i love you russ.

i won't be here for most of these (going back to providence for summer), but still, excellent work.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 1 May 2004 06:37 (twenty years ago) link

best Lit ever!

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Saturday, 1 May 2004 12:00 (twenty years ago) link

If the other shows I'm working on work out, it'll be amazing...

despite all that was wrong, I still miss The Cooler.

Russ, Saturday, 1 May 2004 14:40 (twenty years ago) link

Man, I can't wait to go to NYC this summer! Please tell me you're booking some shows later in July and August, Russ!

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Saturday, 1 May 2004 16:15 (twenty years ago) link

Tarantism (Caroliner roadies)

There's a UK band called Tarantism already, made up entirely of Hawkwind roadies. Beat that, yanks.

udu wudu (udu wudu), Saturday, 1 May 2004 16:21 (twenty years ago) link

I want to dance to post-electroclash punk-funk with Matthew Bower at LIT!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 1 May 2004 19:02 (twenty years ago) link

The Cooler was like The Factory to me. It seemed like, post hardcore / punk, the only 'scene' i ever knew and loved was Monday nights at the Cooler - seemed like Tower Recordings, Hall of Fame and other semi-regulars just got better every week, and there'd always be a band like Strapping Fieldhands or Windsor for the Derby booked to close the show. The owner was a major assfuck from what I remember, but it really was a great place to see shows, and from what I remember, it was pretty fun to play there as well. I miss it too.

But from what I've been hearing from Russ, this summer (my last in NYC, god willing) should be fun as hell, show-wise. Some of those line-ups might just get me to leave my house for a change.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 1 May 2004 19:22 (twenty years ago) link

Jeff - yes! I'm already starting to book through the summer, into September.

Roger - I feel the exact same way re: The Cooler's free Monday night series. I saw so many amazing shows there. also, as of today, I'm trying to get the Fieldhands to play at Lit!

here's yet another show...my group Watersports was asked by Aaron Rosenblum (Son Of Earth, The Believers, etc) to collaborate next Tuesday. We play first on a bill with Fear And Trembling and one other:

russ - i need a watersports tape - lemme know what you need for trade

we playin wit aaron and krefting and co tomorrow nite in northampton, openin for hurley - psyched

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 1 May 2004 19:40 (twenty years ago) link

oh hey Russ, looks like I'll miss Tuesday, A's band is playing at Eat Records in Greenpoint that night.

Super-psyched for the Tommy's show. Ian, you gonna be around for that?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 03:18 (twenty years ago) link

Joel: Yeah, that will be my last week here. I'll try to get to it --i really like the double leopards, & gygax! gives great praise to your DK skeelz. (i'm sorry i couldn't make yer party; i was hung over and in bed until three.)

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 3 May 2004 04:39 (twenty years ago) link

hahaha, the party started around 4.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 3 May 2004 12:47 (twenty years ago) link

Finally a reason to go to that steaming shitpile, Lit.

Awesome.

ddb, Monday, 3 May 2004 13:51 (twenty years ago) link

Russ, I liked the headphone SB experience at the Kitchen/Free 103 thing last week. But I listened to the wrong frequency for five minutes and thought you guys were doing the Tubes "She's a Beauty".

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Tuesday, 4 May 2004 02:28 (twenty years ago) link

Brian - thanks!

Just to clarify - the BunnyBrains playing next week is the BunnyBrains led by Bobby, not Dan.

Russ, Friday, 7 May 2004 19:32 (twenty years ago) link

a few more tomorrow: cause co-motion and the psychic ills at the mighty robot space in williamsburg (406 wythe) and the deadly snakes at siberia (40th st. btwn 8th & 9th aves).

new year, new spam:

Thursday, March 24 – 9 PM

Uzuhi (Japan)
Suns-Owl (Japan)
Marmalade (Japan)

Friday March 25 – 9 PM, $5

Cause Co-Motion (http://www.causecomotion.com)
One Long Lash (erica bricking (ex-drinking woman), tim barnes (silver jews, jim o'rourke, neil hagerty, etc.) duo)
The U-Bolts

You know Cause Co-Motion, New York’s most loved band of misanthropic rock sounds. The kids love them, you love them, come out and see them so you can say you saw them when.

Onelonglash is the new duo of husband-and-wife Erica Bricking and Tim Barnes. Discerning Louisville-o-philes know Erica from her stint in the legendary Drinking Woman, which also featured Tara Jane O’Neil (Rodan, Retsin, The Sonora Pine, Tara Jane O’Neil solo, etc.). Discerning indie-o-philes know Tim Barnes from his work behind the kit for Silver Jews, Jim O’Rourke, Neil Hagerty, Tower Recordings – and most recently with PG6 opening for SLINT. Also, he is quite the man about town in the improv scene, having played with damn near every one who’s anyone.

The U-Bolts are a brand-new band on the NY scene, nice and heavy, yet with supple guitar lines reminiscent of some bands that the Strokes don’t sound anything like.

JUST ADDED - Tuesday, March 29 – 9 PM, $5

Guilty Connector (Japan)
Kelly Churko
The Maestros
Sickness

GUILTY CONNECTOR: A hybrid human/noise-machine that creates noise-scapes of unfathomed depths. Banging hand-made noise generators aka "SHIBAKI Electronics" made of iron plates, he creates and liberates dazzling spectra of sounds, from ultra-fast extreme harsh barrages to meditative spacy sounds. Experience the roar of his live electronics with your own flesh.

Kelly Churko (MacIntosh G4, Kenaxis software) - Born in Moose Jaw, Canada, August 18th, 1977. Studied classical piano and traveled around Canada with the family band in childhood. Majored in jazz studies on guitar at Vancouver Community College 1994-1997. Currently based in Tokyo, Japan. Also a member of avant-jazz group Almost Transparent Blue and noise unit Hospital, both based in Vancouver, Canada. He has toured in Europe, Japan and the United States.

Sickness just played Siberia last week with Spencer Yeh/Pete Nolan, Hive Mind, the Seven Arts, Peter Kolovos and Jason Crumer – and he slayed. Don’t miss him again, dorks!

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 21:56 (seventeen years ago) link

holy shit!

i've met hazel dickens several times, and i have to say sheepishly that i'm astonished she's still alive. she was really old when i was a little kid.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 22:02 (seventeen years ago) link

Shows are sold out and the rumour is pending. I certainly HOPE we add more; I've really never seen a show sell out that far in advance.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 22:13 (seventeen years ago) link

if "bonny billy" just fucked off and went home the hazel dickens fans could probably fit into a teacup.

you know she and will oldham were both in matewan together.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 24 May 2006 22:17 (seventeen years ago) link

Ha, yeah; the press I got for it helpfully pointed out that this show "marks the first time the two have shared a bill since they both appeared in John Sayles’ 1987 film "Matewan"."

MP3 up on the page, btw.

Meant to post that here instead of on the other shows thread (I love The Occasion, but I don't know if I'd go so far as to call this show "best of the best):

Tonight, 7pm, Rocky's Bar, Brooklyn
(351 Kent Ave at South 5th)

The Occasion
The Suckers
The Friends Band
Damon McMahon
Zeke Healy
(not in that order)

The Occasion is supposed to be on somewhere around 10, and that's who I'm mainly going to see if I go.

There will also be some sort of BBQ-ing going on.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Friday, 26 May 2006 14:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Also, the Begushkin show at Brooklyn Fireproof tomorrow (see upthread).

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Friday, 26 May 2006 14:40 (seventeen years ago) link

My initial Summer planning with the Girlfriend resolves itself as such; not sure I'll see all of these, but I'm gonna try to do my best.
Anybody attending any of these who'd like to say hi is more than welcome to drop me a line. Likely adding and subtracting as days go on; suggestions r welcome.

For a sec I thought that was an upcoming 2015 list, and I thought, cool Sonny Rollins' health has improved and he's gonna play this summer. Oh well. Feel better Sonny.

I am sure there's plenty to do in 2015. I want the Dig Deeper old-school soul promoters in Brooklyn to bring shows down to my neck of the woods in DC, plus some of those Summerstage international gigs
