I don't know if I wholeheartedly agree since just over half of the tracks on Schaffelfieber 2 were Kompakt-proper -- and out of those, only the Orb and Mikkel Metal tracks do anything for me. They released a lot of their best '04 material after Total 5; I think that's the greater factor. I posted an alternate comp that reflects this somewhere else, but I can't recall exactly where.*
I'd rank the Totals 3-4-2-1-5 as well, though 4 and 2 are a tie. I'm partial to 2 'cause that's when I started paying attention (i.e. the point at which Teenage Mutant Nihilist 313 Drug Counselor says they became tiresome.)
*While I was sick a couple weeks back, I actually went through the trouble of making alternate versions of all the Totals. I knew they had left some of their best tracks off the comps, but I had no idea how many until then.

― Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 11 January 2004 14:51 (twenty years ago) link
The Benjamin Wild one is on his recent album for Source. It's rather subdued -- soft keyboard melodies, light shuffling (but not shuffle) rhythm -- and the male vocalist whispers a few lines: "You never want to be touched/You never want to be...," etc. His voice is no louder than Dirk Leyers' in the Closer Musik tune.

I have quite a few tracks off the first Finney list but am looking forward to tracking down stuff off the new Andy K one.
Is it assumable that these are sitting somewhere on soulseek?
That would be supper cool

I have never listened to a Kompakt Total release! is 3 still the one to start with?
― 26 Mixes Focaccia (Stevie D), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 20:53 (fourteen years ago) link
I like 5 and 6.
― Moka, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 21:30 (fourteen years ago) link
Sorry, I meant 6 and 7... probably 6.
― Moka, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 21:31 (fourteen years ago) link
I'm a relative newcomer to the Kompakt Total series (mid-decade convert, casual-to-obsessive fan of most things on the label) and I have and enjoy Total 6, 8, 9, 10 (skipped 7 for some unknown reason). Still plan on digging into the first five when I happen across them in stores, used or otherwise. But those named are all enjoyable to some degree!
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 21:49 (fourteen years ago) link
5 and 1 are the worst. 2 and 10 the least interesting imho. You can't go wrong picking any of the other 6.
― Moka, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 21:54 (fourteen years ago) link
2 is awesome!
I would rank them:
3 > 4 = 2 > 7 > 6 > 1 = 5 = 8 = 9
Haven't heard 10.

― 26 Mixes Focaccia (Stevie D), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 22:43 (fourteen years ago) link
9 and 10 probably have the lowest ratio of good to bad tracks. Part of me wishes they'd go back to a single disc.
Can't go wrong with 3 and 4. I love 6, 7 and 8 too.
― lou, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 22:52 (fourteen years ago) link
3 is my absolute favorite, kinda right when they hit their groove between the washy ambient to minimal krauthaus to the stiff-but-dirty electrochill (referring to Closer Musik "Departures" which is 100% my fave track on here and a hell of a way to close a comp, also: it makes a hello of a transition into the 7+ minute ext mix of Debbie Deb's "When I Hear Music"... ok enuff giving away my secrets!).

That was MRI, back on Mille Plateaux's "Electric Ladyland Clickhop Version 1.0" (the start of a series that never went anywhere?) – the track is "As A Child I Could Fly Without Wings". Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyAVxx9bQi8

So, I ordered the vinyl version of TOTAL 14 and I'm extremely dissapointed that this just includes 7 tracks and the exclusive ones at that which are nowhere as good as the others. :S Is this a usual thing for the TOTAL comps? This sucks.

Also it was stupid expensive and I thought it was worth it because of all the songs included. What a sham.
― Moka, Sunday, 24 August 2014 23:22 (nine years ago) link
I'm about halfway through listening to 14 (CD version, vinyl is for suckers) and I'm liking it a lot. The mood seems a little darker than previous volumes, like EBM/industrial is coming back as an influence (something I've noticed all over the place, starting with the Nitzer Ebb-isms on Yeezus). A lot of female vocalists this time out, too.

I think the into version being a compact (har har) version of he cd is nothing new. I know it's the case which at least Total 10, which is the newest one I have.
I've mostly kind of ignored them from 7 on, given kompakt's general inconsistency, but now I'm wondering if any of those editions particularly hold up...
― ed.b, Monday, 25 August 2014 04:19 (nine years ago) link
This one is pretty good, first CD especially. 'Wunderkammer' by Blond:ish is probably the highlight, but I really like the opening track and the Superpitcher one with the ridiculously elongated vowel sound.
Fucking atrocious vocal on the Terranova track, mind,
― Matt DC, Monday, 25 August 2014 11:05 (nine years ago) link
Maybe worth noting that on Total 12, the Superpitcher track on the LP was different from the one on the CD – it had a long sample of a drunken Dylan Thomas reading a poem that wasn't on the CD version, which was completely instrumental.
― with hidden noise, Monday, 25 August 2014 15:24 (nine years ago) link
Yeah this is sorta making me wish I hadn't ignored the last seven Totals or whatever
― ugh (lukas), Monday, 25 August 2014 17:01 (nine years ago) link
'Wunderkammer' by Blond:ish
See, this would have me worried, because when I listened to the EP that it's from all I heard was immacutely-produced yet instantly-forgettable generic tech-house. I haven't spent enough time with the compilation as a whole but on first impressions it is inconsisently good.
