Taking sides: M.I.A vs M.I.A vs M.I.A. vs MIA vs MIA vs Mia vs

This is ridiculous. As far as I can make it out, there is:

M.I.A. - an early 80s US hardcore band

MIA - some kind of R&B outfit I'm guessing, who put out an album called 'Chick on the Side' on 4th & Broadway in 1990/1

MIA - US techno act, real name: Raphael Merriweathers Jr. 12"s include Schoolcraft Bump/Mississippi Mutants from 1999, I think.

M.I.A. - Real name: Michaela Grobelny. German electronic act with a current album called Schwarzweiss, according to AMG - is this the same as the one at http://www.r-o-t.de/miarockt_frame_noflash.html ? Electroclash?

M.I.A. - Maya Aru, the Sri Lankan born Londoner who put out the amazing 'Galang' last year and how has now signed to XL : http://www.xlrecordings.com/mia/

Mia - some Latin act with an album last year called 'Tentacion'

Two other Mias I found on discogs.com, one of which (whom?) put out a 12" called 'Away from me' on Sweet Records, and the other 'Addicted' on MiaDreamworld.

Don't even get me started on Mya, Myra, Mirah and Mira.

Anyway, the only M.I.A. I care about (I think) has her debut XL recordings 12" out in July ('Sunshowers') and an album to follow. Hurrah.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahahahahaha!

I love you for finally bringing this up! I'm losing so much sleep over it!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

And hair!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:29 (twenty-two years ago)

If I ever start a band, I'm gonna called it MiA.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

wherefore the galang?

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

that's MIA

(I think)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

But is it actually "galang galang" and not "galang"? Wheels within wheels.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

No - the Showbix and XL sites have it with the dots. (see releases at http://www.showbizrecordings.com/)

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

there's also the german pop star mia, did you mention her?

it is seriously confusing and totally fucked up!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

x-post -

That's more controversial, adam. XL just have one Galang, but the Showbiz site is ambiguous the cover art shows two Galangs, but it could just be arty. And next to it, it just says 'Galang'

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

so does she have an album coming or what?! and who produed "galang"?!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Aliens.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Whatever you do, don't confuse it with TOK's 'Galang Gal'.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

That's also great, though.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

oops, i totally missed out on N.'s bit about the M.I.A i was looking for (the sri lankan born one)

m. (mitchlnw), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Produced by Ross Orton from Fat Truckers. Yes, album out in September, say XL.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the point is galang seriously rules

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Fat Truckers? Weird.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Crystal Vibes - "Galang Gal" is also good.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i too favour the galang sri lankan mia. gilles peterson played a new track called 'fire' or something the other week which was good but didn't really grab me.

the german mia, however did do some electropunk type stuff which i did rate a lot. specifically the track 'verruckt'

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, "Galang" sometimes recalls this. Only it's much better.

http://www.pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/images/m/monkey-mafia/shoot-the-boss.gif

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Is she/are they the one/ones I listed in my 5th and 6th line or not, myke?

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

London Callin' speak yer slang na.

yeah she wins on the basis of that record alone.

anyway wtf N.? i didnt think this was your sort of thing or perhaps i just had you pegged wrong (er...belle and sebastian).

jed_ (jed), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

also, galang needs to be 4x as long as it is.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

There's always been a Belle & Sebastian influence to M.I.A.'s work.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

element, I mean.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

pretty sure it's number 4 (numbering them seems like a good idea) but now theres a german pop star mia i'm confused. but i think mia number 4 basically hs made records in most genres hence explaining the AMG links and confusion with her. you really should check out verruckt it is a great pop tune.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

but what the hell does our xl mia have on her t-shirt??

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

fat truckers? weird.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

also, galang needs to be 4x as long as it is.

No! Always leave them wanting more! DO YOU SEE?

x-post yes. weird.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's saying vote with grenades.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Has anyone actually got the 12" - it's not available no more.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

is she tiger affiliated then?

this sentence leaves me a little confused: 'M.I.A. is one of the UK's hottest new talents and rightly so'

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:51 (twenty-two years ago)

It means it was her birthright.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

(to be hot)

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Can we idolizer her? Can we? Can we please!!!!

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

NO

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's observe quietly from the sidelines.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yes adam you are correct but i always listen to it at least twice in a row.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

arwww do we have to?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i have the 12". i might know how to get more.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

>=0

You get everything! You think you can make me jealous, but you can't! I'm fine with what I have! Which is...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

...I...I have a bag of cashews on my desk. I'll trade you.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll share.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

What is on the flipside? Does it sound good?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the flipside just has instrumental and a cappella versions.

Get me one and bring it to Glasgow, lauren. I'll give you a big slobbery kiss.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the record was a split Aside - the flip is by Fat Truckers.

x-argh

jed_ (jed), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i went off to finish making the couscous, and i come back to filthy suggestions. seriously, though, i can ask if there are more kicking around.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

ta.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i think its bound to get rereleased if she has just signed to XL innit?- id guess it will come out after this Sunshowers thing.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I want the original to pretend I'm cool.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:44 (twenty-two years ago)

hands down the best mia ever.

dan (dan), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

What hack wrote that review? He should quite literally be shot.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyway dan, I'm pleased that you posted that link because it just led me here:

http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&uid=UIDMISS70405211938270243&sql=Ai0jb7i28g74r

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

All albums should be called The Sexy Pee Story.

N. (nickdastoor), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Absolutely.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

And all songs.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

more albums should be produced by joan jett and jack nitzsche.

dan (dan), Friday, 21 May 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah both the German electro M.I.A. and the UK ragga-grind M.I.A. are excellent which is seriously confusing. But the only track by the former I've heard is the one on the BPitch Control 2001 comp ("Factorycityelectro" i think).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 21 May 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

What hack wrote that review? He should quite literally be shot.

Yeah, some motherfucker. I people like that who think they can write.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 21 May 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

;)

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 21 May 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait no I'm talking about MIA I think, who I suspect is not the same as the German M.I.A. on Sub Static. Weird.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 21 May 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

so what is her official ILM mia issue number?

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the factorycity mia is the eleckro one i refer to. she released an album called 'hieb und stichfest' which certainly has its moments.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

i think all these MIAs are being masterminded by one wonderfully evil person (who i bet isn't even called mia) in order to confuse people who do not like to be confused about things like this.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 21 May 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

There is Berlin's MIA. (sic) and Cologne's M.I.A. (sic). This link is for the former. The latter is Michaela Grobelny, of Sub Static. I'm pretty sure that even discogs.com mixes the two up in several instances.

Interestingly, this thread is essentially the first graf of my piece on M.I.A. in the upcoming XLR8R. So much for originality!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 22 May 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, by that post I don't mean there are only two M(.)I(.)A.s. There are myriad (M/m)(.)(I/i)(.)(A/a)(.)(')s. (Though not Mya-riad Myas). Those two Germans are just the only two with whom I have any familiarty.

"Galang" sure does rock though.

And yes, this is the most annoying thing I've posted in some time.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 22 May 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

pull my trigger i am bigger thaaaaaaaaaaan

dave q, Saturday, 22 May 2004 03:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Adam, what is that Monkey Mafia record? If it recalls "Galang," or vice versa, is it some kind of dancehallish thing? Because, oddly, one of the members of the Wighnomy Brothers -- who certainly overlap in sound with Michaela Grobelny's M.I.A. -- also has a project called Monkey Mafia, which I can only assume would be German techno. So are there multimple Monkey Mafias? (And what's a primate gang war look like, anyway?)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 22 May 2004 05:22 (twenty-two years ago)

MIA (galang galang) been collaborating with someone for a while now. It's unofficial but i accidentally implied who it was when I posted on gabba last year.

nick.K (nick.K), Saturday, 22 May 2004 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Galang is good, sure, but i don't get all the hype. it's like dancehall never happened.

don (don), Saturday, 22 May 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

*excuse clumsy sentence construction*

don (don), Saturday, 22 May 2004 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

This is bhangra-raggaclash, yo!

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 22 May 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

The XL MIA is Justin Frischmann, no? As far as I know she does the music and Maya (her flatmate) sings.

winterland, Saturday, 22 May 2004 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

It's dancehall for indiekids. (xpost)

don (don), Saturday, 22 May 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, this is fantastic. Has Galang been properly released yet? It has big crossover potential, I reckon. Just absurdly catchy, I think I've listened to it about eight times in a row.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 29 May 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's now deleted, I think, but maybe XL will reissue it.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 29 May 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

can anyone tell me where i can buy this....anywhere? i been searching all over. no cigar.

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Saturday, 29 May 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I think your only chance at the moment is second-hand, though gemm.com didn't have any last time I looked.

N. (nickdastoor), Saturday, 29 May 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

gilles peterson just played her (the only m.i.a. we really care about) again. the brand new track called 'fire', or maybe 'fire, fire'. same galang title problem i'm afraid. i had the stereo on loud and it sounded fine. all accusations of mediocrity from up thread out the window. this is going to be my most highly anticipated album of the year so far. XL really seem to have their finger on the underground pop pulse right now. here's hoping the lp doesn't disappoint!

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Wednesday, 2 June 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

so is Justine Frischmann involved?

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 3 June 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

just read this on the forced exposure site:

"Trunk Records is proud to release Transcargo's debut album Idle Luxury... slightly skewed sunshine/space-age pop in the style of Saint Etienne or a more poppy Broadcast. Transcargo's music is hooky ('hooks harder to remove than red wine stains from a carpet'), different and occasionally quite beautiful -- they write everything from simple ballads to modern glammy blues and liven up the stale sound of pop with their great fusions of catchy grooves and lyrics grooves with an added brass section. Anthony Whiting, the guitarist and producer in the band has made three of the tracks on the new Mia album (released on XL Recordings)."

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 11 June 2004 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
finally heard 'Galang' properly at Glasto when Eddy Temple-Morris dropped it in the Guardian tent! BOMB TRACK, i'm playing it tonight hopefully (with 'Warm Leatherette' naturally)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 1 July 2004 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Ummm, Let's talk about the German M.I.A. on Sub Static. Little Voices is rather good, isn't it?

Tous Les Garcons S'Appellent Little Lord Travolta (nordicskilla), Sunday, 3 October 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

There's also Mia X who did the brilliantly spiteful 'I'll take ya man'. More relevant if you consider that Galang Mia has been working with Richard X.

Affectian (Affectian), Sunday, 3 October 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

So is Galang MIA's album out this year then or what? want want want

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Sunday, 3 October 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

No it can't be true. I was going to start a thread about this not too long ago and didn't. The US HARDCORE BAND CALLED M.I.A. WHY IS THEIR RECORD So HARD TO FIND NOW EVEN ON SLSK EVEN THOUGH I REMEMBER HEARING IT WAY BACK WHEN?! PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE IT AVAILABLE SOMEHOW. PLease.

Bimble (bimble), Monday, 4 October 2004 06:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Glang MIA's album isn't out until next year now.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Monday, 4 October 2004 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the "straightaway" MIA 12" that came out on trapez a few months ago is awesome, whichever MIA that is credited to is the side i'm on.

jason m (jason m), Monday, 4 October 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Has 'Galang' been rereleased and flopped again already?

You reckon? They're all I ever seemed to get when I searched for MIA .
