one of my favorite Beavis and Butthead moments ever involved them watching a Fabulous T-birds video and Butthead stating something along the lines that if they ever started a band, they would look just like that.

also: their 1981 album is titled "Butt Rockin'"!

apparently they're still together? I can imagine them going over well on the county/state fair circuit.

As far as guitar playing Vaughans go, I always preferred Jimmy. He's less of a show-off.

Tuff Enuff is classic material, that tremelo reverb guitar lick that comes after he he say's "ain't that tuff enuff?" should have been sampled by now....isn't it weird that a bunch of workaday blues dorks like this were once popular music?

So, so, so much better than SRV boringist blues.

another good album title they had was apparently "Different Tacos"

I'll have to agree with this -- while I'm not a fan of the band, I'll take this over Mr. Overrated and Dead. Perhaps the best bar band ever in a 'I will never care about you much but I'd rather this playing than, say, Blueshammer.'

four years pass...

I would have expected more luv for this band on ILM. They covered NRBQ!!

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Friday, 29 February 2008 05:43 (eighteen years ago)

I never liked NRBQ as much as I wanted to like them, but I saw Fabulous Thunderbirds live outside once in Austin, and they were a good band to eat fajitas to! Always hated their stodgy VH-1 hit about being tuff, though; it didn't even seem like decent pool-playing music. But I should reinvestigate them sometime.

(Don't get me wrong about NRBQ -- I like a few songs by them a lot, especially "Me And The Boys," and I probably should have kept a couple LPs by them. I even saw them play on a New York Blues Cruise boat once! Just never understood the worship they seem to inspire. But I've been on a pub-rock kick lately, so maybe I'd like them more if I listened to them now.) (Also never knew they had lots of fans on ILM; has there ever been a thread? Maybe I'll revive one.)

Okay, I just did:

NRBQ Classic or Dud

This is one of those weird bands that are like royalty in Texas (or at least were in the mid 90s), and are otherwise just (classic) rock staples that you kinda ignore elsewhere in the US. "Tuff Enough" used to drive me crazy but now I love it, good riff, minor league baseball staple; also seek out the ad version of "Tuff Enough" that they play(ed) in Texas, "You Better Not Mess With Texas", where the lead guy sings that whole phrase instead of "Tuff Enough". It's awkward but badass, kinda what I think of this band now.

I have an affinity for the early Chrysalis LPs. Their version of the old R&B tune "Rich Woman" is pretty cool is a swampy "New Orleans" R&B kinda way. Always dug Jimmy Vaughan's guitar playing - he gravitated towards the old Excello vibe, instead of the guitar heroics of Jimi like his bro.

from 1985! look how bored Kim Wilson looks already with the song...he probably had an inkling that he'd still be jamming it in 2009.
