Well, um, they gave Probot a good review and have a page of Dave Grohl's face

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 February 2004 03:22 (twenty years ago) link

Above his face it says

[RATED]
FILTERING THE COBAINS FROM THE STAPPS EVERY WEEK...

I'm sure that's new.

Aja (aja), Saturday, 21 February 2004 03:23 (twenty years ago) link

What the hell was going on in 1985 with Brian Adams and Kate Bush at the top of the list?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 21 February 2004 03:23 (twenty years ago) link

And in 1984, that noted metal luminary Prince at #2 in the singles list.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 21 February 2004 03:26 (twenty years ago) link

Unless the year end awards were voted for by rock journalists, rather than journalists voting on rock albums (if that makes sense)

I like two of their of 100 best albums of all time, and they're both Black Sabbath. I'm not sure how to feel about that.

Stupid (Stupid), Saturday, 21 February 2004 03:55 (twenty years ago) link

Most pivotal album? Van Halen I ?

Van Halen 1 wouldn't have existed without Montrose.

George Smith, Saturday, 21 February 2004 04:12 (twenty years ago) link

Neither would 5150!

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 21 February 2004 04:21 (twenty years ago) link

I did ask if Van Halen I was most pivotal album in the last 25 years. Montrose would've been before '78?
If its not Van Halen I, then what is?

My browser protects me by crashing every time I open that page.

Kerrang! was the Creem of the UK. One major change is that today's staff don't decorate themselves with long mangy beards, thick glasses, bald skulls, and denim jacket-jeans combo. That magazine made heavy metal seem fun.

I think there's at least a page of Pat Benatar in Kerrang #1.

'Rock' has gone full circle from Scorpions to The Darkness. maybe the Darkness will have their "Winds Of Change" soon.

Metal has seen the biggest changes. NWOBHM, Thrash, Death,Black Metal,Grind,Industrial to name a few.

Now Kerrang mainly covers 'Nu-Metal', 'punk' 'emo' and 'Stoner'. All very non metal genres. When was the last time Kerrang regularly covered 'Metal'?
Buy Terrorizer i you want true metal.

The Dark One, Saturday, 21 February 2004 14:56 (twenty years ago) link

Depends on whether you have a Terrorizer readers blind view of metal or if you have a Chuck Eddy view...

Rob S.: ha!

I posted this question in the Opeth thread, but this may be a better place for it. If a high school kid today told me he listens to metal, what bands does he listen to? When I was in high school Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, and the usual t-shirts abounded, but are there any unanimous adolescent metalhead faves these days?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Saturday, 21 February 2004 16:06 (twenty years ago) link

Based on the people at their show last summer of that age with new shirts, Maiden.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 21 February 2004 16:37 (twenty years ago) link

A few years ago it was Cradle Of Filth where I live, but they seem to be treated as a bit of a joke band. Before that it was Sepultura and Fear Factory. These days its hard to say. But one thing will never change...you still get those who say only black/extreme metal is true metal. Something Mr Eddy will disagree with.

Rock Bastard, Saturday, 21 February 2004 16:40 (twenty years ago) link

Thinking about it I probably see more Slayer,Pantera and Machine Head tshirts than anything else other than Korn/Slipknot nu metal stuff.

Kerrang! was the Creem of the UK.

Then it should have stopped paying its writers and gone out of business about a year or so after.

And then had its name taken by some piece of rubbish known for its unreadable design.

And then promise a comeback "soon" every year or so from a redoubt on the wweb.

George Smith, Saturday, 21 February 2004 22:18 (twenty years ago) link

ten years pass...

I want to put a fictionalised version of Kerrang! in a thing I'm writing and am having trouble coming up with a suitably punchy name for it. Any suggestions?

that has to be the Astoria one right? Kerrap rarely venture outside the capital if they can help it and it was an absolute belter too.

I tried to find a list on the Kerrap!... er, sorry, Kerrang! website, but there wasn't one in sight. The TV channel isn't even mentioned on the message board...

I haven’t bought Kerrap magazine for a while but on the studio diary it says that there may be a feature on Therapy? in the January 25th issue. Was it in this issue? If so was it any good? If not does anyone know when T? might be covered in the future?
So many questions, so few answers!
