has it been discussed yet? i haven't been reading ilm lately

i thought it was a dud at first but it is growing on me, this is the part where the rap breaks down is great

artiste (artiste), Monday, 27 September 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

i screwed up the link but it is prob better to copy-n-paste anyway

artiste (artiste), Monday, 27 September 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

This is the thread where we anticipate Eminem's "Encore"

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 September 2004 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:01 (twenty-one years ago)

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

nick.K (nick.K), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:04 (twenty-one years ago)

this is really, really disappointing

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, i know we covered it on the other thread, but fucking beavis and butthead jokes? and michael jackson disses? and snippets from "without me" AND "lose yourself"?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:06 (twenty-one years ago)

bah, he sounds so disinterested

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:08 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHA mark p posted my exact post

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 27 September 2004 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

He's trying to cop the monotonous drone that passes for rapping these days

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 27 September 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i really miss the Eminem that did "Any Man"

ryan kuo (ryan kuo), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

haha ryan i was JUST thinking that

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

How many times will Eminem sing about pedophilia before everyone is finally totally creeped out?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 27 September 2004 01:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Catchy. But, I'll take him running out of ideas by the time he gets to the third verse (viz, Without Me) over repeating what should be one-use jokes. Pretty good, need to mull it over a bit more.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:35 (twenty-one years ago)

and snippets from "without me" AND "lose yourself"?

AND "Superman". Pretty underwhelming stuff.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

kind of unimpressive, yeah. but the beat is nice and the manical laughing is hilarious.

adam west (adamwest), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I've got something purporting to be the dirty version (that MP3 up there is supposedly "clean") so must listen to both.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:43 (twenty-one years ago)

where'd you get that, edward?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 27 September 2004 01:49 (twenty-one years ago)

by this time its just like, ok heres the standard "wacky" em lead off single.

juiceboxxx (juiceboxxx), Monday, 27 September 2004 02:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the synths in it

astroblaster (astroblaster), Monday, 27 September 2004 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

"im gonna make you dance, its your chance, yea boy shake that ass. whoops i mean girl. girl girl girl."

astroblaster (astroblaster), Monday, 27 September 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the self-references... but i'd agree that it's a bit underwhelming

6335, Monday, 27 September 2004 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

it really sounds like he just did it off the top of his head, that's how half assed it sounds. even as a freestyle it would be subpar, as an actual song, christ. I think i'd rather if he just went all out goth and boring for the lead single just for a change.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 27 September 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

actually this is so bad I'm almost wondering if this is part of his elaborate anti-piracy strategy and he's leaking a shitty decoy for the first single before dropping the real thing.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 27 September 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ehhhhhhh...Yeah, this is weak. Sounds like a mediocre mixtape track. It's doing nothing to raise my expectations for the album.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 27 September 2004 04:12 (twenty-one years ago)

(it sounds like the obligatory Slim Shady single he was joking about having to make on "Without Me" -- "nobody wants to hear Marshall no more, they want Shady, I'm chopped liver" -- and if you want Shady, this is what he'll give you...)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 27 September 2004 04:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the boy/ oops / girl girl girl" thing sounds like a sisqo joke (the cadence is from "the thong song"). you'll say it's about five years too late for that but hell, he quotes beavis here too.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 27 September 2004 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I cannot tell the difference between the supposed dirty version I have and that one on that link.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 27 September 2004 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Are we sure this is it? It seems to rip whole verses from so many old tracks... sounds more to me like an elaborate spoiler.

Jason J, Monday, 27 September 2004 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard it on the radio yesterday.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 September 2004 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow. Talk about running on empty.

Jason J, Monday, 27 September 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

sucks real bad.

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 27 September 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I now have no desire to hear this single.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 27 September 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

i like al's conspiracy theory. it gives me hope.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 27 September 2004 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I've had a very distinct feeling since 8 Mile that the next Eminem album was gonna be a complete wipeout. If he proves me wrong I'll be glad, but I just get the feeling that he doesn't have much left in him (and I haven't downloaded the track yet, I will now).

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 27 September 2004 14:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno, there was lots to like about his verses on "paitently waiting," "hey lady" and the "lean back" remix. i don't think he's tapped, just lazy!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 27 September 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not what I meant, those were ok.

i don't think he's tapped, just lazy!
well yeah, but to much lazy will eventually = tapped.

Re: mp3
C'mon Mathers, this is a joke right? Riiiiiiiiiiiiight? Please?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 27 September 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Man it seems like you guys are ENTIRELY missing the point.

Not that it makes this a GOOD song. In fact, it is unDOUBTedly one of of his worst singles.

But I thought it would have been obvious - this is another layer in his meta-style self analysis.

He sounds bored as hell on purpose. It's gotten to the point where he's mocking his own music, mocking what it takes for him to get a hit. This is CLEARLY a purposeful tactic, which I find absolutely fascinating. Like to avoid becoming formulaic he's intentionally embraced the formula, he even SAYS "this is the part where it gets real quiet" and quotes from a bunch of his songs and says things that sound like he's attempting to be provocative and shocking all while sounding disinterested. Its like he's almost making fun of his audience, DARING them to like something that is so clearly mocking his own formula.

THAT SAID. Despite whatever intentions he has for this single, its still not a fun song to listen (which, like I said, seems to be the point).

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

well yeah, but to much lazy will eventually = tapped.

But he's not! He's been burning it up on recent mixtapes. He's making fun of the IDEA of being tapped. It appears, based on reactions, that he's fallen on his face. But he's embracing everyone's predictions for "where can he go now?!"

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

but WHAT IF eminem's SELF-REFERENTIALITY has itself become a SCHTICK so BLED DRY that there's little FASCINATING about slim shady MAKING A SONG ABOUT MAKING A SONG ABOUT MAKING A SONG anymore?

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Stop mocking my CAPS lock PROBlem, you JERK! ;)

He actually hasn't gone this far out before, gone to this level where he actually sounds bored making a song where he recycles everything about his old music - the audience was always in on it in the past as well. You're making it sound like I'm defending this approach, or saying that it makes his music good, which it clearly doesn't - the song sucks. I just think it'll be fascinating to see whether his audience embraces it.

Like I said - the song isn't fun to listen to. It's sort of the point though.

And no, he hasn't done this before.

He's never don

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure where that last sentence came from.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Next album he'll have to make a great song making fun of making a song about the idea of being tapped.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

haha exactly.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Having the "Guess who's back, back again" refrain in the beginning AGAIN totally bums me out. I see what djdee is saying, that's why I said it's gotta be a joke.
Burning it up on mixtapes does not necessarily = burning it up on the proper LP where he may be trying to hard and bogging things down in meta-songs and "serious" songs.
We won't know until we hear it.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:29 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry if i sounded like i was on the attack djdee, it's just that i didn't feel anyone here had "missed the point", if the point was "here is a lousy eminem song about being a lousy eminem song".

m. (mitchlnw), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post
I don't know why I keep using "to" when I mean "too".
I'm usually not that retarded.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"He's never don"...ned a cape? He has, though.

The song is awful. I am praying for it to be a prank. And - never thought I'd say this - Pitchfork OTMFM regarding the abject awfulness of the line "Look who's back with a brand new rap."

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

haha they hit that 'point' on the head.

But saying "wtf why is he quoting his old songs this sucks!" is like ... well duh.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost to m.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i wondered that at first too! i don't think it is though.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 8 October 2004 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i've heard this song a bunch more on the radio and...i have revised my opinion to fall in with everybody else...it's not very good.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

is there a mixtape compiling his beef freestyles with benzino and ja rule? that would rule....those are some of his best verses ever.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that a BOBCAT GOLDTHWAIT sample in this song? ARGHARGHARGHARGHARGH

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

pee wee herman.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh right! I knew it sounded familiar.

Today's secret word is...SPUNK. Kids, whenever we hear the secret word, what do we do?

Kids: SCREAM!

That's right...scream reall loud!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It never ceases to amaze me what people will defend on this board, and how they'll choose to defend it.

I'll repeat what I said on the blasphemy thread about Destiny's Child: if you like this song, go ahead and saw your ears off, because they're not doing you any good. And if you like the video, you might as well rip your eyes out and donate them to the nearest hospital's transplant unit.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:58 (twenty-one years ago)

ladies and gentleman, his name is phil freeman and he is a good guy at being on the motherfucking money.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 8 October 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

haha phil i bet ornette would have loved this song.

Dave M. (rotten03), Friday, 8 October 2004 17:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I really cannot get a handle on this song. I guess I have to agree that this song sucks but in a completely fascinating way.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 8 October 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

For an example of why Eminem does not still suck check out "Crunk Juice (40 oz)" from dj smallz southern smoke X mixtape.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 11 October 2004 00:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the video is startlingly low-budget looking (At least on the net). This album could so well be his Around The World In A Day (I'm saying that in front of everybody but Dan).

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 October 2004 00:18 (twenty-one years ago)

You follow your breakthrough pop-culture pinnacle with THIS silly toss-off shit!?!?!?!!

manthony m1cc1o (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 11 October 2004 00:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I like it.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Monday, 11 October 2004 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

SOHH.com reported the continuing rumor that this is a fake to throw off bootleggers...does anyone have any facts to back this up or is this just another case of urban legend/wishful thinking on the part of folks like me that HOPE it's fake?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Considering there's a video (even if it does look 'cheap') and it's all over radio, I doubt it can be a fake.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I still think it's pretty lazy and slight compared to the lead off singles from his other albums, but "Just Lose It" has definitely grown on me. I'd be lying if I said I didn't think it was fun.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, thus my disdain, since I hate fun. Oh wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't get this @%#$^#$^ song out of my head. It reminds me, improbably, of Bloom County for reasons I can't put a finger on.

AGH AGH AGH AGH!!!!!

That's more "ACK! THPTH!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:01 (twenty-one years ago)

saw eminem do a phone-in interview on B.E.T. over the weekend and they asked eminem about this song. he said something to the effect that he could make something up about the song was about but that really - 'the song means nothing'. he also commented on the video and said it was sort of a disaster and that 'it is what it is'

6335, Monday, 11 October 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

AUGH! AUGH! + hairball = ACK! THPHPT!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Does 'fake' in this context mean 'an Eminem single that won't actually be on the album'?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

“Marshall, what’s in YOUR anxiety closet?”

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Btw I listened to Scott Thompson's version of 'Stan' this morning and roffled.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 11 October 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

This must be the first time a piss-take's ever inadvertently gone Top 10.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 11 October 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The singy part in the middle has grown on me quite a bit.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 11 October 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe my sense of humor is infantile, but when I heard this on the radio for the first time, I cracked up. But I liked "My Band" too, and I thought "Lose Yourself" was a way overrated, joyless piece of work.

the strangest part of that link is that apparently SOHH.com abbreviates Michael Jackson's name as "MiJac".

the weirdest thing about the video = kids dancing!

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Listening to this now. The beat itself is pretty weak; the sentiment is surprisingly vicious and anarchistic:
"In these closing statements: if they should argue; let us beg to differ, as we set aside our differences and assemble our own army to disarm this weapon of mass destruction that we call our president... for the present... and mosh for the future of our next generation to speak and be heard."
Em's army has no stop/loss policy, kids.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Can't help but be reminded of Bush's "armies of compassion".

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
I can't help thinking that em's new single qualifies as some sort of child-abuse. hush little baby? no, you hush, ya big friggin' weirdo. and i don't know why other songs where he talks to his kid didn't make me feel this way. this one just really bugs the hell out of me. (i keep hearing it on the radio in the car. i'm assuming it's his latest single from the album.)

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 31 January 2005 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

BOY, I was angry about this album.
In retrospect, there WAS three good tracks on there (yellow brick road, big weenie, and rain man) and that's probably enough.
But the rest is _SO_ bad...
