gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It looks like "Between the Buttons", the Rolling Stones.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

(That Hawks single was a highlight of a "50 new wave singles and 10 albums for £20" job lot I bought. The other was the beasties first single, I sold on for £30)

Hmmm.

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I can only see a guy in a Santa Claus hat playing a guitarron=must be an Os Mutantes bootleg.

J (Jay), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:48 (twenty-two years ago)

'That Hawks single was a highlight of a "50 new wave singles and 10 albums for £20" job lot I bought.' Good deal, mark - I just bought that single for 35 quid, and I thought I'd done well, having recently seen the same sell for 80 odd on ebay. My suspicion is that a Hawks band member may have emptied his shed recently, as there does seem to be more floating around than there ever has been.

xpost to J.: those must be some good drugs you're smokin'.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

what?

3xpost

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Unfortunately it's just my normal instability (you do realize I was kidding about the OS Mutantes part, right?).

J (Jay), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:55 (twenty-two years ago)

daz ad. Good Grief, I never knew. I knew they used to be the subterranean Hawks, and were various exDuranDuran bods (Steven Duffy, Kurwain?) off one of those (what a nice way to turn seventeen) various oddbods LPs.

I oddly enough knew the song when I played the single. (Why? was it a small hit, or was it covered by tintin?)

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:56 (twenty-two years ago)

gimme some o' those drugs, J.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 30 April 2004 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Stephen Duffy talks quite movingly about his early days here: http://www.stephenduffy.com/bio/80s.html

And old pictures of the five Hawks members (including Stevie Duffy, as he was known then) can be found here http://www.davekusworth.com/gallery.php

Looks like Ron Sexsmith was in the band, too?

Incidentally, that single is going for 50 or 60 pounds (didn't convert from dollars) on Gemm.com

I want to know where John Lennon got the Zip Drive.

earlnash, Friday, 30 April 2004 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude, that cover is so TOTALLY Stevie Nicks dancing next to Rick Nielsen playing a mandocello! Thus, I have absolutely no clue what it is! But apparently, he has an 8-Track of it as well.

J (Jay), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

You know, I'm actually starting to think that it's the back cover of a PETER, PAUL & MARY ALBUM!

J (Jay), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone's t'inking that maybe Philip K. Dick could have given John a copy of Kurt Nilsen's I ... see http://www.unsogno.net/177

Remarkably prescient, then.

The excellent Kenwood blog considers this very question today:

the 1966 Electronic Music album

Bob Six, Friday, 9 July 2010 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

Computer, enhace image!

strong boy burger (KMS), Friday, 9 July 2010 23:19 (fifteen years ago)

this is gonna drive me nuts - there's text right there at the middle of the picture but I can't make it out

les yeux sans aerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Saturday, 10 July 2010 14:24 (fifteen years ago)

It looks like he went forward in time two years (assuming this pic was taken circa 1967 judging by hairstyle and 'stache) and came back with the Stooges' first album. There is no way this picture is from 1969.

strong boy burger (KMS), Saturday, 10 July 2010 14:38 (fifteen years ago)

is it an album for sure?
it might be a picture

Zeno, Saturday, 10 July 2010 14:42 (fifteen years ago)

OTM.

http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a82/bobbysixer/john1.jpg

that is not a 12" album cover.

StanM, Saturday, 10 July 2010 15:12 (fifteen years ago)

do you mean it dreams it is a picture or it's excellent at being a picture

les yeux sans aerosmith (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Saturday, 10 July 2010 15:25 (fifteen years ago)

Maybe a magazine?

kkvgz, Saturday, 10 July 2010 15:31 (fifteen years ago)

kkvgz, Saturday, 10 July 2010 18:50 (fifteen years ago)

just ask the guy

Zeno, Saturday, 10 July 2010 19:05 (fifteen years ago)

Looks like a picture of railroad tracks with something casting a shadow on them.

Tuomas, Saturday, 10 July 2010 20:30 (fifteen years ago)

picture yourself...

PappaWheelie V, Saturday, 10 July 2010 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

total nerd in that picture.

scott seward, Saturday, 10 July 2010 20:51 (fifteen years ago)

shape on the left looks like George Harrison, maybe? middle shape looks like a naked woman (well, maybe that's just wishful thinking).

Euler, Saturday, 10 July 2010 21:02 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think anyone's naked. It looks like an African-American singing group of mixed genders. Like the Fifth Dimension or someone.

kkvgz, Saturday, 10 July 2010 21:06 (fifteen years ago)

...against a new york style fire escape maybe

Bob Six, Saturday, 10 July 2010 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

what do you guys make of this?

crop out the S in that picture and you've got the cover of my new album.

scott seward, Saturday, 10 July 2010 21:58 (fifteen years ago)

http://i29.tinypic.com/53jtye.png person left-hand in the image second from left looks like Lol Creme

piscesx, Saturday, 10 July 2010 22:04 (fifteen years ago)

to me it looks like a press photo of some girl group along the lines of Martha & the Vandellas, the Ronettes, the Supremes, the Crystals, or the Marvelettes.

http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/349/supremes001.jpg
(Supremes, dunno what year)

actually the more I look at StanM's 90° rotated shot, I think I see (left-right) a man in a light-colored suit facing left and a woman w/ bouffant haircut and dress facing the camera. so kingkong otm: it looks like an African-American singing group of mixed genders. the haircut isn't very Fifth Dimension-y, though.

I dunno if this question will ever gets answered to anyone's satisfaction, but it's it's an entertaining study of pareidolia at the very least.

Damn it! Well, anyway, cool stuff....

Darin, Monday, 12 July 2010 05:15 (fifteen years ago)

'electronic music' comp mostly worth it for the early Mimaroglu tracks. sole sound source of 'Bowery Bum' is one short recording of him plucking a rubber band, splicing it into a loop & tape-scrubbing it into tunes, sounds like early turntablism. it's a dry comp but I swoon on all this stuff anyway and hearing early pre-Moog Walter/Wendy pieces is fun if you love her later original music
