Wow, I can't believe this show is still on the air. It's been so long since I last bothered tuning in.

This looks good though. Brent Bambury at his best!

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 7 February 2004 06:41 (6 years ago) Permalink

this makes me wish I was still a slacker. Getting up for work at 5.30am has put the kabosh on my Brave New Waves listening. Does look great tho.

That's quite a list. But is the Allen Ginsberg inter view a seance?

i hope so! also interesting will be the John Cage and Sun Ra channelings. in truth, it's the show's 20th anniversary so they're reairing old interviews with old hosts. exciting for canadian kids who only had these 4 hours a night to look forward to in their otherwise bleak existences. (me included.)

Looks like a plunder through the vaults, which is a good thing, because more Brent = more fun. I used to love this show but I just rarely stay up late enough to fully enjoy it anymore (damn the working life!). The time I have listened to it since Patti Schmidt took over, I've enjoyed it but it hasn't had the same level of...discovery, I guess. It doesn't seem so cutting edge. Then again, maybe that's just because I've become more familiar with all of this stuff since then.

It's been funny seeing Brent make the transition to mainstream tv and radio host. I actually enjoy his new shows, Go and Groove Shinny quite a bit, because it gives him a chance to subvert a more mainstream audience and show off his wicked sense of humour. I'm not so sure I like the Go theme song though. Oh well.

the february 23rd Oswald session contains his 1996 revision of 'plexure', which is substantially different (and better, I think). I seldom listen to the first version anymore.

I used to like her for the first hour or so of the show. Basically, up to the point where she'd break out the electronic stuff.

Was anyone else here a regular Nightlines listener? Best show ever.

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 7 February 2004 22:24 (6 years ago) Permalink

I was a huge fan of Nightlines, first getting into it around 1991. David Wisdom was the greatest host ever. The hilarious skill-testing questions, Gilbert from Transcona, Maurice Pooby and the Poobescents, the spotlight feature album feature (or whatever he called it), those great hours of power that people sent in...man, I miss that show.

Brave New Waves has gotten a bit duller in recent years...Patti Schmidt has always been a good host, but Brent Bambury was terrific, especially his interviews. His conversation with a surprisingly eloquent John Lydon is the one I remember most vividly.

abegrand, Saturday, 7 February 2004 23:19 (6 years ago) Permalink

Spent many sleepless nights listening to Brave New Waves. Probably haven't tuned in since '97 or so? This has more to do with lifestyle than anything else.

Andy K (Andy K), Saturday, 7 February 2004 23:45 (6 years ago) Permalink

I think Nightlines taught me that, whoah, there was good music before 1977, too.

David Wisdom has his own show now called Pearls of Wisdom which, maybe you know isn't all that great. Surprisingly conservative, actually, especially when you consider that all the stuff he plays come from his "own personal collection." Still, he sounds like he's enjoying himself more than he did when he was forced to co-host and water himself down for that lousy Radio Sonic crowd.

may pang (maypang), Saturday, 7 February 2004 23:47 (6 years ago) Permalink

His conversation with a surprisingly eloquent John Lydon is the one I remember most vividly.

All I remember aboot that interview was a brief detour into discussing whether the sound that had just come from somebody's body was a belch or a fart.

I hated Brent Bambury, and was so happy when Patti Schmidt took over, and stopped listening aboot 2 years into her run. I am glad, though, to see David Wisdom getting some love. I remember listening to his show when it aired after that terrible show with Lenora Cornfeld that CBC always promoted so much as their gateway into younger audiences, and being kinda upset he was so neglected.

BNW is a phenomenal show, it really is. It's exposed me to some of the best improv and electronic music I've heard. My schedule allows me to listen to it fairly frequently. My only problem is that I'm more or less the opposite of may pang in that I don't care so much for the indie rock that often sucks up the first part of the show. If I tune in to that stuff, I'm more likely to put on a CD or something. The last two hours are usually amazing though. And, hey, it sometimes gets me to re-evaluate things. I was actually enjoying Pavement and Stephen Malkmus a couple nights ago!

You were probably a big fan of Two New Hours. Is that still on the air?

I shouldn't say that I entirely disliked the avant-garde stuff that got played (and probably still gets played) on BNW. I often re-listened to a lot of it if I somehow managed to get it onto tape. Also, it was usually a good way to lull me to sleep at 3AM when I had to get up early the next morning and maybe it, uh, opened my younger, more impressionable mind up a little bit more, too. I never went out and bought any of it though.

Nightlines and Brave New Waves were the shows to exposed me to so much new music and so many wonderful bands that I would have never have gotten a chance to hear otherwise. It's nice to know that Brave New Waves is still around even if I'm never up late enough to listen to it anymore.

I haven't listened to BNW in years, but I remember listening a lot during my first few years of university. I missed many an early class thanks to Patti. In those days CFNY was still an excellent source for new music, but I think I have BNW to thank for exposing me to so much good music.

Ahhh. I'm in US but Canadian so I won't blow the photo quiz. He was truly an excellent talent and sorely missed.

Brave New Waves memories ... yeah, I concur .. helped open up my eyes/ears as a teenager. Was bored with the "rock" of the typical stations and BNW provided an ... well, an alternative, in the truest sense.

Nightlines I hold even more fondly in my heart, probably because I heard more if it as it aired on the weekends (the 11-2/5am... bnw weeknight slot was tough for a kid waking up at 6am to get to school). Brent was an excellent and intelligent host. Originator Augusta LaPaix also has a great voice (sometimes seems CBC requires a great radio host to get a show ... )

Speaking of Nightlines memories, how about Uni Despair?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:21 (6 years ago) Permalink

wow .. can't believe Uni Despair is in someone else's memory (even if it is only one person - Sean!)

If I remember right, D.Wisdom created a contest of either just short clips of songs, or the beginnings of songs (I think that was it)...
there were a huge number 100+ and some of the clips were really short (I believe a dylan tune was in there with just one drumshot)

So Mr. Uni Despair, a partriotic American entered and wrote confidently that he would win and widely disparaged Canada + Canadians as a whole ...
general chaos ensued.

Then there was a followup contest -- and ppl grouped up, simply to beat "Uni" and I think they did, but he came in 2 or 3rd? ...

anyway around the same there was also a theme song contest, some of which played heavily on this controversy .l.. I dunno -- we're talking about 15 years ago!!

Matt Sab (Matt Sab), Monday, 9 February 2004 00:31 (6 years ago) Permalink

Yeah, Uni won the first contest with all of the clips and won the coveted Nightlines t-shirt, and then proceeded to taunt all of the Canadian listeners for living in a country without indoor plumbing. (In other words he treated Canadian listeners in much the same way Ned treats Canadian ILXors.) Then when the indignant response flowed back into ye olde Nightlines headquarters, David "sent" someone to retrieve the shirt Uni won, but not before Uni filled it full of bulletholes. The shirt was then offered up as a prize for the Song For Uni contest, which somehow I won. (I don't know where the shirt is but I think I still have a small envelope with the slugs from the handgun used to put the bulletholes in the shirt.)

The seconds clips contest came about a year later and there was a concerted effort to keep Uni out of the #1 spot. I can't remember who won it. Maybe Stevie Ray Brown? (Stevie, if you're out there, REPRAZENT.)

Two New Hours is still on, yes. I'm listening to it right now in fact. Earlier they played a great piece by a doctoral student named Vincent Po (?) called "Dragon Realms". I really love the two Larry Lake compositions I know, both of which I actually listened to today: "Psalm" and "Three Bagatelles". They're gorgeous, the way they integrate droning and rippling washes of cheesy 80s synth sounds with a lyrical oboe melody in the first case and intricate gamelan rhythms in the second.

I had the great pleasure of meeting David Wisdom a few years ago when his then-current show Realtime was in town for a remote broadcast. I told him I really loved Nightlines and he said "ahhh Nightlines - what a great show" as if he were more a fan than the erstwhile host.

As for BNW, it was a sad day when Brent left. He had the greatest voice in radio. I would listen just to hear him talk. I like Patti, sure, but I loved Brent.

These shows introduced me to a lot of great music. We didn't get CBC Stereo where I spent my formative years (outport Newfoundland), but when CBC television would go off the air at night they would broadcast the radio feed over the test pattern. Sometimes this lasted for only a few minutes, or sometimes all night. So I would sit in front of the television with the stupid test pattern listening to these shows on the weekends and jotting down band names into the wee hours of the morning....ahhh, good times.

Where I lived, the only way I could get CBC fm was through cable, and I had a system where I hooked up the cable fm feed through the vcr. I'd then videotape BNW and Nightlines, and the next day I'd sift through the shows, making audio tapes of all the best stuff. Did that for years...it gave me a real indie rock education.

abegrand, Monday, 9 February 2004 05:32 (6 years ago) Permalink

I lived out East in a remote area for a number of years as well, pretty far from the nearest radio tower which meant I had to put up with a lot of hissy broadcasts. It was always a big dillema deciding whether to tape the shows in mono or stereo. Mono meant I could get a clearer FM signal but obviously there was some music that demanded to be heard in true stereo even with the extra static that came with it.

I really miss those nights spent with after hours cbc radio. This was before mp3s and Napster and whatever else came around, making just about any song/album accessable to whomever, whenever. In retrospect, it was nice to have to "work" for your music a little bit more than you do today.

I think I'll end this now lest this turns into one of those "kids these days have it easy" rants.

may pang (maypang), Monday, 9 February 2004 05:57 (6 years ago) Permalink

CBC has not made any definitive statements about it that I know of.

Here's the form letter that was sent to people writing in expressing their concern:

Dear so-and-so

We at CBC Radio recognise our important role in developing Canadian
talent. It is a mandate that I take very seriously and support
whole-heartedly. Please be assured that CBC Radio is not altering its
responsibility for promoting and showcasing new and up-and-coming
Canadian talent.

CBC Radio has an ongoing commitment to younger audiences and to
emerging Canadian musicians, with a focus on Canada's independent music
scene. In fact, CBC is looking for new ways to increase the exposure we
give to new artists. There is currently an application before the CRTC
to launch a new service on satellite radio; we are exploring
opportunities to augment our commitment to independent artists on
existing platforms and we are constantly looking at alternative
strategies to expand our promotion of Canadian musicians. Until such
time as new opportunities are identified, Brave New Waves will
continue.

If you'd like to know more about the changes and new opportunities for
Radio 3, you may visit the following links to our website:

http://www.cbcradio3.com/changes.cfm

http://www.cbcradio3.com/faq.cfm

Translation: if the CRTC grants CBC radio 3 a satellite broadcast license (an "alternative strategy to expand our promotion of Canadian musicians"), bnw is over. My understanding is that all of this satellite business will be happening out of vancouver... brave new waves comes from the montreal studios. I don't know if that's a factor as well.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:46 (4 years ago) Permalink

Reading that over, it sounds a bit shakey and not yet a done deal. Let us join hands and pray.

superultramega (superultramarinated), Monday, 28 March 2005 18:48 (4 years ago) Permalink

I cut off the last part of that letter by accident:

I hope that you will continue to tune in and to enjoy the programming
we offer, and that you will support our endeavours in promoting the best
in emerging Canadian talent more effectively and to wider audiences.

Sincerely,

Jane Chalmers
Vice President, English Radio
CBC - English Radio Management

That would be Jane_Chalmers@cbc.ca if you feel like voicing your concern.

How ironic, I happen to have the 15th anniversary actually. It was really fun, and I even have it in MP3, so if you're interested, Schmidtite, just say the word. I'd love more Bambury things myself, can't get enough of those, especially since I dusted off the few I had last year.

I'm only 35 years old but I have been a fan of this show for something like 17 years! I used to stay up all night and miss my CEGEP courses back then. I would be willing to organize manifestations to keep this show alive! It is so professional. Did you notice how Patty improved her voice tremendously since her first shows? They really teach them how to speak - Bambury's voice was so incredibly good, it's really what got me hooked the first time I tuned in!!

Is there any way we could start a real Forum? Would anybody be interested?

Last question...I tuned in on Friday's show (February 11, 2006) and missed the entire name for an amazing electronica track. I think Patty said "The Blow Dough" but I can't find that band on Google. Does anybody have more details?

No, but I can tell you that Bambury was the interview subject (I don't remember who interviewed him; it was a woman, but not Patti) and he gave a neat history of BNW up to that point, and the profile was on the procedure of trepanation, and involved playing songs aboot having a hole in your head.

I remember when he left, he said he'd been there for ten years. Patti must be coming up on her 11th anniversary, right?

this is a quote from an interview with patti in discorder ,I got a call in January of ‘91, which is the year I graduated, to come audition to be a potential fill–in host. There was like six or seven of us who went down to the CBC building, horrified. Totally the scariest, most nightmarish radio experience of my life. You had to sit in this giant big room by yourself, and you didn’t have – you didn’t work the board or anything. You couldn’t touch any buttons. You’re “on,” “off,” and you get this totally stiff script. It was terrible. I stopped and rewrote everything.
I got a call a few months later ... No, actually, I did four days in June of that year, which was very, very scary and difficult. I would come and hang out, and just be fascinated by the whole thing. It’s that work behind the scenes which one doesn’t see that I’ve always been a big fan of. I got short–term contracts to be a writer/programmer which I did until ‘95, when I took over hosting.

I have tons of respect for Patti Schmidt. I have heard her early stuff, as well the more recent shows, and her voice really has improved. Also, just like Brent, she knows more about music then I'll probably ever forget, haha. I really wish I could hear the show more often these days, but working full time makes it really difficult. I'm glad that after all these years this show still doesn't suck. Takes a special kind of show to never truly suck for over two decades, haha.

Just so you know, I've first heard this show about 15 years ago, and immediately soaked up the music, barely passing 8th grade as a result, haha. Then I was without it for a few years due to a move, then went back to it around 1999, and have been listening off and on since. Now, I already have some of Patti's shows in my archive, but I'd love to have more of Brent's, especially his last, since I've been looking for that for ages. I'll never forget the night he introduced me to a crazy track by Mr Bungle, "Quote Unquote". 14 years later, it's STILL in my head.

Well for me BNW was a major discovery in 1999 its everything started 3 years before in 1996 all the music playing on the radio was boring i started searching for new and original music

It took me 3 year and in february 1999 i actualy discoverd BNW when i woke up during the night about 1:30 there where this crazy bleepy noise music on the radio well i actualy went crazy over wath ever was playing i actualy stayd awake up until 4AM to lisnen to BNW then

After i got the information on when this program played and started to record every single episode of BNW on vcr tape today i got so many BNW tape in my archive that it fill a whole shelf that expand the whole lenght of my room

Bnw was so influantial that at the end of the year 2000 i started making my own bleeping and noisy music.

Yo hope that Bnw will last for the next generation to hear and and you rock Patti Schmidt.

Ok, Here's my BNW story. In 1985 (highschool for me) a friend who knew way more about music than I told me about a reggae show on NPR out of Detroit. I lived in Sarnia and was always searching the dial for music as I hated all the top40 and classic rock. So what I found was BNW and also WLBS, a punk/new wave Detroit station.

I really took off on BNW and have been listening off and on ever since. I even listened while living in Japan by using the live stream.

Here's a tip for everyone who can't stay up to listen to it. There's a program called Total Recorder that lets you record whatever is going on in your computer's audio mix. So either you tune in to the audio stream or plug your radio/stereo into the computer's audio input. Total Recorder lets you schedule when it starts recording so you set it up to record Monday to Friday 12AM to 4AM (or whatever in your time zone). The files are big but you can save them as MP3s. Then either listen to them on your computer, burn them on to CD, or put them on a MP3 player. You can even edit the files and make mixed tapes/CDs! Just like in high school!

Anyway, BNW is an incredibly important show. There is nothing like it anywhere in the world. If you know otherwise please share.

Happy listening!

Well, I'm a newbie to this board, but not to the show, I've been listening on and off for about 15 years, so between junior high and adulthood. I haven't heard anything as good as this before, and it's awesome that it has survived for so long. I have heard the smooth tones of both Brent and Patti, so I can't say which host was better. They're both excellent. And the music, too brilliant.

I have recently began to archive the recent shows in MP3 with my software, but I'd love to hear some of Brent's again (because at the time, I was in rough shape and tapes were a pain to get a hold of), and someone here mentioned his last show, I'd love to get a hold of that myself. Anyway, if some of you do have some of the older stuff (late 80s early 90s), give me a holler.

Well, to be honest, I'm thinking of building an MP3 archive of this show on my iPod. I found a few eps while cleaning the homestead, digitized these over a decade old bad boys, and now I put them on a loop to and from work. Bliss. Ah, the days of not caring about getting up for school tomorrow, because nobody liked me there, haha. Coming home late from work, and nodding off 20 mins into the more recent shows online, un-bliss.

Well, tonight is the final night of Brave New Waves. Goes without saying, it's going to be difficult to hold back the tears. According to the regional director of CBC Montreal who emailed me the other day in reponse to my well wishes for Patti Schmidt, "Patti has assembled a show of highlights you may enjoy as a finale for the program." I highly recommend anyone who is, has been, or just became a fan of Brave New Waves to listen tonight and record the show. There is one ray of sunshine in this darkness, and that is:

"Later this spring Patti will launch a podcast which you'll be able to access through our Radio two website."

23 years of innovative, rule-breaking radio ends in 11 hours....

Well, I just finished listening to it, ending rather beautifully with one of William Basinki's diintegation loops playing for nearly an hour or so. It's all rather unfortunate to see it go. . . it never really occurred to me untill today that no longer will I be able to on any given night (and for me nearly each night while going to sleep) be able to just turn on the radio at midnight and know I'll be in good hands for the next four hours.

Sad to see it go and wish I didn't discover it so late, but I am forever grateful for keeping me exposed to a fantastic array of music I surely wouldn't have come across otherwise.

This was just a repeat of the unofficial last show broadcast on May 27, 2007 (a tribute to radio), but this time prefixed by a statement from Patti Schmidt:

This is the final broadcast of Brave New Waves. My name is Patti Schmidt, and it has been my great joy and privilege to have worked on this program for sixteen of its 23 years. My deepest thanks to everyone who stumbled in, and stayed, either by accident or design. When the new Radio 2 schedule launches next week, I'll be hosting the weekend edition of Canada Live, a concert show seven nights a week, 8 to 10pm, highlighting what's on stage across the whole country, from classical to contemporary. I hope you can tune in.

I am using the playlists from:

http://ranta.dyndns.org/BNW/about.html

Along with a lot of videos now available on YouTube and am assembling playlists based on the Brave New Waves playlists. Another YouTube'r will be assembling playlists using the ORIGINAL playlists (IE: Brave New Waves in two different flavors)

The first playlist can be found here:

Other playlists can be found here:

As of November 13, 2009, I had put together 35 playlists starting from January 7, 1999.

The spirit lives on!

Huh. A lovely idea!

Coming back to this thread makes me nostalgic for BNW all over again (as well as Nightlines of course). It's kind of funny -- with the whole internet at our fingertips and sources like The Wire for some of the more experimental music to look for, it still doesn't feel as exciting as sitting there in the dark waiting for whatever came next. I still remember when Brent played the Severed Heads' Dead Eyes Opened EP in its entirety, I had the feeling that I was discovering something important (and from a musical taste development perspective, I certainly was). I don't get that from the net. Too bad.

I still remember the special sessions they had on BNW too - the Sevs and Puppy sessions are still faves.
