Reactionary Stooges -- hmm might be a good name for a garage rock band.

the "material things"/house-buying chorus, which garners a ton of vitriol, is kinda funny in light of the subsequent housing bubble implosion

"not well suited" = could not give as good as he got

the late great, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 23:05 (eleven years ago) link

wow, animal collective lyrics...how many guns would you have to put to my head to think about their lyrics and actually have an opinion on them? lots of guns!

i don't think i ever interacted once with matthew on ilx. thus, had no problem with him. same with dom. i was hardly ever on the same threads as either one of them. and i've never read their blogs. does dom have a blog?

scott seward, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 23:09 (eleven years ago) link

i feel bad that i don't think i've ever looked at the singles jukebox thing...sorry you guys! love you all!

scott seward, Tuesday, 8 May 2012 23:09 (eleven years ago) link

think we're in the same boat scott, I pretty much never came across either of those guys posting. don't even know what the singles jukebox thing is really

Roger Barfing (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 23:11 (eleven years ago) link

i think tom ewing started it. i know chuck and frank have contributed which is one reason i feel bad...cuZ i like those guys...

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, 8 May 2012 23:53 (eleven years ago) link

so it's basically that dude is fat, huh

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 02:41 (eleven years ago) link

that seems like an oversimplification, if for no other reason than how many people on this message board must be overweight, including his tormenters

some dude, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 02:47 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, it's some pretty disgusting ad hominem shit and it seemed to happen all the time. I'm not at all surprised he eventually split.

the bile in that singles jukebox roundtable is um... quite something

There's a balletic, Malcolm Tucker-esque grace to this:

lex: Hey Perpetua, what the fuck do you think you're doing talking outrageous shit like this here? You don't know shit about 90% of what I'm into - you don't even know what I'm into. You don't know me but you should know yourself, you narrow-minded little indie fuckwit.

Position Position, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:02 (eleven years ago) link

i have periodically read perpetua since whenever, and yeah he's not a zinger. he may not be much of a critic either, e.g. he's never sued the beasties. has he gotten too much credit for being among the first such blogs? very likely.

he likes stuff and he posts about it. although i'm an outsider, i've never seen anyone specifically complain about him ever. and i suspect that were his gender different, he would have taken significantly less shit on ilm.

xp lol at lex accusing anyone of narrow-mindedness

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:13 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah, the lex pullquote makes me want to vomit.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:15 (eleven years ago) link

hey mookieproof that is easily one of the dumbest things i've ever read on ILM (but if i knew your gender and it was female i probably wouldn't have posted that)

the late great, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:16 (eleven years ago) link

man i can remember chatting w/ him on soulseek (so we're talking WAAAY back, like 02) and him just OBSESSING over ilxors and what they think about him and this was well before noiseboard existed, when by and large everyone was very friendly to each other w/ the exception of a few trolls (even momus hadn't gone full tilt gavin mcinnes groupie/wannabe yet i don't think) and me just going 'yeah, ok' and not really responding cuz he had some pavement bootlegs i wanted. he's a nice guy and alot of the flak he caught was undeserved but alot was deeply deeply deserved, dude had a crazy ego when he was just a blogger and it was only made worse by this even at the time clearly phony couching that he was just a enthusiast, he had no interest in writing for say pitchfork or rolling stone but lo and behold. the singles jukebox the few times i've looked at it has been pretty clearly awful, a dozen ppl trying and failing to hold charles aaron's jock (nevermind john leland), but even at whatever it's worst would be (totally can believe it would be their take on animal collective) i am pretty certain it nowhere near approaches to kind of routine dumbness perpetua has made his stock in trade. i remember when a few ilxors (not counting the ones that already had solid 'careers' in rockcrit pre-ilx) started popping up in eddy's voice music section (and for all the flack i caught at the time re: amy phillips being a poor man's pfork writer i'd like to think history has shown me to be fucking churchill on that front) and esp in matos' seattle weekly and jess's whatever altweekly that was, but in retrospect i'm not sure if tom briefly getting a column and nabisco getting a prominent regular gig (better than sfj isn't even an argument right? nevermind ANY other rock critic w/ healthcare in new york) is worth the huge number of hacks this place has churned out, like it was ilx's ultimate joke on pitchfork: 'we shall inundate you w/ shitty writers'.

i think ott is missing the point that after everyone on ilx wrote for it the tone changed a lot

what i find weird is in the comments section of that post he made about the singles jukebox how every reply gets indented so much that they eventually

fair enough

i am not a critic but i have been on ilx for . . . nine years, and basically only encountered perpetua is fat joeks. perhaps the shorthand needs explanation every once in a while

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:24 (eleven years ago) link

i'm generally not into mocking other people's weight but i always thought it seemed apropos in his case - pompous dude w/ an inflated ego has an inflated body to match

the late great, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:27 (eleven years ago) link

wait who is balls? is balls ott? fuck an ott.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:29 (eleven years ago) link

balls = blount

sleeve, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:30 (eleven years ago) link

o man leon wieseltier was right, facebook friendships are meaningless!

balls, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:32 (eleven years ago) link

it was only made worse by this even at the time clearly phony couching that he was just a enthusiast, he had no interest in writing for say pitchfork or rolling stone but lo and behold.

TBF, as long as I've known him, dude never made any bones about wanting to make a living from his writing.

You Don't Throw Oranges On An Escalator (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:33 (eleven years ago) link

haha leon used to come into my bookstore

he was kind of a prick

mookieproof, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:33 (eleven years ago) link

oh okay i love blount. hate ott. got confused.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:34 (eleven years ago) link

haha mookie never would've guessed

balls, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:35 (eleven years ago) link

haha knowing who balls is makes me less inclined to snap on him and much more able to shrug this sort of thing off. that said, given the decimation of venues for sanely paid music-crit over the past years, and everything else that's conspired to destroy whatever it was that maybe some of us thought it could offer and what could come of it, pointing the finger at ilx in relation to this in any way whatsoever seems beyond bizarre.

s.clover, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:37 (eleven years ago) link

also yes i'm super-defensive w/r/t any criticism of the voice's old music section.

s.clover, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:38 (eleven years ago) link

i thought ilxors made pitchfork better, actually. or maybe i liked some of them anyway as crits and i would like them anywhere. didn't have to be pitchfork.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:40 (eleven years ago) link

no shame in being defensive abt things that are worth defending

yeah, i am too obviously. defensive. i thought it was cool even when it was fucked up. i can't think of anything like it right now.

― puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Tuesday, May 8, 2012 4:53 PM (3 hours ago)

and was never clear why some of ilx seemed obsessed with him (e.g. whoever edits the ilx wikipedia entry)

sarahell, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:50 (eleven years ago) link

o i agree it's just ten (TEN) years ago when the music 'writing' on ilx was better than 95% of the music writing i'd find elsewhere if you'd told me that ten years later ilxors would be all over music criticism esp at pfork i would've assumed that obv the state of music criticism had improved, esp at pfork. and i'm not sure it has. then again maybe it has - tom's popular is fantastic and marcello's then play long is really really incredible, but neither of those guys are getting paid. perpetua is. ilx doesn't bear any responsibility for this state of affairs obv.

balls, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:52 (eleven years ago) link

the wiki edits are easily the funniest thing dom has ever done

12plsrU (electricsound), Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:52 (eleven years ago) link

i never understood it either. but then i don't go on animal collective threads or whatever he was into so i never saw it. and i didn't follow the whole inside baseball blogosphere thing. if you were into that stuff i guess you would have reasons to be mean? i have no idea.

x-post

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:54 (eleven years ago) link

nothing but love for voice's old music section, nothing but love for voice's current music section really or at least much love to maura for the molanphy/shipley chart/radio geek rotation - if grantland had pop culture writing similar to this the gulf between their sports writing and pop writing wouldn't be quite so huge, could easily see molanphy as a bill barnwell parallel.

balls, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:56 (eleven years ago) link

i think pitchfork has some of the best writers around writing for it right now. um, not that i read it much, but occasionally something will get linked and i see good stuff.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:56 (eleven years ago) link

i mean i'm just not that interested in a lot of pitchfork type music, but i think the talent is definitely there.

scott seward, Wednesday, 9 May 2012 03:57 (eleven years ago) link

There's a market near me that I know has really excellent pineapple.

I don't particularly like pineapple, but I know it is good.

Uh...
