SO good.

Little Lord Travolta (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I have not been this addicted to a mix since Erlend Oye...errr, maybe that isn't a recommendation for some of you.

But anway, I might even use the word "funky" if I get more excited than this. And I never use that word.

Here I was thinking this would be an Andy K thread.

According to http://www.environrecords.com/main.html :

07.24.04: UNCLASSICS!
The Unclassics CD (mixed by Morgan Geist) is mastered and set for release on October 26, 2004. The CD will be preceded by a new Unclassics 12" earlier in the month.

I'm more likely to end/kill a thread than start one, not that I don't agree 100% with the name of this thread.

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Baja Imperial by Plastic Mode, really that's all that matters! And a weird version of it, at that.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Victor's "Go On Do It" is the highlight. It even has a moral! I love this mix a lot -- I wish he'd left off "Special Agent Man," though. It's a totally unnecessary encore and no way to follow "We Can Make It," which is surprisingly and perfectly poignant. I think he was just trying to stretch the mix out, since it's short as it is.

Rich (Rich), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Has anyone seen Metro Area on tour?

Methinks I will try to hit the LA show.

hector (hector), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Special Agent Man has a special place in Morgan's heart..

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I will of course be buying this the moment it comes out.

the best bit is the tasteful segues between tracks...

not really mixed as such...and all the better for it.

Im feelin the purple flash cowbell...

D.

I'd fuckin die if I heard Wang or Geist do an unclassics mix live.

he's always on first whenever he plays london doesnt give him enough time to get deep into the mix.

danny boy (danny boy), Saturday, 13 November 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

he did one wed. night, Rich (upthread) was there. Hello Rich. Morgan went really deep, prob. played too many instrumentals and obscure tracks for most, but I loved it and there was a pretty decent crowd of dancers...for NYC on a weeknight. Danny Wang dj'd the unclassics release party a few weeks back, which was pretty good as well.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 13 November 2004 04:45 (twenty-one years ago)

the pluton + the humanoids / massara 12" is long gone.

ambrose, they're releasing another unclassics 12" this month. i think morgan geist said he was going to put Victor out on vinyl in his stylus interview, so here's hoping that's what it's going to be.

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I've only heard a few. Mixed Up In the Hague 1 is the classic, sure messed me up good. Number 2 doesn't have the same feel to me, though I learned about some killer tracks from it, like Junior Byron's Dance to the Music. The 3 live in Holland jams I remember being pretty interesting, mixed up with more new electro type stuff. I remember liking one of the Intergalactic Gary mixes as well.

It's been said a million times though, for the real deal:

http://www.deephousepage.com

If you like Unclassics/Mixed Up In the Hague kind of stuff, check out the mid 80s Hot Mix 5 WBMX mixes, especially Mickey Mixing Oliver.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

the's the mix that helped kick-start this italo craze. The inclusion of new york electro, Patrick Cowley, Kraftwerk, A Number of Names is great for context, but it's definatly stuff like Spacer Woman, Take a Chance, Ali's Shuffle, Sun La Shan etc that blew a lot of people away. The was a big debate on another board about this recently. To most europeans, italo disco is poppier stuff from mid to late 80s. But in american, between the filters of 1) whas was imported by the likes of Emergency, Importe/12, 2)what was DJ'd by club DJs in NY, Chicago etc, and 3)what we know now due to mixes like this, our concept of italo focuses mostly on this 1982 or so sound, what the bulk of euro-italo fans consider just a small electro/space etc tangent of italo-disco, or even, "proto-italo-disco".

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

To most europeans, italo disco is poppier stuff from mid to late 80s. But in american, between the filters of 1) whas was imported by the likes of Emergency, Importe/12, 2)what was DJ'd by club DJs in NY, Chicago etc, and 3)what we know now due to mixes like this, our concept of italo focuses mostly on this 1982 or so sound, what the bulk of euro-italo fans consider just a small electro/space etc tangent of italo-disco, or even, "proto-italo-disco".

yeah, most european sources i've consulted about this usually credit italo (ie the euro-poppier stuff) as "starting" in 1983 and that it ran out of steam by 1988 or so. i'm a fan of both the stuff that owes obvious influences to electro and kraftwerk and the like and then the hi-nrg candyfloss silver pozzoli/valerie dore-type stuff that came later (though i've found the quality tends to decline somewhat the more you go on - i guess sort of like what happened here ca. 1979, when there was just TOO MUCH DISCO being produced and most of it was just flooding an already over-saturated market) though i think my preferences are with records like "take a chance" (my favoritest italo record ever!) and doctor's cat and "spacer woman" and the like. and if these mixes are mostly that era stuff, i am going to have myself a goddamn field day!

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

also, something i've been wondering - when italo finally did fall out of vogue (if it ever really WAS in vogue, i'm not even sure of that) in places like italy and france, did it just sort of peter out? like, was it not even big enough to merit a comiskey-style backlash?

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know what happened in italy and france, but at that point, it got...and remains, extremely popular in germany, poland, and other points eastern european.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 26 April 2005 21:14 (twenty-one years ago)

italo was very much in vogue and huge in scotland right through the 80's. it was thee mainstream club sound in all the 2000 capacity clubs and along with hi nrg was thee gay club soundtrack too. the first shop to stock house imports here (23rd precint) was originally an italo store. what happened was that first of all that sanitised pwl hi nrg sound and then house gradually took over and italo slowly died out. however, there were still big mainstream clubs playing italo here right into the mid 90's and 23rd precinct still had an italo section (mainly selling italo mega mixes) right up until around '97.

i'm not a huge italo fan but i bet the second hand shops here would be a goldmine for rare italo stuff as a lot of this stuff sold by the tens of thousands.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

which makes me wonder to what degree is this italo that was the mainstreem club sound the small amount that people like Danny Wang, IF, Morgan Geist etc started fetishizing? Like any other genre, the bulk of anything is crap, I'm sure to some degree you must feel Kano, Klein + MBO, Thanya's Freedom, Tantra, Macho etc...?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 01:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i am slightly prejudiced towards it by hearing so much bad italo when i first went out to clubs. i think i also heard enough at the time to last me most of a lifetime. saying that, in the last couple of years i have heard a lot of italo that was a LOT better than what i was hearing back then. the only tracks that i really remember from back then that are popular now are klein and mbo, tantra, capricorn and the immortals. at least if and morgan geist have dug out the great stuff as i have heard a lot of djs here who seem to think anything made in italy circa 1983 was classic. it certainly wasn't!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember hearing "Spacer Woman" in sets at Hearthrobs (a freestyle nightclub in NYC) back in the late '80s. The spacier Italo would also pop up in radio DJ sets. I'm guessing it was due to DJ's trying to find something akin to Moroder's "The Chase", which was a favorite.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Wednesday, 27 April 2005 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

First time I heard "proto" italo was on Cultheroes Radio about 3 years back, knocked me for six so it did. Mr Flagio, Void Vision, Telex, Robotnick, Ken Laslow, Peter Richard...just blew me away. I was amazed that there was this kind of music about and it wasn't more popular. I suppose it died on it's a**e as soon as yer Sabrina types came along though and quickly became Italo House - Ride On time etc.

http://www.cultheroes.com/radio.html - some pretty good mixes on here.

The Geist mix is pretty good but the I-f Mixed Up In The Hague is genius.
