How come nobody's ever spoken about this before? I don't remember much from the time this song was 'big,' but I always wondered what the hell the Dead Milkman were talking about! Is that supposed to be funny or did they really not know?

Nobody's ever spoken about this before? Totally could have fooled me.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

well, ok, nobody HERE....to my knowlegde...anyway, what's the deal?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it is supposed to be funny. The character who narrates, who's all crushed out on the punk rock girl, probably doesn't have a firm grasp on pop music history. I see it being told from a teenage perspective.
I'm hardly a fan of the Milkmen but I always thought this was a glorious single.

herbert hebert (herbert hebert), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Considering it's the Dead Milkmen, I'd say they were just being silly/thought it was funny, etc.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Beach Boys covered that song GUYS!!!!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Did they really? Maybe they did, but would that obscuro version be on a jukebox at a diner?

That one and "You'll Dance To Anything" are great. Some others, too. I dunno, I kinda liked them back in the day.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"You'll Dance to Anything" changed our high school vernacular back in the days. "Blow it out your hairdo cause you work at Hardee's" = any person dressed gothy (after a while any moody-looking person in at least one black article of clothing) "worked at Hardee's."

Beach Boys "Made in USA"
The Beach Boys had two minor single hits -- "California Dreamin'" and "Rock 'N' Roll To The Rescue" -- back on Capitol Records in 1986, and to mark their 25th anniversary, the label assembled this two-record set, adding the new songs to yet another selection of old songs.

If it was a minor hit in 1986, it's could conceivably be on the jukebox in '86, '87 ,'88--whenever the song was written. (Beelzebubba came out in '88)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:26 (twenty-one years ago)

right ON, Aaron!

shit i don't remember that song AT ALL...

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Not to mention that it's a SONG, and might well be FICTIONAL, hahaha.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I always thought it was a joke. It fits the character of the narrator well.

Mike Salmo (salmo), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:28 (twenty-one years ago)

that is to say he coulda just made up the girl who's dad is a vice president rich as the duke of earl and the diner and the stolen car and the rest
x-post

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

It was the Beach Boys cover I heard first before the original.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

See Ned's got my back, yo.

and that info I posted is from.....wait for it.....AMG!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 03:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i used to have "made in usa," actually. don't remember "california dreamin'" at all, but "rock and roll to the rescue" was bad enough that the refrain remains stuck in my head to this day - despite the fact that i only listened to it once like seven years ago.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 05:54 (twenty-one years ago)

X-post: Ned - are you saying you never heard the song "California Dreaming" until nineteen eighty-six?!?!

My God...are you really that young? Or were you locked in a cave somewhere?

Wow!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 06:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I always assumed it was a joke, as was the "we asked for Mojo Nixon, they said 'he don't work here'" part was.

"Instant Club Hit" and "Bitchin Camaro" are two of my fave songs evah.
"Can't wait to go check out the Sand Bar"
"Uh... whats the Sand Bar?"
"Its a place that lets 16 year old kids drink"
"Aww, cool!"
"Yeah we can play some video games, buy some Def Leppard tshirts... dont forget, all proceeds go to get their lead singer out of jail!"

... and so on.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 06:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(I wrote that from memory... god, what a nerd)

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 06:12 (twenty-one years ago)

not at all

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 06:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I also love that song "Stuart", the one with the guy ranting about "what the GAYS are DOING to the SOIL!" and aliens and shit. Hysterical.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 06:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Soul Rotation actually put me into a severe week-long depression when it came out. 7th grade.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 06:19 (twenty-one years ago)

the beach boys cover had a meloncholy video that was on TV a lot.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

dan otm - it was a hit, followup to "getcha back"

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 08:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been singing the chorus to "Bitchin' Camaro" a lot lately. Well just the two lines:
"Bitchin' Camaro, bitchin' Camaro, I ran over my neighbor,
Bitchin' Camaro, bitchin' Camaro, 'cuz my dad's the mayor."

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually saw the punk rock girl recently. Still looked weird.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

the first show i ever went to was the dead milkmen!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Nickalicious Dead Milkmen POV:

1. RC's Mom
2. The Woman Who Was Also A Mongoose
3. The Thing That Only Eats Hippies
4. this song obv.
5. Smokin' Banana Peels

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been trying to convince my bandmates that we should cover Punk Rock Girl, they seem less than enthused.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

My God...are you really that young?

I was born in 1971. Roots music for me are groups like Duran Duran and Def Leppard.
