Anybody else feeling this like I'm feeling this?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 16 April 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

i felt the hype but then felt nothing.

myke boomnoise (myke boomnoise), Friday, 16 April 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny you mention hype, I saw them on a bill that was Ratatat-The Stills-Interpol. A big fan/hipster associated the with band tried to tell me they were "like, baroque break beats."

Trever Booth (xjzico), Saturday, 17 April 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

funny, this is like half-music. i mean, it doesn't sound like a dance track, it sounds like a remix of a rock song. i mean, it doesn't sound like hip-hop, it sounds like an instrumental. it doesn't sound like a rock song, it sounds like a bootleg missing the vocal. or a sampled hook or something.

dang, it's pretty though! and catchy.

vahid (vahid), Saturday, 17 April 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I will actually PAY people to not listen to them.

cs appleby (cs appleby), Saturday, 17 April 2004 04:09 (twenty-two years ago)

To me it feels like the soundtrack my life was looking for. It's hardly complete without an mp3 player. You want to be picking out groceries, crossing times square, looking for a bathroom with this in the background. It's instant gravitas, just add you.

Plus it sounds really kewl.

and on preview, how much?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 17 April 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, someone's been listening to every Eminem production of the past two years.

spittle (spittle), Saturday, 17 April 2004 05:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Gettin this stress that's been eatin me recently off of this chest
and I rest again peacefully (peacefully)..
but at least have the decency in you
to leave me alone, when you freaks see me out
in the streets when I'm eatin or feedin my daughter
to not come and speak to me (speak to me)..
I don't know you and no,
I don't owe you a mo-therfuck-in thing
I'm not Mr. N'Sync, I'm not what your friends think
I'm not Mr. Friendly, I can be a prick
if you tempt me my tank is on empty (is on empty)..

sam bloch, Saturday, 17 April 2004 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

dude's a guitarist for "the Dashboard" and Ben Kweller. Rock on!

brent_D, Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Am I the only one suspicious of the Ratatat threads on ILM? They all seem suspiciously street-team-y to me. Like "I heard about this interesting band, go here to hear an MP3" but everyone is falling for it.

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 18 April 2004 15:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, I posted this and I'm not a street team. I like ratatat. Thanks for playing.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 18 April 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I posted a thread about em a while back and aren't a stream teamer either, was just curious.

The album's fairly good, but is really lacking in variation. I'm not sure that I can tell any individual tracks apart.

Mil, Monday, 19 April 2004 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
they should really record something new.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Sunday, 28 August 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

Classic.

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 28 August 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Think I might put them on next in fact.

Sundar (sundar), Sunday, 28 August 2005 23:17 (twenty years ago)

who was it that said they were essentially Bill & Ted's rocktronica band?

donut gon' nut (donut), Sunday, 28 August 2005 23:26 (twenty years ago)

*hits BLINDING FLOOR LIGHT AGAIN*

I mean, here's some of the brilliance of the dark haired dude's in between song dialogue when I had to keep from shitting on see them live:

"huh huh... um... ahem... HEY, FUCKERS!... *jumps back laughing his ass off*"

Thanks.

donut gon' nut (donut), Sunday, 28 August 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

Who knew that Trans Am would have followers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 28 August 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

the ratatat/mouse on mars show i saw (last MoM tour, i guess) was one of the best shows i've ever seen.

i actually wasn't really impressed w/ ratatat at first but the way they kept on w/ the lightshow was what won me over ... yes it was sort of juvenile and annoying but i also thought it showed a lot of, uh, focus.

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 28 August 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

what am i trying to say ... aesthetic consistency?

it seemed less like conscious retro (trans am / fucking champs) and more like some sort of pop-arty / OP-arty move ... i was "dazzled".

vahid (vahid), Sunday, 28 August 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

Dazzle is best used conservatively, imho. Overdazzle = gluttony = one-trick mules.

donut gon' nut (donut), Monday, 29 August 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

Over a career, fine.. but over a thirty minute show? Jesus F.

donut gon' nut (donut), Monday, 29 August 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

Don't these guys have some sort of mixtape thing that combines their shtick with hip-hop that they sell at shows? I heard this but didn't end up buying anything when I saw them. Probably because I was disturbed by the two tall blondes playing the role of "audience members who are there to try to sleep with a band." I think one of the Ratatat dudes drank a good portion of a bottle of Jack Daniels, if memory serves right.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 29 August 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

the ratatat remixes mostly sucked, total mainstream hit songs that didn't need remixing in the first place and then ratatat totally sucked the energy out of them. but the ghostface remix is a keeper.
ghostface - run (ratatat remix)
doesnt outdo the original however.

alx, Monday, 29 August 2005 04:18 (twenty years ago)

I still like them, but I stopped listening to the album about a year ago now.
New disc time, indeed.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 29 August 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

the Ghostface remix doesn't even vaguely outdo the Pistol Pete one

I did like one or two others that people blogged though. Missy and...?

kit brash (kit brash), Monday, 29 August 2005 07:16 (twenty years ago)

That Pistol Pete remix of Ghostface is tops though! As is the Ghostface vs Baby Huey - Run (Omega One remix.) I like the Ratatat mix tape too. And their album. I never heard any hype for them in the UK and managed to get a copy of their lp for a quid so maybe that helped.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Monday, 29 August 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

What kind of light show did they use when you guys saw them?! All I remember is their name in lights, nothing super-remarkable or blinding or anything. The album sounds different than the live sound did though (I like both). Pitchfork described it well: http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/r/ratatat/ratatat.shtml

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 29 August 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Every 30 seconds, the less rock face blond guy would hit this floor light during the show that was a highly bright fluorescent light that's akin to stadium shows... which is fun the first couple of times, but they used it several times.. every song. I might have had a slightly more positive reaction to their live show had they just left that light alone.

donut gon' nut (donut), Monday, 29 August 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

ten months pass...
Some of the new album is around and I like. But I'm reserving judgement. Also, why does everyone hate the dude for being in emo bands?

max (maxreax), Sunday, 16 July 2006 00:23 (nineteen years ago)

You answered your own question.

But the original stuff was nice, though ,I heard it was dull in a live situation.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Sunday, 16 July 2006 00:38 (nineteen years ago)

three weeks pass...
Finally, new disc! Just cracking the seal, but enjoying what's there.
Not much growth, but plenty of the same old stew, still warm.
Wildcat is fun!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 7 August 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

As glad as I am to hear them branch out, "Tropicana" doesn't really do it for me. Just sort of mediocre neo-psychedelia.

max (maxreax), Monday, 7 August 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

worst band

chaki (chaki), Monday, 7 August 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

This new one, it seems like ratatat took cue from the shows they played, or at least the ones I saw.
One of them, the crowd was a really dance-y group. There was so much energy that ratatat didn't want to lost that momentum, so they played "Seventeen Years" and "El Pico" twice because, you know, the rest of the tracks don't have the kick of those first three.
So it sounds like they were content with their first album, but they just rewrote it to have a little more punch so they don't have to double up on tracks again at shows.

so yeah, I'm not sure how long this will last on rotation--it's fun, but I have sort of had my fill of their sound--but I know they'll be a great live show again.

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 01:23 (nineteen years ago)

they played 2 songs twice because people cant dance to their other stuff? sheesh.

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 01:30 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, basically they didn't seem to expect that the crowd would want an encore, so I think they had ended with el pico, and when the crowd was still cheering, they were kind of, 'okay..' and did 17 and el pico again.

It was kind of strange, but everyone had still had fun, half of us were onstage dancing with them.

mox twelve (Mox twleve), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 01:39 (nineteen years ago)

chaki y u brake heart all time?

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 01:40 (nineteen years ago)

sorry dood

chaki (chaki), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 01:54 (nineteen years ago)

no worries, my good friend.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 01:57 (nineteen years ago)

did i miss a rororomance here?

dottie nuttie dach nach dtnt hhhhhhhh (donut), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

and when the crowd was still cheering, they were kind of, 'okay..' and did 17 and el pico again.

last band i saw do this was EMF

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

bromance??

anyway i am still down w/ this band.

where do i hear the new one online?

JABBA JABBA!! NIB NIB!! (vahid), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 04:43 (nineteen years ago)

In secret places.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 04:48 (nineteen years ago)

you could piece most all of it together through hype machine.

it's not a lot different from the last but i don't mind.

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 04:54 (nineteen years ago)

you could piece most all of it together through "distorted guitar" setting on a yamaha djx, a rudimentary understanding of the blues scale, and negative imagination.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 05:05 (nineteen years ago)

to be fair, that's in reference the the 1st album. still havent heard the new one but i feel no need to.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 05:06 (nineteen years ago)

yeah probably not

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 05:30 (nineteen years ago)

Listening again to my old MP3 of "Seventeen Years" and trying to remember why I never got around to buying their record. The genius of it is that at first you're like "Oh man, this is great, it totally sounds like Megaman music but with big rock guitars and beats" and then you realize that the reason Megaman music sounds that way is that the people making the music for those games all wanted to be in big rock (esp. metal) bands but all they had to work with was Nintendo sound chips. Ratatat (and any ilk they may have) seem to instinctively understand this lineage....

xpost How totally weird, I was just rambling about the Yamaha DJX over on the recent synthesizer thread...!! And was trying to use the distortion guitar instrument on it earlier today (fruitlessly, I might add...maybe I need more knowledge of the blues scale....)

Doctor Casino (Doctor Casino), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 05:59 (nineteen years ago)

i'll be the first to admit that DJX's rule (I had one for years but lost it in katrina), but the distorted guitar setting is pretty laughable. i'd probably like ratatat if they used the goblins, robot lead, and come on voices more.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Tuesday, 8 August 2006 06:08 (nineteen years ago)

CAAAHM ONNNN! Get up! Yyyyyyyyyyeah.

The best/worst is that anybody that comes over and turns on the keyboard is plunged into the default mode where all these voices and the exceedingly generic techno track activate whenever you push anything.

Distorted guitar doesn't sound much like distorted guitar, but it sounds like something good. I've had a lot of fun running it through the various DSP settings. Somehow the "Distortion - Hard" filter doesn't seem to add or subtract anything.

Never have found much use for Goblins anywhere, but Robot is great. It's all about MC Line and Fragile for me.
