upthread. It was the first mixtape I gave the then-gf after the relationship was underweigh.

(side one)
Roxy Music "All I Want Is You"
Half Japanese "Charmed Life"
Guv'ner "Coozwax"
Ween "Don't Laugh I Love You"
Nick Lowe "Dose Of You"
Sloan "Everything You've Done Wrong"
De La Soul "Eye Know"
Apples In Stereo "Go"
Go-Go's "Head Over Heels"
Pet Shop Boys "Heart"
Make-Up "How Pretty Can U Get?"
Sparklehorse "Hundreds Of Sparrows"
Matthew Sweet "I've Been Waiting"
Beat Happening "Jamboree"
Sebadoh "Kath"
(side two)
Human League "Love Action"
Bats "Mad On You"
Unrest "Make Out Club"
T. Rex "Mambo Sun"
Replacements "My Favorite Thing"
Beta Band "Round The Bend" (not really a serenade but I figured that a breather was necessary and that she'd like this track)
Modern Lovers "Someone I Care About"
Vaselines "Son Of A Gun"
Pavement "Spit On A Stranger"
Handsome Boy Modeling School "Sunshine"
Prince "Take Me With U"
R.E.M. "You Are The Everything"
Maxwell "Gotta Get: Closer"

Aside from the last track, the tape is in alphabetical order by song title. HARDCORE!

miccio (miccio), Monday, 29 November 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

aw, "kath"

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 29 November 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my God I made the lamest mix tapes in the '80s for girls/ girlfriends. Worst offenders:

"Thirteen" by Big Star
or
"Pale Blue Eyes" by VU

MM, Monday, 29 November 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

aw, "kath"

that was her fave too

miccio (miccio), Monday, 29 November 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I am only now recovering from the mental breakdown prompted by over-analysing every track on a mix in an effort not to look scary.

coco, Monday, 29 November 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Mix crush tapes are tricky business. I was madly in love with a boy (and he with me) until he sent me a mixed tape while we were apart working different cities for a bit. The opening track was "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" by ZZ Top. It was the beginning of the end for us.

Molly, Monday, 29 November 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

haha when my relationship went long distance my mixtapes got more rawk-badass too! I kinda forgot I was supposed to be making tapes for her, not just throwing stuff I liked at her

I'm far too self-conscious about all this malarkey to make crush tapes again. I'll happily copy music someone wants to hear, but affection will be expressed via rude hand gestures and free pizza.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

haha html cut out my [/ nick hornby] at the end of the first paragraph

miccio (miccio), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"playground love" by Air means he's all gooey over you.

actually, if he really loves you, he'll probably slip something on there that only dudes are supposed like, like Shellac or Pussy Galore or fucking Tad, just to see if you go for it. if you respond positively, you're pretty much stuck with him for life, so be careful. you've made him stalker material now.

Dr. Doom, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

dr. doom OTM.

reading the phrase "fucking Tad" made my night.

Ian John50n (orion), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

omg, dr doom SO otm re: playground love (and everything else)

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks you, gentlemen.

Dr. Doom, Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

"the window song" by the mountain goats is a good one.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

"When I'm 64" = it's half-an-hour past time for that restraining order.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I am obviously living proof of the truth in Dr. Doom's statement.

four years pass...

ok if a guy makes you a mixtape with songs that are all like "i love you" and "you're a pretty girl" and shit like that then he's sprung 4 u, confirm/deny

roxymuzak, Sunday, 25 January 2009 06:15 (seventeen years ago)

roxymuzak, Sunday, 25 January 2009 06:26 (seventeen years ago)

i wanna put one of the multiple and great i want yous on a tape for a girl but i can only do so by offsetting it on the tracklisting writing (I DON'T WANT YOU) underneath. i think some you're-so-pretty = nature of popular music : all/strategically placed syrupy side-ending you're-so pretty = crushing on you.

schlump, Sunday, 25 January 2009 06:33 (seventeen years ago)

Matos W.K., Sunday, 25 January 2009 06:53 (seventeen years ago)

Or, you know, a fruitful few minutes of iTunes searching specific word combos. (I'm totally, probably wrongly, taking it that the "you're a pretty girls" and "I love yous" are in the titles.)

Matos W.K., Sunday, 25 January 2009 06:54 (seventeen years ago)
