In Pine Effect has some good stuff on. as i've stated elsewhere, i'm not entirely sure how well its dating. expert knob twiddlers has some good stuff on too

gareth, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

In Pine Effect I like a lot. Just listened to it a week ago and it dates pretty good.

I prefer Royal Astronomy.

dog latin, Monday, 5 November 2001 01:00 (11 years ago) Permalink

I hate Royal Astronomy. With a passion. Mediocre tunes and boring knob-twiddling let down by unbelieveably poor production... Yeah. Poo IMHO.

1 year passes...
i'm reviving this because:

a. he has a new record out
b. i just bought royal astronomy

i haven't actually listened to it yet, but i'll post my thoughts when i do...

Had a lot of fun back in the day with Mu-ziq vs. The Auteurs.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Thursday, 22 May 2003 14:06 (9 years ago) Permalink

I can't believe no one mentioned Lunatic Harness. It's the best, yo. Royal Astronomy blows.

NA. (Nick A.), Thursday, 22 May 2003 14:07 (9 years ago) Permalink

Lunatic Harness starts good, gets boring during the end. I also like Bluff Limbo, though it's not considered a classic. Vs. the Auteurs is fun too, it has a lot more to do with µ-ziq than the Auteurs (which is good). In Pine Effect is still probably his most consistently good album, the other ones have their good and bad moments; also, it has his best track ever (Roy Castle). Royal Astronomy would be brilliant without those pseudo-classical tracks, though I do like the one with the hip hop beats.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 22 May 2003 14:27 (9 years ago) Permalink

Classic. Tango N'Vectif really holds up after god knows how long.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Thursday, 22 May 2003 14:27 (9 years ago) Permalink

I like the new one, it's like his normal stuff from Lunatic Harness but with more clicks and static.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 22 May 2003 14:32 (9 years ago) Permalink

i'm enjoying "royal astronomy" a lot. The two tracks with female vocals - "the fear" and "goodbye, goodbye" - are gorgeous, and "slice" also. the only ones i don't like much are the two full-on drum'n'bass ones, but then, i can never really get into d'n'b.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:36 (9 years ago) Permalink

yeh man. I'll say it again, Royal Astronomy is ace. It's by far his most accomplished album. Way better than Lunatic Harness which was a rip off of the RDJ Album with really annoying drill'n'bass bits that went absolutely nowhere for 6 mins each. Listen to the Hwicci Song and The Fear and then tell me Royal Astronomy blows. I do agree about the overlong drum'n'bass tracks though, killian. They are fun for bombing around on your bike to though.

Anyone heard the new one yet then?

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:12 (9 years ago) Permalink

royal astronomy is quality, especially the "psuedo-classical tracks"
pity my copy is scratched to fuck
the fear is exceptional
i really like tango n vectif and in pine effect as well(the pseudo classical track on that is possibly my favourite)
has anyone noticed the postman pat bit on tango n vectif track 3
worth listening to again if you haven't,its fucked up

robin (robin), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:28 (9 years ago) Permalink

agreed. the classical stuff on royal astronomy is most defaintely cool. its my fav album of his.
the new one bilious paths is pretty cool, not as good as royal astronomy :)

hes a pretty good dj, actually, probablky the best of all those sort of people.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 23 May 2003 09:16 (9 years ago) Permalink

oh yeah,i saw him dj as well
pulled of mixing gabber with hiphop better than the million crusties i've seen try it,although he played a lot of mediocre drum n bass as well

robin (robin), Friday, 23 May 2003 12:37 (9 years ago) Permalink

Just got the new one. I love the slight "My Red Hot Car" homage / injoke on the first track.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 23 May 2003 14:24 (9 years ago) Permalink

report back on whether the rest of it any good if you get the chance,i would like to hear it but finances are tight...

robin (robin), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:03 (9 years ago) Permalink

Another for vs. the Auteurs. I think his best is his remix of "On", though. Peaked early.

Lukas (lukas), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:46 (9 years ago) Permalink

S: the two Kid Spatula albums, esp. Spatula Freak for the more metallic/machine side of µ-Ziq; Slag Boom van Loon (Paradinas/Paap) - excellent and very different - Carnatic IDM?; the first couple of Tusken Raiders 12"s - potent, gritty electro a la I-F/Clone; the exotica/electro mutations of his Gary Moscheles and Jake Slazenger material (with minor reservations. some of it's great, some of it's kinda cheesy though still fun); the Kinesthesia, Nav Katze, Ultramarine, Múm and AFX remixes.

maybe i'm a sucker, but i wouldn't D: any of Paradinas' productions outright. they're all worth hearing. ok, maybe Urmur Bile Trax 1+2. never grabbed me as anything more than rough drafts for the great Lunatic Harness.

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Friday, 23 May 2003 16:20 (9 years ago) Permalink

Actually Track 2 uses the "ba-dup" loop from "Come on My Selector" too. You can hear a "Go Plastic" influence quite heavily, although in no way near as harsh as that particular rough gem. It's hardly a ground breaking record, but it's consistent and constantly engaging. Not as individual as "Royal Astronomy", but it holds together and holds your interest.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 23 May 2003 16:27 (9 years ago) Permalink

is there a list of those extended characters anywhere?
i remember searching for one a while ago but never finding anything

robin (robin), Friday, 23 May 2003 19:23 (9 years ago) Permalink

"Megaphonk" off the first Jake Slazenger album is a long-time favorite. I put it on a C90 for a friend, who could never remember the name of it but took to calling it "the happiest song in the world" as shorthand. (It does kind of have a Sesame Street vibe, in addition to the more overt Booker T. one...)

what do people think of "the fear"? i remember the first time i heard it i had to rush out and buy the single and then the album. i still think it's beautiful - but what's with the rubbish clipping?

um... listening now. I'm hoping I've downloaded a non-fake version but the first few tracks all sound very similar thematically. there's no drill'n'bass madness on here at all. Is this what everyone's got or have I got a duff?

the next grozart, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:08 (5 years ago) Permalink

lol i havent listened to it since my last post. i guess its not VERY VERY good.

chaki, Tuesday, 26 June 2007 01:42 (5 years ago) Permalink

i listened to it again. it's very restrained compared to anything else he's done, but not in a bad way. bit of a dubstep influence in there.

What do you guys think of Tengo n' Vectif? I have the ridiculously long two disc version and I'm finding it to be an awful lot to swallow all at once, equal parts brilliance and "does he really know what he's doing here?". Maybe will take a few more listens to really get into, but I'm feeling like this is a pretty excellent "intro to IDM" album. I have Lunatic Harness which is definitely a bit hookier but I agree with the above that the second half inspires nothing in me whatsoever (as of like seven years ago that is)

frogbs, Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:27 (5 months ago) Permalink

dud

am0n, Thursday, 29 November 2012 16:58 (5 months ago) Permalink

Idk, imo everything on the second half of Lunatic Harness is great except maybe "wannabe"
1st half has the lame title track and lamer "approaching menace".

brimstead, Thursday, 29 November 2012 21:31 (5 months ago) Permalink

I don't like Approaching Menace either but the title track is maybe my favorite u-ziq tune

frogbs, Friday, 30 November 2012 00:30 (5 months ago) Permalink

Like Squarepusher, this guy has moments of amazing sandwiched with meh. Royal Astronomy's my favourite, but many will vouch for Lunatic Harness. I haven't listened to Bluff Limbo for a long time and I don't think I've heard Tango'n'Vectif but as far as proto-IDM records go, I think they must've been cool at the time. I'd say he's better as a discerning labelhead and tastemaker - Planet-µ has released some of my favourite electronic records in recent years.
