what about Derek B?

scottjames23 (worrysome-man), Monday, 12 April 2004 16:48 (twenty years ago) link

Kanye's a twit, but I still like his music.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 12 April 2004 16:50 (twenty years ago) link

This cements the sneaking suspicion I've had that Kanye is a fucking idiot.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 12 April 2004 16:50 (twenty years ago) link

(haha xpost)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 12 April 2004 16:50 (twenty years ago) link

Incidently I think his album is wonderful.

djdee2005, Monday, 12 April 2004 16:51 (twenty years ago) link

he should make his return on a jesus walks remix.

ww, Monday, 12 April 2004 16:56 (twenty years ago) link

OTM!

djdee2005, Monday, 12 April 2004 16:57 (twenty years ago) link

i find this news somehow maked me happy.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 12 April 2004 16:58 (twenty years ago) link

It's really too bad he ruined "All Falls Down" with his rapping.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Monday, 12 April 2004 17:00 (twenty years ago) link

I think "New Workout Plan" is one of the best songs on the album, and "All Falls Down" one of the worst, yet critics seem to feel exactly OPPOSITE of how I do.

"New Workout Plan" is definitely the most CHICAGO sounding track w/ its house-like beat.

djdee2005, Monday, 12 April 2004 17:07 (twenty years ago) link

That can't be true. Painful if it is. But I've heard Kanye interviewed saying that he copped his style from Ghostface Killah. That's a little better than Mase.

Gregory T (tubesocks), Monday, 12 April 2004 17:38 (twenty years ago) link

Does anyone feel like actually reading RS to confirm? Didn't think so.

The Huckle-Buck (Horace Mann), Monday, 12 April 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago) link

he mentions mase in thru the wire...

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 12 April 2004 17:40 (twenty years ago) link

Isn't he talking about Mace, the stuff you spray on muggers? Or that cops spray on you, or whatever?

I am dubious that someone as low profile (and who releases so few records) as Mase could be his favorite, but they do have some things in common--they both have a kind of laziness to their flow and their enunciation. And they both need Jesus like Kathy Lee need Regis.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Monday, 12 April 2004 17:47 (twenty years ago) link

Mase on the list + Tupac not on the list = Kanye is on drugs

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Monday, 12 April 2004 17:51 (twenty years ago) link

truth serum?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 12 April 2004 17:56 (twenty years ago) link

I like how it makes kanye even more idiosyncratic, which I think is his best feature. But the rest of the list is by the numbers greatest mc stuff.
I really liked Mase when he first came out with puffy.

Magic City (ano ano), Monday, 12 April 2004 17:56 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah he should've totally made the same list that everybody makes that includes Tupac and Chuck D and Rakim, and I'll tell ya what we here at ILM surely wouldn't have complained then and surely wouldn't have jokingly posted a picture of Ma$e, scouts honor!

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 12 April 2004 17:59 (twenty years ago) link

Does anyone feel like actually reading RS to confirm?

I've already read the issue. It's true. Also, there's a really cool piece about a doctor who researches children's near-death experiences.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 12 April 2004 18:00 (twenty years ago) link

Kanye would be so much better if he sounded anyhting like Ma$e

C0L1N B3CK3TT (Colin Beckett), Monday, 12 April 2004 18:05 (twenty years ago) link

he mentioned ma$e twice now in song: "if you could feel how my face felt, you would know how ma$e felt" and "they used to tell me 'toughen up, put some bass in your voice'/ they used to tell me 'lighten up, put some ma$r in your voice"

m., Monday, 12 April 2004 18:07 (twenty years ago) link

1. ILM not trusting me!? I'm shocked and appalled. Yes of course this is actually in rolling stone.

2. Tupac not being in a top five (or top twenty for that matter) = not that hard to believe.

3. Kanye sounds nothing like Ghostface....Kanye is all about clever one-liners and witty lyricisms, Ghostface is a lot more impressionistic and is concerned often w/ the sound of words and painting pictures w/ words while his voice emphatically illustrates tension w/in the scenario he presents.

4.I like how it makes kanye even more idiosyncratic, which I think is his best feature. - OTM

djdee2005, Monday, 12 April 2004 18:10 (twenty years ago) link

Frankly I'm more surprised by him putting Eminem above Jay-Z.

djdee2005, Monday, 12 April 2004 18:14 (twenty years ago) link

Kanye mentions Mase in a ton of songs, my favorite being "Kanye, the best dressed nigga next to fags, and I'm the best version of Mase next to Fab". also "they told me toughen up, put some bass in your voice, they told me soften up, put some Mase in your voice".

Al (sitcom), Monday, 12 April 2004 18:50 (twenty years ago) link

wait, the line is "If you could feel how my face felt, you would know how MACE felt", isn't it?

Does Ma$e's face really hurt or something? Because otherwise I think he is talking about mace, not Mase.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Monday, 12 April 2004 19:25 (twenty years ago) link

I love Kanye more by the minute.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Monday, 12 April 2004 19:26 (twenty years ago) link

c'mon al.

m., Monday, 12 April 2004 19:31 (twenty years ago) link

c'mon what?

Al (sitcom), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:21 (twenty years ago) link

also I think the line is "you would know how Mase felt", because it's followed by the words "thank god", i.e. a reference to Mase's religious awakening.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:22 (twenty years ago) link

Ok, so how did Mase feel? Does his face really hurt? Does he have a toothache? Did someone throw acid on his face? That would really hurt, I bet.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:25 (twenty years ago) link

Has anyone seen the video for "All Falls Down"? It's pretty excellent. They actually sensor a Kanye West lyric though. Maybe this is on another post, but it turns my stomach. The lyric now goes "____ dealer buys Jordans / _________ buys crack / and a _____ man gets paid off of all of that"

it's the crux of the song and it's edited out. A said comment on the state of affairs over here.

from:
http://puckalbright.blogdrive.com/

Last week, I noticed that some 'editor' at BET had made the decision
to cut some of the words out of Kanye West's song "All Falls Down"
for his video. One such editorial cut was very interesting to me.
In the lyric "drug dealer buys Jordans, / crackhead buys crack / and
a white man gets paid / off of all of that," BET chose to delete the
words "drug," "crackhead" and "white." Do you also find that choice
problematic? Particularly coming from a station that purports to
serve a Black viewership?

Is there something wrong with saying the word "white" now?
Certainly, Kanye West knew precisely what he meant by that lyric, and
so do his fans. So who misunderstood at BET? BET should be looping
Kanye West (and other positive influences) twenty-four hours a day,
but instead they are censoring them. How ironic!

I mean, who made that editorial decision?... ?

david day (winslow), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:50 (twenty years ago) link

they edit the white man line on MTV, too. weird.

Al (sitcom), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:57 (twenty years ago) link

haha, I think it's hilarious that they censored the crack in "crack-head," but left the word "crack" in the same line.

Scott CE (Scott CE), Monday, 12 April 2004 20:58 (twenty years ago) link

c'mon al it's like you don't even *see* me anymore. like what i say doesn't even matter to you. what do you think this is doing to the kids?

btw ma$e has retired from his ilm appearances

Maybe Kanye was kidding when he said it. Oh, please, please,
pretty please.

oh wtf. If he said FAVORITE rapper I don't know what the big deal is. Kanye sounds like amiable goofballs would appeal to him.

mhmm is creeping me out.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 01:07 (twenty years ago) link

About the Ghostface/Kanye reference. I see the production resemblance, but the two have very different delivery. Anways this is Kanye speaking from SOHH.com : "Really we were making all those beats for Ghostface. Me and Just love Ghostface so much, that's Hip-Hop's (Roc-a-fella executive) favorite rapper and one of my favorite rappers, so we were trying to make all these beats for Ghostface but just so happens we're at Roc-a-fella and Jay heard them and rapped on them. We were making all these beats for Ghostface because we get so inspired by his albums. He was the only dude coming out with something worthwhile with Supreme Clientele. I feel like I got my whole style from Ghostface. Listen to what I'm saying, I need that in print, I feel like I got my whole style from Ghostface. My whole mentality about Hip-hop. He really took it to the next level."

He also goes on to reinforce this Ma$e obsession when asked who his favorite MC is right now? "I'm my favorite rapper now. Nah, Eminem might be my favorite. And 50. I love 50 and Jay. But Beanie, Cam, Jadakiss, Snoop Dogg is one of my favorites of all time. Ma$e is one of my favorite rappers of all time. Common."

This link here is the reference to the article from SOHH.com about Kanye

mase sucks. Thank you for listening.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 05:20 (twenty years ago) link

(al, i was just referring to the instance of you re-quoting the kanye lines that i'd transcribed not two posts previous, which i took to mean you hadn't read my contribution. [though perhaps you had and were merely restating your love for those particular lyrics]. now that ain't creepy, is it sugarlegs?)

m., Tuesday, 13 April 2004 08:33 (twenty years ago) link

no it's true that the mentality is similar to ghostface, ghost is after all like the last remaining real touchstone to trueschool for many, the last one that's still any good anyway. lookit that delfonics track for instance

wow there's a roc exec called HIP HOP!!!

prima fassy (mwah), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 08:40 (twenty years ago) link

Didn't Kanye's productions first appear on Ma$e's solo album? He had his first break thanks to Ma$e, no wonder he likes the man so much.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 09:05 (twenty years ago) link

Kanye and Just Blaze both worked on the Harlem World album (as in HW the group, not HW the Mase solo album).

(my bad, mhmm, honest mistake)

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 13 April 2004 13:15 (twenty years ago) link

i noticed today in the thru the wire video at the chaining ceremony thing kanye gets his roc chain and says "i'm the newest member of the roc-a-fella team and i'ma make dame and hov mad more cream." on take waht's yours mase says "i'm the newest member of the bad boy team and i'ma bring this nigga puff mad more cream."

ww, Sunday, 18 April 2004 04:48 (twenty years ago) link

That is sick and wrong.

However, I heard Mase is coming out of retirement, and is going to be on Nelly's label. Read it in a magazine somewhere.
