7) Outkast - "Roses"
- for having a video that partially redeems the song's dead ass

Ohmigod, that song is so much better without the video.

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 22 May 2004 02:23 (nineteen years ago) link

It's a fact! The song as an album track is OK. The song as a radio single is shit. The song as an excuse for the video is awright.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 22 May 2004 02:29 (nineteen years ago) link

Kevin McDonald's cameo = best thing about the video.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 22 May 2004 02:32 (nineteen years ago) link

The bowdlerization of the lyrics for the radio version is nauseating. I still don't care for the video either. It has nothing to do with the song, for starters.

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 22 May 2004 02:33 (nineteen years ago) link

Did you not SEE the golden calculator?

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 22 May 2004 02:42 (nineteen years ago) link

I mean the overall plot of the video is totally extraneous and distracting from the lyrics of the song.

o. nate (onate), Saturday, 22 May 2004 03:38 (nineteen years ago) link

And it (the plot of the video) is kind of derivative of countless other videos anyway.

HEROES + VILLAINS, Saturday, 22 May 2004 14:08 (nineteen years ago) link

TTC - Dans Le Club
Still caning this track, the beat is mental.
D12 and Eminem - Westwood Freesyle
Live mp3, Eminem's verse absolutely kills it
Hyjack N Torcha - Fast Pace
Awful post-grunge vocal almost ruins it, but still sounds fresh
Ghostface Feat. Trife - Biscuits
Really like the whole record, but I'm just so overcome with happiness whenever this track comes on
Black Wire - Attack! Attack! Attack!
Easy to be cynical and label this as another dance-punk cash-in, but its damn catchy and all the elements sit together really well.
Da Ranjahz - Insp Her Ation
Cee-lo totally makes this track - the man can do no wrong.
Oris Jay - Trippin
I can't believe I only heard this for the first time last week...
Sia - Breathe Me (Four Tet Remix)
Vocal's real nice of course, but the persistent drums, percussion and organ give this mix the edge
Lord Finesse - No Gimmicks
Totally classic. KRS sounds so supremely confident on his verse
Non Phixion - The CIA Is Trying To Kill Me
For me it was all about Rock Stars when this album came out, and (until recently) I completely slept on what's by far the best track on there

Elephant Man feat. Twista, Youngbloodz & Kiprich – ‘Jook Gal’ (remix)
On the (still exciting) Coolie Dance rhythm. Actually, I really only like Ele’s bits, but having the rappers at least gives you something a bit different to listen to.

Murcof – ‘Una’

Ghostface – ‘Ghostface’

First Choice – ‘Smarty Pants’
First Choice – ‘Yes Maybe No’

One of the most overlooked of the 70s Philly vocal groups. Their first six or seven singles were all terrific. I love the horn stabs on “Smarty Pants” in particular. There was a bit of a tailing off after that and when they switched labels, although “Yes Maybe No” is gorgeous, swinging soul.

Young MC – ‘Bust A Move’
Picked up the “Ice-T presents Westside” compilation second hand at the weekend. For some reason a lot of the West Coast hip hop stuff passed me by first time (if it wasn’t a massive crossover hit in UK). Lots of classic tracks here, but this one jumps out particularly on first listen.

The Pioneers – ‘Catch The Beat’
Rosalyn Sweet & The Paragons – ‘Blackbirds Singing’

Both from the wonderful Sweet Harmony compilation on Trojan from last year. The second song here is a cover of the Paul McCartney song off The White Album which most people seem to think is insufferable, tho’ I quite like it. This arrangement shows off the song’s full potential.

Lizzy Mercier Descloux – ‘Mission Impossible’
Kinetic take on the Lalo Schifrin theme tune.

T.I . – ‘I Still Luv You’
His parents that is. Aw, bless.

Usher feat. Lil Joneedstofallunderatruk & Ludicris – ‘Yeah’

1. The Streets - "Not Addicted" the beat in this song makes me feel like I'm on a shit ton of coke ha ha.
2. Manu Dibango - "Lily" only one of the seven funkiest grooves ever to shake human ass.
3. Morphine - "The Night" I must/must not heavily recommend listening to this while drunk and heartbroken.
4. DJ Shadow - "Untitled" I once knew a dude who had this as his answering machine message. "They all had ass."
5. Tom Waits - "Black Wings" one of the first songs that ever actually scared me. Still does.
6. Bob Marley - "Small Axe" that little organ "duh duh duht" is just so catchy and right.
7. Princess Superstar & Bahamadia - "Too Much Weight" just heavy enough.
8. System of a Down - "Innervisions" why they made "BOOM" the single and not this, I will never get.
9. The Sun Ra Arkestra - "Nuclear War" I love his big chanty vocal passages, such a mentalist.
10.Mates of State - "Whiner's Bio" this is a great song for drinking coffee and cleaning on a rainy morning.
11.Madvillain - "Curls" "land of milk and honey with the swirls/
where reckless nekkid girls get necklaces with pearls"
.
