which brand of synths were used in Hall and Oates "i can't go for that" and "one on one". I actually know the TR-808 was used as the drum machine in both songs but i don't know which keyboards.

they used prophet 5's on top of the pops if that's any use. mind you, they might have belonged to the bbc as lots of bands from the early / mid 80's used them on totp. same goes for dx7's in the late 80's.

two years pass...

I recently heard "One On One" again for the first time since it came out. It was a song I had completely forgotten about and I was really amazed by how much I still like it. It doesn't really fit in with their other bubblegummy hum-along pop hits. I wish they had done a whole album with the same sort of feel and sound, but I had H20 at one point and it didn't impress me overall. I agree that the synth sound for One on One and ICGFT were really incredible. Anyone know anything to recommend me by either H&O or someone else that sounds like that song?

H20 is the best album of their imperial phase. If you like "One On One," it's got a few of synth-pop album tracks like "Open All Night" (whose fade-out sounds like one of Daryl Hall's Robert Fripp collabs), "Crime Pays," and "At Tension" that work quite well.

You may sometimes find the answer to this kind of questions in http://www.vintagesynth.com/ or http://www.synthmuseum.com/

And the drum machine is not TR-808 – it's CR-78 which wasn't really programmable.
