To me, these were obviously the albums of the year from '99 to '03. Did anyone else pick the exact same combination or is my taste not so obvious after all?

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

YOU ARE ILM

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Your DNA should be cloned

mentalist (mentalist), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Jaxx, Avalanches, Streets, Outkast/Jaxx

i am MORE ILM!

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

How come you only have 4 albums for 5 years?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 12:01 (twenty-two years ago)

good point - my '00 pick was Garnier

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 12:02 (twenty-two years ago)

What of Daft Punk?

Schwingung (Damian), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 12:10 (twenty-two years ago)

oh dear i'm probably quite ilm, too. it's not something i really aspire to, but then again isn't it just a question of having reasonable taste...

albums of the noughties:

2000: Luomo - Vocalcity
2001: Avalanches - Since I Left You
2002: MRI - All That Glitters/The Streets - OPM
2003: Dizzee - Boy In Da Corner

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 12:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Certainly not me:

2000: Coldplay
2001: Travis
2002: Doves
2003: Super Furry Animals

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Clientele, Daft Punk, Strebts, probably Junior Senior

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I think my adoration of "Discovery" and "Stankonia" is pretty ILM btw

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

If your only reference to the music of the last five years was ILM you'd think these artists were legends

Dizzee
Wiley
Luomo
Junior boys

All of them really are quite good, it's just weird that everyone here seem so obsessed with them.

Jim Janse, Tuesday, 30 December 2003 12:56 (twenty-two years ago)

How come you only have 4 albums for 5 years?

Er, right. I forgot 2001: N*E*R*D.

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

2002 Horsepower Productions "In Fine Style" / Cinematic Orchestra "Everyday"

2003 Dizzee Rascal "Boy In Da Corner"

martin (martin), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i hated discovery when i 1st heard it but after a couple of years i have totally re-evaluted it and now think it's brilliant

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave I have a few things in common... Was you surpised to love Broadcast this year, Dave? Is Kano your top tip for 2004? Were Adaptation and iPirates of the Carribean your favourite films?

JoB (JoB), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"iPirates"

Ooh does Macintosh make those?

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

2001 - Plaid
2002 - Lambchop/Wilco

My last 3 years' singles picks makes me hella ILM:
2001: Get UR Freak On
2002: Freak Like Me
2003: No Good Advice

Nick H (Nick H), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Wilco, White Stripes, Fugazi, Desaperecdios, Yeah Yeah Yeahs

I AM ROCKISM

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, replace Wilco with LeTigre. Maybe I'm not rockism after all.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

A Strange and Isolated Place
Mastered by Guy at the Exchange
Neon Golden
I'm what's there to show that something's missing

I think this proves I like longer album titles than anyone else, as well as proving I'm a drippy bastard.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

my albums and singles (w/hindsight):

1999: Built to Spill, Keep It Like a Secret and Armand Van Helden ft. Roland Clark, "Flowerz"
2000: Luomo, Vocalcity and OutKast, "B.O.B."
2001: The Avalanches, Since I Left You and Missy Elliott, "Get Ur Freak On"
2002: The Streets, Original Pirate Material and Nas, "Made You Look"
2003: Basement Jaxx, Kish Kash and Panjabi MC ft. Jay-Z, "Beware of the Boys (Remix)"

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Er, right. I forgot 2001: N*E*R*D.

I think that one negates the quality of all your other choices.

David Allen (David Allen), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM is bonkers.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Basement Jaxx, Luomo*, Basement Jaxx, Metro Area, Matthew Dear

*This could just as easily be Black Box Recorder or Radiohead

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Mmm, mine went something like: Basement Jaxx, Outkast*, Daft Punk, Akufen/Lawrence, Luomo.

* with hindsight Vocalcity, but I'm not cheating ;).

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

if we're doing ilm consensus picks, mag. fields and fennesz deserve mentions

Sonny A. (Keiko), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Chemical Brothers, Avalanches, Daft Punk, Clinic, Basement Jaxx.

Astralwerks has not sent me a check as of yet.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Tuesday, 30 December 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

1999 - Mouse On Mars "Niun Niggung"
2000 - Lambchop "Nixon"
2001 - Mum "Yesterday Was Dramatic..."

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 05:38 (twenty-two years ago)

1999: Built to Spill - Keep it Like a Secret
2000: Kid A - Radiohead
2001: The Strokes - Is This It
2002: The Streets - Original Pirate Material
2003: Luomo - The Present Lover

Is this growth? I think it is.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 05:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Note: that's the best-of list I came up with just right this moment. Not the one I forwarded at the time.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

What I would have picked at the time:

2003 - Cat Power - You Are Free
2002 - Neko Case - Blacklisted - now, I'm leaning toward S-K, One Beat
2001 - White Stripes - White Blood Cells - CanOx now
2000 - Sleater-Kinney - All Hands on the Bad One - poss. the same - what a terrible year
1999 - The Old 97's - Fight Songs

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 06:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Blacklisted is a great fucking album. Top five of 2002, I'm thinking. Right behind The Streets and... um... Hem.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 06:11 (twenty-two years ago)

And why can't everyone just swallow it and admit that Kid A was clearly the best album of 2000?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

If the entire album had sounded like "The National Anthem," then yes. But it didn't.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 06:16 (twenty-two years ago)

My least favorite track. But it's 2003 now, so this argument is going nowhere fast.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

1999: Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs
2000: Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele
2001: Missy Elliott - Miss E... So Addictive
2002: Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
2003: Exploding Hearts - Guitar Romantic

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

1999: Magnetic Fields: 69 Love Songs
2000: Radiohead: Kid A
2001: Radiohead: Amnesiac
2002: Wire: Read & Burn 01
2003: is not over yet, dammit

Douglas (Douglas), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 06:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave I have a few things in common... Was you surpised to love Broadcast this year, Dave? Is Kano your top tip for 2004? Were Adaptation and iPirates of the Carribean your favourite films?
-- JoB (jobwi...), December 30th, 2003 8:53 AM.

1999: Eyes Wide Shut
2000: Esther Kahn
2001: A.I. Artificial Intelligence
2002: Femme Fatale
2003: Gerry (so far anyways...)

Am I ILF?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 06:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I'm pretty damned houseILM, anyways...

1999: Armand Van Helden
2000: Lazy Dog
2001: Daft Punk
2002: Crydamoure comp.
2003: Basement Jaxx

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 06:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Gerry? For serious? Once again, I'm asking an incredulous question, not passing judgement. Tell me why I should see that.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't want to derail the thread, but I will tell you that it's fucking gorgeous, and I also don't buy the easy critical reading of the film as minimalistic for its' own sake. It's the type of movie that's got far more going on for its subtextual goings-on (gay marquee stars? schizoid passion play? survivalist absurdism? Van Sant absolving himself once and for all of his Penny Marshall period?)

Go ahead and give it a shot.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 07:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I should admit that I've seen, like, only 10 (mostly carefully chosen) films so far this year. Russian Ark, Ten, La Commune, Kill Bill, and I suppose Mystic River were all pretty great too.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 07:30 (twenty-two years ago)

2000: Kent, Hagnesta Hill
2001: Bran Van 3000, Discosis
2002: Shivaree, Rough Dreams
2003: Dannii Minogue, Neon Nights

Damned if I can remember 1999.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 08:18 (twenty-two years ago)

1999: Innerzone Orchestra - Programmed
2000: Dead Prez - Let's Get Free
2001: Tahir - Homecoming
2002: Eve - Eve-olution
2003: Luomo - The Present Lover

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Or the alternative list:

1999: Divine Styler - Directrix
2000: Two Lone Swordsmen - Tiny Reminders
2001: Dusted - When We Were Young
2002: Recloose - Cardiology
2003: Majesticons - Beauty Party

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 09:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Going back through the archives of my website...

1998: Good Humor - Saint Etienne
1999: Temperamental - Everything But The Girl
2000: Mama's Gun - Erykah Badu
2001: A Camp - A Camp
2002: We Love Life - Pulp
2003: Frank - Amy Winehouse

LondonLee (LondonLee), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

1999: Piano Magic
2000: Radiohead
2001: Radiohead
2002: Neko Case (Notwist an extremely close second)
2003: Radiohead

Well, don't I look boring...

Melissa W (Melissa W), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Van Sant absolving himself once and for all of his Penny Marshall period?

Finding Forrester is right below Rounders on the list of movies I've seen the most thanks to cable TV.

Sean Connery as an alcoholic JD Salinger, mentoring fiction prodgy Lebron James - how can it go wrong?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

prodigy

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno. Van Sant without even so much as a hint of queer subtext is sort of pointless to me. Perhaps maybe it could've gone in the opposite direction. Maybe if it featured Sean slapping some titties around I would've thought it more interesting.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

d/r 1999
Immersion
Oren Ambarchi
Derek Bailey
Head Phone Over Tone

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 31 December 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

1999: Tori Amos, To Venus And Back and Destiny's Child, "Jumpin' Jumpin'"
2000: Eminem, The Marshall Mathers LP and Eminem feat. Dido, "Stan"
2001: Aaliyah, Aaliyah* and Missy Elliott, "Get Ur Freak On"
2002: Sleater-Kinney, One Beat and Missy Elliott, "Work It"
2003: Dizzee Rascal, Boy In Da Corner and tATu, "All The Things She Said"

*this was a fucking vintage year and on any other day I could call Missy Elliott, Meanwhile Back In Communist Russia, Princess Superstar or Gillian Welch my favourite.
