Anyone planning on requesting anything?

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 19 March 2004 12:51 (5 years ago) Permalink

... that they split up?

(sorry, I can resist everything but a cheap dig)

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 19 March 2004 12:52 (5 years ago) Permalink

jesus, that needs recording

chris (chris), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:00 (5 years ago) Permalink

it should be archived on the wfmu website

!!!! (amateurist), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:03 (5 years ago) Permalink

No, it won't be -- Yo La Tengo do this every year, and they always request that it not be archived.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:37 (5 years ago) Permalink

But you can probably get a copy from Ken at sunsquashed.com, if you have something to trade.

I'ma gwon attempt to tape it this year...

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 19 March 2004 13:45 (5 years ago) Permalink

I've always wanted them to do the MST3K theme song. Kraftwerk's "Computer World" also comes to mind.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 19 March 2004 14:12 (5 years ago) Permalink

What y'all really should do is pledge at least $60 during Gaylord Fields' show (Saturday 1800-2000 EST) and you'll get a cd of Yo La Tengo's personal slection of the last seven years of the band's Marathon appearances. If you listen to WFMU on line, it's the least you could do.

I hope that somebody recorded this from the stream - I was busy all day and didn't get a chance to hear it as it happened.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 22 March 2004 14:23 (5 years ago) Permalink

Ok, how did they do "Monk Time"? "Alright my names Ira, lets go its beat time its hot time its Yo La Tengo (?) time!" "We don't like the WMDs!" etc.

And what would be the James Bond/Pussy Galore analogue?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Monday, 22 March 2004 15:02 (5 years ago) Permalink

I really want to hear this, in particular - walk away renee, london calling and hey ya

chris (chris), Monday, 22 March 2004 15:13 (5 years ago) Permalink

I want to hear "Close To Me" - I hope that Georgia sang it!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 22 March 2004 15:14 (5 years ago) Permalink

James sang it. Georgia would have done it better, yer right.

I have it taped, I think. I haven't gotten a chance to play it back yet to see if it came out. I hope to get it into wav files this week. I can post mp3s of the most entertaining bits. (or maybe the whole thing, if I can find the space..)

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 22 March 2004 15:34 (5 years ago) Permalink

they didn't actually play "walk away renee." the last song they did, after announcing "a lot of requests tonight for the velvet underground, a lot of requests for neil young, a lot of requests for billy joel," was just them going round and round for about eight minutes on the "we didn't start the fire" chords while shouting out the names of requests that they hadn't been able to get to. occcasionally they'd also chant a verse worth of said song's lyrics, to no particular tune. "walk away renee" was one of those, lyrics intoned by ira. it was all quite amusing. best moment of this was georgia calling out, "his name is alive ... who knows any songs by them?!"

highlights of the set for me were "next big thing" and the grand funk song. they peaked early.

p.s. i requested billy joel.

you'll get a cd of Yo La Tengo's personal slection of the last seven years of the band's Marathon appearances.

After two years spent getting clearances, Yo La Tengo Is Murdering the Classics has finally escaped. Got mine in the mail yesterday (as you will if you pledged for it in 2004); otherwise you can order it from YLT:

http://www.yolatengo.com/forsale/

I've only played the first ten tracks, which include my tough but fair 2000 request of the Nightmares' "Baseball Altamont." It's likely the only album you'll ever own that follows "Meet the Mets" with X-Ray Spex.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 16:35 (3 years ago) Permalink

In 1998, during the YLT WFMU thing, I called in and requested Shake Some Action. They played one of the best versions of it I've ever heard. Is that on the compilation? I can't find a track listing.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 16:42 (3 years ago) Permalink

Morbius, what years does the comp cover? I have the last 5-6 years I think -

How many tracks? (care to list them?) How many minutes?

dave vire think (dave225.3), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 16:46 (3 years ago) Permalink

the comp is all 2003 and earlier. the liner notes suggest they may one day do one to catch up with more recent broadcasts.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 16:49 (3 years ago) Permalink

I remember that "Shake Some Action"! I don't think it's on there tho. There are about 30 tracks plus an 8-song medley; Ira's back-cover notes are about why there's no track listing (there's one inside).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 16:56 (3 years ago) Permalink

I remember that "Shake Some Action"! I don't think it's on there tho.

They did a raveup at the end with Ira going "You've got to shake some action down on me" It was great.

I saw Ira Kaplan at Maxwells a couple years later and asked if he remembered playing it. I was pleased that he did. He said that lots of bands have versions of that song worked out.

It sounds really good I think, for those of you who tape these every year. They must have properly mastered the tracks and such.

Georgia sez they are moving fast, so I wouldn't wait too long to buy yours from their site. Disappointed the kids singing Outkast didn't make it.

again from Ira:

Do you have a computer? If not, are you in listening range of 91.1 FM in Jersey City, New Jersey or 90.1 FM in the Hudson Valley of New York State? If you can answer yes to either of these questions, then you are in luck or out of luck, depending on how you define the term. On Tuesday, November 27, from 11 pm-2 am, Eastern Standard Time, I will be on the air, in theair slot usually occupied by Small Change, playing records and chatting about this and that. You can listen live either on your radio or by going to wfmu.org.

Yo La Tengo comes back to murder more classics! This Sunday, March 2, from 5-8pm, Gaylord Fields and Bob Brainen mark the halfway point of the WFMU fundraising Marathon by once again enlisting Yo La Tengo to take your calls, pledges and most importantly cover song requests, which will then be brought to life over the air!

The band's long history with the WFMU Marathon has proven that Yo La Tengo is unstoppable, and tonight's show is a special longer 3-hour broadcast just in case that extended version of "Hocus Pocus" comes up. Gaylord co-hosts the rest of Bob's show from 8-9pm after the band packs up as well.

OK, I got my request ready.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Sunday, 2 March 2008 18:16 (1 year ago) Permalink

I sure hope they play it soon. (Fingerz crossed)

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 3 March 2008 00:52 (1 year ago) Permalink

Oh no. I hope it's not absorbed into this "Chantilly Lace" uber-medley.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 3 March 2008 00:55 (1 year ago) Permalink

Mine got in the medley... I think.

How many other songs are about getting pneumonia when you fall in love though.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 3 March 2008 01:00 (1 year ago) Permalink

Why'n't you just split away?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 3 March 2008 02:08 (1 year ago) Permalink

Sorry, just thinking about how Lou Reed would have played my request.
