fuck, there's some nice stuff in there. i probably listen to more stuff from '92 these days than any other it seems.

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:22 (twenty years ago) link

ur, actually, "Get Ready For This" was '91... haha, it had to happen. It's going on my 91 comp anyway..

Otherwise, lookin' good there.

(Why do all my CDR Go! comments sounds like pick-up lines?)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:23 (twenty years ago) link

(Also, add Uncle Wiggly's "There Was An Elk" to that huge Mind The Gap list.. heh heh)

donut bitch (donut), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:24 (twenty years ago) link

Fuck, you're right re: "Get Ready". And to think I could've worked "I Can't Dance" in there!!!

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:31 (twenty years ago) link

Really nice work, Chris. This is one of the first comps that feels like an instant nostalgic trip for me; I was 13 in 1992 and remember LOTS of these songs from Top 40 radio. BUT -- and I guess I haven't been paying too much attention to Donutbitch's rules -- a couple of the singles that charted in '93 feel out of place to me (Ice Cube, and especially Stone Temple Pilots). Otherwise it looks great.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:32 (twenty years ago) link

Make that "Twilight Zone" then. >:|

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:32 (twenty years ago) link

This comp also makes me want to download "Constant Craving" by k.d. lang, and "Strawberry Letter 23" by Tevin Campbell.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:35 (twenty years ago) link

(You like how I said that without saying "You should've included..." ?)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:36 (twenty years ago) link

Thanks Jay. I was originally going to use "Sex Type Thing" since it was the first single but opted for the biggest song on the record. If the 1993 C700 wants "Plush" we'll swap for posterity.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:37 (twenty years ago) link

Kenan's 1993 doesn't have any STP. In the long run, I'd rather you put on "Plush" than "Sex Type Thing " (since it's a better song, too) -- I just associate it with a different time (being played on rock radio alongside songs from Vs. and Siamese Dream), is all I'm saying.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:42 (twenty years ago) link

(Oh, and how can I get a copy of this!)

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:43 (twenty years ago) link

Hugely embarrassing slip-up: forgot "T.R.O.Y." Christ.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 05:43 (twenty years ago) link

"Black Metallic" at 69? It'd be a long, long way higher up on my list. ;-)

heligolander, Tuesday, 6 January 2004 09:11 (twenty years ago) link

Nice, nice. I like the Cube and STP entries. I could do without suddenly remembering ghastly things like 'Life Is A Highway' and Ugly Kid Joe, though. I know almost none of the indie stuff in there (if it even is indie!). I only miss ... well nothing, except for maybe some Army Of Lovers.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 09:37 (twenty years ago) link

The Mover - Illuminated
Nookie - Give A Little Love
Blame - Music Takes You

Awesome 3 - Don't Go
Krome & Time - Sound is for the Underground
Manix - I Can't Stand It
Acen - Close your eyes
CLS - Can You Feel It
Ultracynic - nothing is forever
Psychotropic - Hypnosis (sl2 remix)
Bass Selective - Blow Out Part Two

gareth (gareth), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 10:24 (twenty years ago) link

A nice year -- this list generates a lot of nostalgia for me. I'd try to work in "Countdown," from Lindsay Buckingham's solo album.

John Fredland (jfredland), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 12:44 (twenty years ago) link

My Legendary Girlfriend was actually from 1990, wasn't it? You could always put on O.U. instead.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 13:53 (twenty years ago) link

Spiritualized 'Medication' -- surely 1995?

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 13:56 (twenty years ago) link

heh, charlton otm

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago) link

Spiritualized 'Medication' -- surely 1995?

No, it was released in its original take/mix as a standalone single towards the end of 1992.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 14:22 (twenty years ago) link

Is it on the 'Compleat Works' thingy (which I own but haven't gotten round to)?

Enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 14:52 (twenty years ago) link

Yes Enrique, it's on that. I went with it since it was pretty widely available on import and so much of Laser Guided Melodies had been kicking around since early 1990 on singles.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:11 (twenty years ago) link

Another good one. INXS' "Not Enough Time" would've been my pick. Also, I think Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" actually charted in '92 due to Wayne's World.

dleone (dleone), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 15:46 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah it was #2 or #3 for most of the Spring if I remember right, but, as with Ce Ce Peniston's "Finally" and KLF's "What Time is Love (America)?", which all charted hugely in '92, I left "Bohemian Rhapsody" for the year it first broke through - it's on the 1975 C700 which is in here somewhere. Shoulda put the thrash version of "3 AM Eternal" on here.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 16:11 (twenty years ago) link

the caff 7" of 'my legendary girlfriend' was released in '92

the surface noise (electricsound), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:22 (twenty years ago) link

And was an NME Single of the Week.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 01:46 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, but the 12 inch was definitely 1990 - and wasn't it THAT which was the NME single of the week. 'Sides, the vinyl only has a live version on it and it's a bit pants.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:06 (twenty years ago) link

By which, I mean the 7-inch has a live version that pales in comparison to the real version, as featured on the 12-inch and the Greatest Album of All Time.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:07 (twenty years ago) link

re: Chris Ott's post

Excellent, where'd you get that list? i definitely definitely have to agree w/: Curve, Suede, U2, Lush, orbital, and ELECTRONIC! i LOOOOVE "Disappointed", part of why i got the Cool World Soundtrack.

whoever (whoever), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 07:56 (twenty years ago) link

Das Boot! That's a great song.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 08:03 (twenty years ago) link

My friend's older brother came back from germany with that CD and we ended up just randomly spouting things like "I wanna be a Kennedy! I wanna fuck Marilyn Monroe!" at each other for months.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 08:04 (twenty years ago) link

MIA: Blur - Popscene...

Vasquesz, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 13:22 (twenty years ago) link

Matthew Sweet's "I've Been Waiting" was a '92 single, since I assume "Girlfriend" gets the nod for '91.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 20:00 (twenty years ago) link

four years pass...

yeah, 1992
