Just heard this on the radio in the supermarket. What a great song. Is it time yet for a massive reevaluation of Phil's 80s work?

Quite agree, at least as far as the early-mid '80s stuff is concerned; he kind of lost me with his give-a-penny-to-the-poor-wino-in-the-street-pah-I'm-going-to-leave-Britain-if-Labour-win-the-election type songs.

I would say (and indeed have said in the past) that "Sussudio" is a better variation on "1999" than "1999" itself.

Also he did a fantastic production job on Frida's first solo album, Something's Going On. Her reading of "If You Know What I Mean" is as heartbreaking as anything in Abba's blue period.

"In The Air Tonight" was a pretty avant-garde hit single by early 1981 standards. People forget that Face Value got rave reviews in the weeklies at the time; it was compared to Fripp's Exposure among other things.

I only find him interesting in the sense that, since the Boomers were still the largest generation in the '80s, there was a lot more older, ugly people having big chart hits. In the '90s Unplugged turned most of these guys into nostalgia hounds or Disney slaves, and now youth truly reigns supreme. It's funny to think about people who look like Phil Collins getting on MTV today.

"Sussudio" is some sort of classic of the genre. It's nice enough to hear it on the radio or whatever maybe once every two or three years. Phil Collins has his moments he was a hip hop idol.

I don't get all this spawn of Satan stuff. What Phil Collins did in the 80s may not have been revolutionary but he was a competent exponent of one of the main things that happened in 80s pop, the fusion of R&B and rock. It's what Michael Jackson was doing, to some extent it was what Prince was doing (and to my ears Purple Rain is a bit a dirge, I might even consider Sussudio to be the better track). I won't say Collins was better than Prince, but I think 80s Collins stands up to 80s Michael Jackson pretty well. I think a lot of the venom Phil Collins attracts is to do with the fact that he's a balding, chubby, white middle-class English ex-progger, and not to do with his music.

well i think in terms of production yes SOME of Collins stuff could hold a candle to SOME of Jackson's...'Easy Lover' and 'Beat It' hard to separate for example, and most people seem to agree 'Against All Odds' is a strong track. obviously Jacko was on a completely different planet in many other respects tho it's a funny comparison when you recall Collins mocking Jackson in the video for Genesis 'I Can't Dance'. otherwise you're otm.

In The Air Tonight is indeed classic, much better than Sussudio. It's not much like anything else Collins did though, its influences seem to be more New Wave, with the synths and nicking the drum sound from Bowie's Low etc.

I remember well the days when Phil was huge, and the very idea of him pisses me off for as many reasons (extra-musical and otherwise) as anyone, but I can grudgingly recognize a certain amount of talent in various of his works. (His huge drum sound, for instance, was pretty original & innovative, for better AND worse.) "Sussudio" ain't one of my favourites, but it sounded good in "American Psycho." I like the sporadic spastic-nail-gun chugging, and I admire Phil for inventing the nonsensical name "Sussudio" and using it for its rhythmic swing - and NOT attempting to rhyme it with anything.
Inventing words merely for the sake of rhyming is laziness, and the mark of a true hack. (Exception: Theodor Seuss Geisel, who basically invented the technique.)
