Really?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 10 September 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

No.

Well, they try to. There is also a pronounced Strokes influence, you know. And their name? Don't get me started.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Friday, 10 September 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're into indie telephone vocals, you'll like them.

David Allen (David Allen), Friday, 10 September 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Reading the question a bit closer, yes. They work within that "spirit," I think. Better answer: maybe Felt? I am no expert, I admit, Orange Juice though I do love. I've long had plans to start a glorified OJ tribute band -- FF have made this seem more viable, less smart.

Haircut One Hundred sounded like what OJ perhaps would have done had Edwyn let himself really go for the pop thing. Nick Heyward admitted on more than one occasion that he took most of his inspiration from the OJ sound and style.

I, incidentally, apparently sound like Paul Haig whoever I am trying to imitate when I sing, according to fellow ILM-er Daniel aka Japanese Giraffe.

darren (darren), Friday, 10 September 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, don't forget the first two Flipper's Guitar albums, as well. Very 'the sound of young Scottorando desu ne'

Give the Bodines "Therese" a go.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

What about the June Brides or maybe the Fire Engines... kind of.

The too-obvious suggestion is to check the other Postcard participants - early Aztec Camera and Go-Betweens may or may not share some of the specific characteristics you seek.

Bodines seconded!

Nag! Nag! Nag! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Friday, 10 September 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Fire Engines from the 80s
Yummy Fur from the 90s

I was just reading the Suway Sect threads. Certainly a shared sensibility.

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 10 September 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Jens Lekman, kind of, sort of.

dlp9001, Friday, 10 September 2004 23:49 (twenty-one years ago)

The Happy Family had members of Josef K and the music is pretty similar.

Bimble (bimble), Friday, 10 September 2004 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Care of the Cow?

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 11 September 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Well they remind me a little of Orange Juice. Very little.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 11 September 2004 00:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone else remember Care of the Cow? Could they have had a worse name?

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Saturday, 11 September 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Jens Lekman does kind of sing like Edwyn a bit. And he is good.

Chic! Uh.

Michael Philip Philip Philip Annoyman (Ferg), Saturday, 11 September 2004 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, Gorky's Zygotic Myncy?

Momus (Momus), Saturday, 11 September 2004 22:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Um, The Smiths?

What the shit? I grew up in Syracuse, New York. That orange is the university's mascot! What a acrazy image to stumble across.

Justin Farrar (Justin Farrar), Sunday, 12 September 2004 01:05 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...

look into

Hey Paulette

!

Really. Goes right along with this sort of thing. Late 80s. Really obscure until only recently. They've just had everything they've ever done re-released on one lp, on Clarendon. Singer sounds like he wants to be Edwyn of Orange Juice, guitar player sounds like he wants to be Johnny Marr, and, they both come close! Nice.

(This is out of nowhere. I'm listening to Orange Juice, I did a search, yeah...)

zappi, Saturday, 26 May 2007 10:22 (nineteen years ago)

Bricolage are utterly OJ copyists. Quite befuddling on first listen, it's like a covers band.

Mister Craig, Saturday, 26 May 2007 11:04 (nineteen years ago)

Although poppier, you might like Dogs Die in Hot Cars.

paulhw, Sunday, 27 May 2007 03:40 (nineteen years ago)

ludus are reminiscent of orange juice, but w/female vox
