I know there's been a bunch of comps coming out recently, like DJ Hell's, but there's a bunch of comps from that period that used to be all over the place. Look at:

I think "deutscheland" is the really common one all my friends seem to have.

verschwende deine jugend (waste your youth). two cds with the best of german punk and new wave 1977-83. excellent essential compilation.

in the comp i mentioned there is not the charts stuff though. it's more the challenging experimental side of new wave. things like neubauten, fehlfarben, palais schaumburg, der plan etc.

...and therefore not really NDW, as almost all of the folks in Teipel's book of the same name bitch and moan about how NDW spoiled their lovely little scene (except Annette Humpe who jumped right in and folks like DAF and the Neubauten who had other fish to fry).

Tell me about NDW, and some songs I should hear, please!

I mentioned this elsewhere but I have heard rumour of a NDW band called Fraulein Menke which obv I think must be the best band EVER. I would be interested in hearing them for such and larffing and larffing and seeing if Dr Vick would too.

Vershwende Deine Jugend never fails to amaze me whenever I play it. Essential.

I got to Berlin (where I lived for a year) just as NDW was fading, so always feel as though I was late to the party. With that in mind, here are some of my favourite poppier, latter-day, NDW-lite hits:

Codo - DÖF (Tauchen-Prokopetz)
Herz Ist Trumpf - Trio
Irgendwo, Irgendwie, Irgendwann - Nena
You - Boytronic
Zarah (Ich Weiss, Es Wird Ein Wunder Gescheh'n) - Nina Hagen
Bruttosozialprodukt - Geiersturzflug

As for "true" NDW....?

I should have added:

Finally - La Loora (The most grafitti-ed band in Berlin, 1983-84. English translation done by a mate of mine.)

Hip Hop Bommi Bop - The Incredible T.H. Scratchers feat Freddie Love (actually Die Toten Hosen feat Fab Five Freddy)

Just played the wonderful "Fred Vom Jupiter" and realized I don't have any NDW compilations. I've heard a few but haven't found one that's consistently high-quality. Recommendations?

imo those all suck, sorry

plus, they all seem to have essentially the same tracklisting, so any single one would probably suffice

best NDW overview I ever saw was on a defunct MP3 blog called Mein Walkman Ist Kaput, turned me on to awesome stuff like the P1/E records and Andy Giorbino

Well, sleeve, you did have a point that they all had a core of the same tracks. I listened to all those comps I listed and picked up the 3cd NDW set, supplemented it with the New Wave German Club Class-X 2 disc comp and then cherry-picked songs from the others. But I disagree that they suck, though there's plenty of weaker tracks that I filtered out.

A supplement to the bigger '1981' box set of post-punk in, unsurprisingly, 1981.

Looks great, though a bunch of those aren't German, of course.

Bear Family is taking a crack at creating a definitive NDW overview with four 2CD sets. The first three are out, any thoughts?
