i didn't feel like looking for the old threads and they're big anyway and so what if we've got like sixteen 'what are you listening to this month/week/minute' threads on both boards - fuck it, sometimes you've got songs you're feeling and you want to let the people know. also i wanted to see how it feels to create a thread that's certain to generate more than a handful of replies. and lastly, even though i don't really have the energy for it now, it'd be nice if comments made a comeback. but let's not get too presciptive here.

britney spears - brave new girl

vybz kartel - send on (so beautiful. it's also got a noise that sounds like the one when cartoon characters unwittingly run off a mountain)

aphex twin - xtal (i can't see me having any in the near future, but in my head this makes great sex music)

big pun - capital punishment ("THE LAST OF THE PO' RICANS"!)

busta rhymes, fat joe, chingy, nick cannon - shorty (put it on the floor) (even quite disturbing threats of sexual violence - skirts getting ripped from little bitty frames! - can't stop this from being a juggernaut of brilliance. check how just bleezy breezily throws in the ass on fire detune 'trick' halfway through, as if to REALLY stick it to the neps. btw am i forgetting some important exception or are the neps, uh, 'taking a break' from chart omnipresence?

max tundra - cakes (i think maybe he was the last interesting thing to happen to idm, or at least the last one that was interested in investigation emotionalism beyond the addition of minor key synth lines)

tennessee ernie ford - sixteen tons

ma$e - welcome back

east flatbush project - tried by twelve

the clipse - grindin (instrumental)

egyptian empire - horn track

the entirety of Animal Collective's Sung Tongs - best album of the year by a longshot thusfar, an astounding leap from their previous work
Madvillain - One Beer - puts Jay Dee's rap over the same beat on Jaylib to shame...its near embarassing
Devendra Banhart - Charles C. Leary - as creepy as 4 track folk can get

Rich Ferrara (Space Is the Place), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:24 (9 years ago) Permalink

i forgot to put about how 'sixteen tons' has a terrific gangsta lyric - "if you see me comin', better step aside/a lot of men didn't/a lot of men died"

11. "What Do You Want from Me?" by Monaco

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 20 May 2004 21:34 (9 years ago) Permalink

"float on" is actually Not Bad. and that's harder to say than you might think, considering modest mouse (well, "moon & antarctica") basically signalled the end of my close relationship with indie.

i wanna hear that spectre capleton remix.

1. Four Tet - "No More Mosquitoes" (Summer = Woozy)
2. The Streets - "It Was Supposed To Be So Easy" (For that horn riff. For telling my kids, wife & total strangers that "Today I have achieved absolutely nowt)
3. Leonard Cohen - "I'm Your Man" (His voice rumbles my ribcage. Plus the S+M references)
4. Beta Band - "Dr Baker" (Cos his dog was dead and his wife was dead and somehow I hear 4 Non-Blondes' "What's Up?" during this)
5. The Streets - "Blinded By The Lights" (for its crushingly accurate portrayal of too many nights of my life)
6. Paul Hixon Pittman - "Lies, Ties and Battlefields" (Tune follows me around all day and makes me feel better and sadder all at once)
7. Outkast - "Prototype" (More summer wooze)
8. Steely Dan - "Through With Buzz" (appropriately enough, like a wasp trapped in my skull)
9. Ricardo Villalobos - "Y.G.H." (after reading a thread here. this is visceral stuff, physically addictive)
10. Lambchop - "The Daily Growl" (another awesome sticky voice, another personally directed lyric)
11. The Streets - "Could Well Be In" (I'm getting boring about this now)

Kraftwerk - “Elektrisches Roulette”
I had an epiphany the other day listening to this album. I was in my room – I’ve only been back at home a couple weeks so the walls are bare and there’s nothing in here but a computer a bed and a stack of instruments – and the windows were open and I was reading a book of poems, acutely able to pay attention to this song as well as what I was reading. I thought “omg my senses are so engaged right now!” and ran to get a cough drop so I could taste something as well as feel the air run through my beard, smell the freshly cut grass, etc etc.
When I got back I realized how cool the drum part on the song is.

“Untitled two minute noise loop recorded on 4-track”
it’s enchanting but not finished -- 4 tracks is not enough. There was a bird in my house this morning.. I played this and it flew out

J-Kwon - “Tipsy”
I haven’t actually listened to it in days (no I haven’t been leaving the house), though I sing it every time I’m drunk, which is almost all the time. I really need a job.

Balinese Gamelan and Ketj - “Golden Rain (Hudjan Mas)”
It’s really gorgeous and evocative. And then like 5 minutes in this really low bass percussion part comes in and makes me want to fuck shit up.

Don Covay - “Mercy, Mercy”
The simplest song with the best performance never fails

The Rapture - “I Need Your Love”
See titular sentiment

Yoko Ono - “Mind Train”
When you are drinking with your friends you can say “Hey who wants to listen to Yoko Ono?” and they will say yes for the novelty value. You can’t do this with Can, and this song is in fact much better than Can

Kevin Drumm - “Turning Point”
Strangely pleasant and reassuring

Beyonce - “Naughty Girl”
It seems completely aimless and it’s best that way

Al Green - “Have You Been Making Out OK?”
It’s in my mom’s car and I listen to it every time I borrow it. I sing along every time it gets to the “I wanna know can you make it on your ooooooooowwwn” part even though I’m nowhere close to in tune.. very satisfying

Leonard Cohen - “So Long, Marianne”
The way he strums his guitar you can tell he wants to smash it. I find this noble.

To be honest, I haven't listened to much after 1978 in the past month or so.

Lynyrd Skynyrd- Gimme Back My Bullets
This has a great guitar riff. The droning piano line in the background is kind of reminds me of the overdubs John Cale put on the first Stooges record.

Atomic Rooster- Death Walks Behind You
Why wasn't this a big FM rock radio song? The production is great for 1970, especially compared to Sabbath or some of their contemporaries.

Deep Purple- Mandrake Root
The version I am enjoying is a crazy 30 minute jam from 1970. Blackmore and Jon Lord go into spazmotic fits and the song goes all over the place. There is a spacey part in the middle where I think Jon Lord pulls out a hoover or something. I like it.

Black Sabbath- Wishing Well
Martin Birch flat out knows what he is doing in the studio. I love the sound of the bass and drums on this one.

Thin Lizzy- Don't Believe a Word
I put this onto a compilation I made and have given it a few listens, it is quite catchy.

Free- Don't Say You Love Me
This song is intense and quiet. Free was a really good band.

Iron Maiden- Sanctuary
It doesn't really sound like Maiden, but it is.

Yes- Roundabout
The arrangement on this one is great, I like all of the little overdubs that are placed throughout the record. It is very well crafted.

The Yardbirds- Ha Ha Said the Clown
This song cracks me up. It is one of the last Yardbird singles, but I swear it sounds like a Dukes of the Stratosphear outtake. Keith Relf even sounds like Andy Partridge or is it the other way around?

ZZ Top- Brown Sugar
I have no good reason why this wasn't a hit other than the Stones had a song with the same title come out. ZZ's song is much, much funkier and Billy Gibbons plays some ruthless guitar on this one. I can't believe I never heard this until a few months ago, but I had never heard the first ZZ Top album.

Funkadelic- I Bet You
This song is great.

I guess that makes eleven.

Rifle Sport is one of those bands that I should have heard by now considering how much I like Shellac. None of it is in print or at least it hasn't been for awhile; I haven't looked lately and I don't do the whole download thing.

I still have to hear that new Mission of Burma record. It isn't going out of print any time soon, so I will probably wait and cherry pick a used copy.

Never heard of House of Freaks, seems like it might be something I might like. There are so many bands.

Don Covay is one of those singers that seems like it would be interesting music, but I haven't come across any of his records. I'm due to get obsessed again by r&b/soul sometime soon.

I am very streaky when it comes to my listening obsessions. I get into one era or sound for a few weeks on end until it loses my interest and then I jump to another sound. I'll listen to jazz fusion then get into punk/post punk then listen to idm/detroit techno then listen to well you get the point. For some reason, I don't tend to mix it up much.

Never heard of House of Freaks, seems like it might be something I might like. There are so many bands.

Ah man...House of Freaks got no respect in their day. Cakewalk is such a great, understated album with big huge hooks and a strident melancholy twang (kept feisty by Johnny Hott's hyperkinetic odds'n'ends percussion...I tell ya, the man coulda been in Cop Shoot Cop) that is still breaks my heart a decade a change later. They sorta got stuck in the limbo between "college rock' and the alt.country boom that puts dubious folks like Ryan Adams on a fuckin' pedastal. I love that album, goddammit.

I would best describe them as the middle ground between Joy Division and Naked Raygun...The live album (Live at the Entry/Dead at the Exit) is prob. the one I see around the most...apparently their local label - Ruthless Records (not that Ruthless!) was the local label that put their stuff out....Well worth checking out if you like 80s midwest post-punk...

I've heard good things about their two studio albums...you could try record stores in Minneapolis, there tends to be alot more of their stuff around here used for cheap...try these two they might be able to help you track it down:

Portishead - Machine Gun
Kode 9 - Bodies

The portishead sounds like a machine gun and is called machine gun which I like. Seems to do something interesting with the 'space' of the music? Too ignorant about terminology to phrase it better than that. I'm not at all sure the lyrics would work on their own but there's something about them embedded in this particular beat that works, same for the Kode 9 track.

Roxy Music - Angel Eyes

If you weren't a human and were trying to seduce a human, you might construct this song in order to do so, a bit like how the obelisk constructs the weird hotel room for the astronaut at the end of 2001 a space odyssey

Broadcast - Black Cat

Song is not *about* a black cat, it's *like* a black cat

DMX Crew - You Can't Hide Your Love

Like the big names of 80s british electro pop without any of the things I don't like about them, seems to have an actual vulnerability and ambiguity to it, I like Smalltown Boy for the same reason

Brian Eno - St Elmo's Fire

Going to avoid spoiling this by trying to say anything about it, although to sketch something out, a key word in the song might be the word 'we'

Danger Doom - Benzie Box

Probably the width of diction and reference points, combined with the way he says it all with an unswerving confidence that it matters a lot

Fever Ray - If I Had A Heart

Adding 'If' to the idea that people have hearts makes the idea of having a heart weird and different

Phyllis Dillon - Leave It In The Hands Of Love
Factory Floor - Two Different Ways
Kraftwerk - Neon Lights

Can't at present articulate anything about these, more just lying here listening to them over and over.

Re: the DMX Crew track, I mean somehow more affecting than Depeche Mode being 'tortured'. Except I'm not knocking the theatrical exaggerated tortured quality of DM, just find I have to be in the right mood for it, whereas with this track I'm always in the right mood
