From an artistic perspective, who died at exactly the right time?

Jim Morrison, surely. LA Woman is a good album, but with his marked and increased tendency towards self-indulgent pomposity, it's hard to believe he had anything further good left in him.

John Lennon died several albums too late, Ian Curtis died one album too soon. Maybe Kurt Cobain got it just about right.

John Lennon died several albums too late

A bit harsh as there was a five year gap between the penultimate and last album.

I thought he showed good sense in sitting out the period in the 70s when his muse left him, myself.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

You could arguably mention most dope deaths here, declining talent being a direct result of declining health.

The antithesis is Bob Dylan, who SHOULDA died after his '66 motorpsycho nightmare, at his absolute musical zenith.

I think Bob did enough in the late 60s and 70s to justify his continued existence. The person who would have benefited most from dying early is Bowie. If he'd overdosed in '78, nothing would be lost.

Jonathan Z. (Joanthan Z.), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I agree that Bob did lotsa great stuff after '66 - it's just kinda poetic that his brush with death coinicided with his absolute artistic peak. If he'd actually died it would've been like the most hackneyed Hollywood cliche, only for real.

I for one am a little glad Jimi Hendrix never got embarassing

autovac (autovac), Tuesday, 18 May 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I was thinking about John Bonham's death last night actually. On one hand, yeah, he made his mark and if LZ stayed together any longer it probably would have gotten pretty pathetic. Also, who knows what the 80s and production style changes would have done to his sound.

On the other hand, he'd certainly be in demand these days. I wonder if he would have liked hip-hop?

Nonsense.

kraudive, Wednesday, 23 March 2011 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

Arguably, Bowie could have fallen into a Sleeping Beauty sleep in late 1983 and not woken up until mid 1993 and nothing of interest would have been lost.
