"gets"

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 15 November 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

My only beef with that sentence is the word "ironic".

(The article it comes from appears to be written from a viewpoint so diametrically opposed to my own that I don't think I'm capable of discussing it without being overly dismissive and insulting.)

"the Ramones had become more interested in being themselves than in changing the world . . .
Um, isn’t that what everyone loves about the Ramones? Besides, you don’t mess with perfection."

yeah, the world can go fuck itself, who cares. but perfection in re the ramones? circa 1979??? give me a fucking break.

(Haha much like everyone else, I guess.)

Jason Kottke contributes to the comments section, which implies Jason Kottke reads his blog on some kind of regular basis.

That's an excellent knee-jerk reason to not pay attention.

also the only people who ever say "We despise rock criticism" (what's this editorial we bullshit anyway?) are rock critics themselves, it's always been that way forever

Incidentally, as some of you now know, I now have smokin' muttonchops.

"...we believe that London Calling is not so much a punk album, but a solid rock 'n' roll album...but we can really only name two songs off of it."

Right.

"They do this by ascribing outsize importance to the lyrical content."

"We would also argue that their lyrics are 10,000 better than anything The Clash ever penned."

Right.

cdwill, Monday, 15 November 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"That's why all rock critics love London Calling."

Except the ones that didn't.

Right.

I transcend your so-called 'fashion'

I think Sasha's the wrong guy to be picking on for this.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 15 November 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, this is a pretty willful misreading. "by March of 1979 the Ramones had become more interested in being themselves than in changing the world" is a pretty value-neutral sentence. and about 2/3rds of the sfj ire can be summed up as "i don't like london calling!" (as opposed to "i don't like the way sfj is writing about london calling!")

The other 1/3 can be summed up as "Ha ha! Beard!"
