Stewart Copeland -- Overdubs?

On Message in a Bottle I swear I hear him hitting the hi-hat, snare, and cymbal bell at the same time. Does anyone know if he used overdubs?

I wouldn't be surprised if he did. "Walking On The Moon" definitely has a few different hi-hats layered on top of each other.

That's when you're playing dub and the echo of it gets so extreme that your speakers explode.

I believe it was 'only echo/reverb, no overdubs', from some documentary a long time ago.

I seem to remember him saying that on certain tracks ("No Time This Time", for example) there were overdubs involved, and he used to piss himself laughing when hearing other drummers give themselves a hernia attempting to replicate it.

Yeah, mainstream rock hits with overdubbed drums aren't unheard of. Bob Seger's "Hollywood Nights" has two separate drum tracks.

Somehow overdubbing drums seems a bigger crime against Rockism than overdubbing any other instrument

Message in a Bottle kind of bothers me because the overdubs (assuming they are) seem subtly blended in to make it sound like one drummer. I don't mind when there are two drum tracks on a song if it's really in your face awesome because there's twice as much drumming.

You'll probably also find it funny, then, that when I was younger I spent a lot of time wondering over how to make my drums sound like John Bonham's on Kashmir (they were quite clearly processed).

That's constructive though! The drums had to have a certain sound before all the recording and processing, so I would mess around with big bass drums with no holes, etc.

Unless you mean the flanging on the drums at the end, in which case that's pretty funny.

So, Stewart apparently jams with various dudes at his home studio, overdubs and edits the improvisational performances and makes odd videos of the whole thing:

It's mesmerizing.
