Seeing them both tomorrow night and want to know if I should begin being disappointed in advance.

I saw Blondie play a corporate gig for work a few months ago -- they played at a huge Warner Bros. party during the TV Screenings week in L.A.. Anyways, I actually had a great time. The highlight for me was that someone shouted: "Play 'Hanging on the Telephone'," (their Nerves cover, and one of my fave songs ever) and they said okay and did! Debbie Harry did have to read lyrics out of a notebook propped up on a monitor, but she was in Videodrome and was one of the hottest women ever, so that's forgiveable. Anyway, yeah -- considering it was one of the lamest contexts ever, they put on a great show.

i saw the psych furs back in may or something. a solid show, they always seem to do a few songs you wouldn't expect.

I'd give a nut to hear "Alice's House" live, so hopefully they'll throw that one in.

As for Blondie, I'd give a nut to not hear "Rapture," so I'm hoping they comply.

No Suburus were eaten at the show I saw, Johnny. I hope the same goes for you...

What sort of nut?

A testicle, ____fox.

I saw the `Furs a couple of years back....and it was sort've tragic, actually.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:46 (nineteen years ago) link

Really? Because more than one song from Midnight to Midnight in a set might qualify as tragic to some people (including me, maybe). Was it just a sloppy performance overall?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:48 (nineteen years ago) link

They were playing with the Bunnymen at the Beacon Theatre. It was just sort've phoned-in.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, this is going to be an outdoor street festival thing (with the threat of rain), so now my hopes are way down for some Butler enthusiasm.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Friday, 20 August 2004 18:51 (nineteen years ago) link

They're playing at a place in the suburbs - like O'Flannery's or something like that ... pretty small venue. Kinda sad.. I assumed Butler wasn't even with them. Maybe he is though...

There are two Butlers still in the band (Richard and another), but the rest are all hired hands I think.

Crikey, this is sounding like the best gig ever.

the bellefox, Friday, 20 August 2004 20:49 (nineteen years ago) link

Saw Blondie in Sydney. Chris Stein didnt make it and the stand in guitarist looked like a refugee from LA Guns. Pretty fun gig allup. Clem is incredible.

Dammit! I tried going tonight in Atlanta. It was supposed to be a 5 dollar show, but it rained in the afternoon and they said the equipment was wet and ended up cancelling. We talked to this pair of soccer moms that thought it was the greatest thing in the world that twenty-year-olds would go to a Blondie show.

The highlight for me was that someone shouted: "Play 'Hanging on the Telephone'," (their Nerves cover, and one of my fave songs ever) and they said okay and did!

Wow, one of the only times I've ever heard this happen!

FWIW, I saw the Psychedelic Furs back in the day (Mirror Moves tour) and they weren't all that great then. Their guitarist at the time inexplicably had more equipment than Robert Fripp & David Gilmour put together and most of it seemed to flake out.

Really the only reason I went to that show was to see the Bangles open.

Saw Blondie in London a couple of months ago, even though I'm not a fan (I was a plus one with someone who works on their back-catalogue) they were pretty good fun. They did play Rapture, but they twisted it into a bit of a funky jam.
One odd thing, they opened (sans Debbie) with the theme to Escape From New York, some sort of in joke I guess.
Clem is great, very much the focal point of the band he manages to play great drums, rock out and grandstand for the audience all at once.

Heh. I once went to go see them (Midnight to Midnight tour) to see the Mission open.

Never saw the Furs, much as I love them, but I did see Love Spit Love on their first tour and it was actually a very enjoyable little show.

Hasn't this been true since about 1983?

My friend K. has seen both Blondie and the Furs this year, and loved them. But he'd love them just for showing up, so I dunno.

I saw the Furs on both the Mirror Moves and Midnight to Midnight tours. They were better the first time. The mix was horrible both times.

ten months pass...
Saw the Furs last night at Shepherds Bush. Richard Butler's voice was hilariously bad - as were his 80s dance moves (arm round the guitarist's shoulders, high-fiving the front row, kneeling down in front of the drum riser, oh yes). Band were pretty tight but all the sax sounds were done on a cheesy-sounding keyboard and the mix was very trebly. Did so enjoy 'Sister Europe' though.

four years pass...

just saw Blondie for the first time ever, crazy-packed outdoor show in park near Coney Island... met fun quota. Did all the stuff you'd expect... except "Dreaming"! The show was free but dreaming wasn't!

Deb sounded fine and moves around well for 64. They encored with "Don't Stop til You Get Enough" and the Ramones' "Havana Affair."

is it worth A$115 to see Blondie in December 2010 (supported by The Pretenders)?

Are the Psychedelic Furs going to put out an album this year? There were rumors that that was a possibility.

Yes! Well, I have a ticket... :0)

I wonder why I never came back to this thread. The show was called due to rain and was never rescheduled. :(

frogbs, Friday, 25 March 2011 18:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I saw Devo a couple years back and the opening band was Bow Wow Wow. Same era, yeah, but apparently the singer was like 15 when "I Want Candy" was recorded, so now she was about 40, came out in this vinyl-like skin tight outfit and all I can say is woof woof arf arf woof

frogbs, Friday, 25 March 2011 19:10 (thirteen years ago) link

lol
