Oh *please*. Hype Williams.

This is rather obvious, but I think it's John Waters all the way. As for the band, all I can come up with is Heather Matarazzo, Natasha Lyonne, and Selma Blair.

I hope we get to see their pal Foot Foot. Apart from that, I'm scared by the whole concept of Cruise making a movie about this...but it might be grimly entertaining to see them spin it into some Josie and the Pussycats-style shooting-for-the-stars rockstravaganza!

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I thought Tom Cruise lost on the bid. I'll have to read it again, I guess.

I think Christina Ricci could be in it. But honestly, I hope they use all unknowns who can't act or play instruments - just like the Shaggs. (That's why John Waters would be the perfect director - known for casting local characters.)

More seriously, I think there are all too many obviously weird/indie film choices already. Wouldn't it potentially more interesting if someone utterly unassociated with the worms-under-the-suburban-rock bent tackled it?

Ned Raggett, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whoops, I'm the one that needed to read carefully...Cruise DID lose the bid...oops.

Like er who -- Michael Bay?

Andy, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

FUCK YES! Imagine the Shaggs in a tense down-to-the-wire terrorist situation assisted by Nicholas Cage and Ben Affleck as the Generic Hero Meat.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 30 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll admit that suggesting an indie-type director is rather rockist of me.

No, here we go -- Steven Soderbergh could make a Schizopolis sequel, all the while incorporating the story of the Shaggs.

Jigsaw.

I'm sorry, Ned, but Hype Williams is already tied up in another "rock" project - _Get In the Van_, the Black Flag tour diaries. Affleck's starring as Rollins. Damon might come on as Greg Ginn, just to add that certain je ne sais quoi to the project.
