"the CD is studio collaborations between Linkin Park and Jay-Z; the DVD is Linkin Park and Jay-Z live at The Roxy on July 18, filmed for MTV's "Mash-Ups"; first single: "Numb/Encore""

I have high hopes for the "Jigga What/Faint" blend.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

christ that could be hot

m. (mitchlnw), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The "99 Problems"/"One Step Closer" blend is heavy, does anyone know if they're actually officially working together or is it just more Grey Album esque shenanigans?

scg, Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

the article I linked says that the DVD has footage of them performing the blends together live, which is what I think is cool about it, that they did more than just the usual vocal/instrumental studio mash us.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 27 October 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Who would have guessed that Jay-Z would work so well in a nu-goff setting, apart from everyone? (I've only seen the video for Numb/Encore, which is live and fantastic)

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 8 November 2004 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
hmmm

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Sunday, 28 November 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe this would have been better if the black album vocals weren't already weren't already mashed up with every other song in music history

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Sunday, 28 November 2004 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The "Numb/Encore" mash -- which I haven't heard yet -- is charting in the U.S. Hot 100 now. I wonder if it's the first one to ...

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Sunday, 28 November 2004 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, linkin park's backing music isn't so bad. it's just that they have to find something for that little singer guy to do while jay-z raps. giving him the cop part and "i'm from the hood stupid" verse in 99 problems was unfortunate.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Sunday, 28 November 2004 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't heard the album but I've seen the performance on MTV a dozen times. It's really pretty great--I think most people couldn't deny that the Linkin Park backing music is often quite excellent, even if they can't stand the vocals / lyrics (which I also like, mostly), and they work surprisingly well as hip-hop beats as well (which I guess should be a little expected, considering the rap factor in Linkin Park). "Faint" / "Jigga What" is my fav.

My only problem is when the LP vocals come in after a verse or two of Jay--I think it should just be straight LP music with Jay's vocals, with perhaps some vocal backing by Chester and co. The lyrics and deliveries clash too much otherwise.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 28 November 2004 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

christ, faint/jigga what IS hot!! since i don't particularly like the faint chorus (at least not with the linkin park guy singing it), i keep getting to the bit just before the 2nd chorus (whereafter jay disappears) and rewinding. but i just can't get enough of jay over those faint verses. it's genuinely thrilling.

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 29 November 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

it's 2am here, so i know this isn't going to sound this good in the cold light of morning, but seriously, TEARS OF JOY.

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 29 November 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Faint is a great song anyway, I can't wait to hear this.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 29 November 2004 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Agreed.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Monday, 29 November 2004 00:38 (twenty-one years ago)

every review ive read slates this album.

titchyschneider (titchyschneider), Monday, 29 November 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only heard "Numb"/"Encore" and frankly I'd rather just hear "Numb." It's possible I'd rather hear "Encore" than "Numb/Encore" but I've never heard it. I definitely know that Chester's voice is more effective than Jay-Z's on the mash-up (if also sillier on the "what the hell are you waiting for" part).

miccio (miccio), Monday, 29 November 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Probably true, but I think that "Faint" / "Jigga What" might be better than either song individually.

I'll probably buy this come Tuesday. If nothing else, it functions as a Linkin Park greatest hits of sorts.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 29 November 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I like on the concert version when Shinoda does the first few lines of "99 Problems" and you can tell he was really eager to do the "fuck critics, you can kiss my whole asshole" part. I mean, nobody can say those lines and mean it more than someone like Linkin Park.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 29 November 2004 04:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought he changed it to "you can kiss OUR whole asshole", which is kinda gross

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Monday, 29 November 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

y'know, 'faint' is really nu metal's 'toxic', innit?

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:13 (twenty-one years ago)

There's a "Toxic" vs. "Faint" thread out there. I'm gonna have to try and write about their next album. I think they're one of the best singles artists of the '00s (admitting there's been little competition, especially rockwise). "In The End" and "Faint" made my P'n'J ballots for 2001 and 2003 respectively. Their inevitable comp will kick so much ass, if you can handle 15 shades of blue. Half the songs on Meteora have gone to no. 1 (ok, "Faint" went to no.2 but its the most respected of the bunch) on the modern rock chart. Mixing Depeche Mode, Alice Cooper and Vanilla Ice is a fucking impressive accomplishment. So far each track's whine has been specific enough that I'm not bothered by their inability to make good on their promise to break the habit, but I'm hoping they'll eventually hit their Violator moment and start getting all "hey, baby" and less "I'm not like YOU, Dad!"

miccio (miccio), Monday, 29 November 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

so is the audio section of the package just a maxi-ep .. looks to only be 6 tracks ?
whereas the meat i guess is the DVD .. listed as 72 mins ..
cos i aint paying full release whack for a 6 track 'EP' ? even with the DVD ..

mark e (mark e), Monday, 29 November 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Miccio's concluding point very much OTM.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 29 November 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

You're gonna have to fight me for that one, Anthony.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:46 (twenty-one years ago)

there's more than one place to write, you know!

miccio (miccio), Monday, 29 November 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Finally got around to watching this early this morning, and it's been with me all day. Exciting! Yeah, I know the Black Album has been mashed to death already, but this is the first one that's made me like BOTH artists better than I did before. And I liked 'em both already.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

to each their own I guess....Watched the "mash-up" on MTV yesterday, definetely a low point for both artists (although I tend to like Jay-Z and cannot stand Linkin Park)....Jay-Z seems bored and listless...Linkin Park do their thing most irritatingly, the singer's whine perfectly matching the numetal-by-numbers riffs...if I "don't get it", thank god for that

Space Is the Place (Space Is the Place), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I bought this today. Haven't gotten around to watching the DVD yet, but I've seen the concert on MTV about a dozen times. It's pretty successful, the only main drawback is that Chester's voice is clearly stretched pretty thin on those choruses--he sounds much better on record.

And this is all excellent.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

xp. If you genuinely can't stand Linkin Park, it's hard to see how this would constitute a "low point" -- just more crap from a crappy artist, right? I don' hear it that way, though, and I don't think Jay-Z's seems any more bored than usual -- ease of delivery is part of the package.

Seriously, I think the mash-up elevates them both -- LP's morose whine tempered by Hov's flow, & his big pimpin' given a kick in the ass by their big riffin'.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Don' -- In patois mode this morning, apparently.

briania (briania), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

After a couple listens:

Inappropriate but pretty:

Izzo / In The End

Quite Good but I'd rather listen to the originals:

Numb / Encore
Lying from You / Dirt Off Your Shoulder
Pts of Athrty / One Step Closer / 99 Problems

Hotter than fucking hott:

Papercut / Big Pimpin'
Faint / Jigga What

Ultimately a fanatastic job. I'll watch the DVD when I get back from lunch.
