S/D: Records Made By Athletes

Rap or otherwise. Inspired by the recent Ron Artest lunacy, it occurs to me: has an athlete ever made a record that's even tolerable much less decent? I say this as someone who can honestly say he's never bothered to listen to one, but I'm willing to be open-minded about this...to a point.

Anyway, this seems like prime ILM material. So, uh, shoot.

Superbowl Shuffle was no damn good, but I challenge anyone to really DO THE RESEARCH and listen to the entire Shaquille O'Neal backcatalog before answering. Cmon, you know it sucks, but can you really speak with authority? Or are you a glib dandy?

Get to work:

Respect (T.W.IsM, 1998)
Men Of Steel (Qwest, 1997)
You Can't Stop The Reign (T.W.IsM, 1996)
The Best Of Shaquille O'Neal (Jive, 1996)
No Hook (Jive, 1995)
I'm Outstanding (Jive, 1994)
Shoot Pass Slam (Jive, 1994)
Shaq-Fu: Da Return (Jive, 1994)
Biological Didn't Bother (Jive, 1994)
(I Know I Got) Skillz (Jive, 1993)
Shaq Diesel (Jive, 1993)

It was in no way grunge -- it was more of an REM-sounding trio thing. At the time that McDowell was pitching for the Indians, I was working at their then-flagship station, which was a sports-talk, and we used some of McDowell's stuff as bumper music for the air talent.

Tony Conigliaro of the Red Sox had a minor local hit with My Little Putt Putt circa 67-68. Who knows, an original 45 is probably worth a thousand bucks these days.

Haven't heard it in eons, but I can't remember ever liking it.

The winner here has to be Cassius Clay's pretty good cover of Stand By Me, but I'd also like to mention Bunker Hill, who made three classic raucous rock 'n' roll tracks way back - this was Link Wray and his Wraymen, with lead singer Dave Walker, who was a pro boxer. These are really GREAT records. A number of old R&B, soul and so on singers had been good athletes too, especially boxers - I seem to recall Screamin' Jay Hawkins had been some sort of golden gloves champ, whatever that is.

LA Rams and New York Giants footballer Roosevelt Grier has an album called 'Soul City'. There is a very good track called 'In My Tenement' on the Kent CD 'New York Soul Serenade'. Unsurprisingly, it is a big booming voice. It was produced by Bobby Darin, so no doubt we will all learn more about this particular project when the Kevin Spacey film comes out.

The Pinefox has a very impressive collection of 45s by legendary footballers such as Glenn Hoddle and Kevin Keegan.

I used to have the 12" of Diamond Lights by Glenn and Chris (Messrs Hoddle and Waddle). I do believe that Ally C has a copy of a single released by Chris Waddle and Basile Boli, which must surely be the greatest thing ever committed to vinyl.

Haven't Vinnie Jones and Ian Wright tried to launch unsuccessful singing careers? (see also Gazza, Terry Venables, Ron Atkinson etc etc)

Derrick -- thank you. I've been waiting for days for someone to take the bait or call the joke with that photo. It's Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, and any resemblence between Messier and that crossdressing Iowan pictured above is just a fluke of genetics. Still a great, great, great band. Hall of Famers in their own right.

this thread is striking me as pretty ahistorical right now.like, there must have been guys in the memphis jug band or misssissppi shieks who also played in the negro leagues; it just seems logical. we just have no idea who they are. and was famous early 20th/late 19th century baseball star billy sunday also a famous white gospel singer or did he just do sermons? i have no idea. also even more recently wasn't john fred of the playboy band/"judy in disguise with glasses" fame a basketball star at louisiana state or thereabouts or was that his dad? i totally forget. point being that music and sports didn't just start yesterday you know. okay carry on.

Torben Ulrich lost a tight five-setter vs John Newcombe in the last sixteen of the '68 US Open, which is pretty good going considering he was 40 by that time.

I fear that Pat Cash and John McEnroe may have may a record or two (Mac certainly toured with his own band, much to the growing disgust of his wife); Jo Durie certainly did (it was 'orrible) and Jim Courier has played drums with REM. Yannick Noah has had several hits in France.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Monday, 15 November 2004 15:54 (8 years ago) Permalink

Lars Ulrich was a seeded teen player.

Bill Monroe & the Bluegrass Shows would promote their shows by showing up in town around noon, challenging all comers to a baseball game, then afterwards saying "tell you what, we licked you/you licked us, but why don't you come down to the dancehall tonight and we'll show you a thing or two about this fiddle music." Could it have worked for Black Flag? Maybe.
