I am spinning Sun Kil Moon now and no doubt this is one is great inmho. Anyone else like it? Which Kozelek should I get next?

Jim Reckling (Jim Reckling), Saturday, 20 December 2003 02:45 (twenty years ago) link

The very first Red House Painters, if you haven't it.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 20 December 2003 02:55 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, Down Colorful Hill is nothing short of amazing...everything that followed, though, seems kind of bland (until Sun Kil Moon, that is).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 20 December 2003 03:00 (twenty years ago) link

For me, Kozelek is a great lyricist, and there's something about his voice that I can't get enough of. So having said that, I really don't think you could go wrong with RHP material. There's a lot out there, but aside from Songs from a Blue Guitar (an album I actually enjoy quite a bit, but would not call this a starting point for building a RHP collection) I don't think you can go wrong. Also, the two Kozelek solo albums are really great, too. I really love White Christmas as well, though I don't know how easy that is to find (it's a live album that was supposedly limited to 5000).

I agree with Down Colorful Hill as a good starting point, and from there, go for the s/t Roller Coaster album, then Ocean Beach. See what you think at that point. If you love what you've heard, then dive into the solo stuff, the other s/t album, and maybe even Old Ramon. Before you know it, you'll be dying to hear the demos on disc 2 of the Retrospective (am I getting ahead of myself?). One thing I'll mention is that RHP is, for the most part, far mellower and slower paced than Sun Kil Moon.

For those RHP fans who already have a collection started, you NEED to get the Shanti Project CD Vol. 1, with the four RHP songs on it. THere's a demo version of Smoke (which was later released on Old Ramon) that is far superior to the studio version, and it just blows me away every time.

I had totally and completely given up on MK until this album, which suprised me greatly. I liked Down Colorful Hill a lot but every album after that kind of left me a little bored. SKM is great.

Another album that hasn't been talked about too much, I've been listening to it practically daily for the last few weeks. Damn, "Floating", "Gentle Moon", "Carry Me Ohio." Beautiful, classic Kozelek.

Colin O, Friday, 20 February 2004 22:53 (twenty years ago) link

classic. I may like it more in its entirety than any RHP full-length.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 20 February 2004 23:06 (twenty years ago) link

it's the best thing kozelek has done since the rollercoaster album, certainly (although i really like Ocean Beach, the ratio of classic songs on SKM is higher). I still think of it as an RHP record though and think it's stupid he changed the name.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Friday, 20 February 2004 23:09 (twenty years ago) link

Does anyone know a website where the lyrics to this disk are posted? I can't seem to find any. As per usual, there is some stuff that I just cannot understand on this disc.

Specifically, does anyone know for sure what the first line of the cd is? I got in an argument with a friend about it. I say the first line is "Cassius Clay was hated more than Sonny Liston." He says it's "Cassius Clay was hit more than Sonny Liston." I like mine better and think it makes more sense in context.

Anyone?

And, I agree with whoever said that this is actually better than any RHP album. It's just brilliant.

Apparently Kozelek is releasing an album of all Modest Mouse covers (?!?!??!!!) on November 1st under the Sun Kil Moon name. Anyone heard any of this or even mention of it in an interview or anything? (www.caldoverderecords.com).

he is releasing an album of modest mouse covers?

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 3 October 2005 05:32 (eighteen years ago) link

He just did a cover of Neil Diamond's "Kentucky Woman" for an EP called Songs From the Brown Hotel, which is a companion to the Elizabethtown soundtrack. It may be the most formulaic and bored-sounding song he's ever released, so I'm hoping the Modest Mouse album doesn't fall into the same rut. (He also has a part in the upcoming film Shopgirl, for those who care.)

michaeln (kid loki), Monday, 3 October 2005 14:18 (eighteen years ago) link

is he becoming an actor?

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 3 October 2005 15:30 (eighteen years ago) link

My understanding is that he would love to do more acting work, but either it's not being offered to him or he's not able to take it (my money is on the former). If I'm not mistaken, this is his third speaking role in five years, and the other two were in Almost Famous and Vanilla Sky (Cameron Crowe is a big fan; his Vinyl imprint has put out some Koz stuff on, uh, vinyl). At this point he's really no more than a glorified extra, and that's probably never going to change.

michaeln (kid loki), Monday, 3 October 2005 17:03 (eighteen years ago) link

i think its the former too just b/c he comes off as rather somnambulistic (sp?)- atleast recently...while on stage and in Almost Famous. nice though to get to see him in movies (the only reason i'd ever rent Vanilla Sky).

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 3 October 2005 17:39 (eighteen years ago) link

note: i love how somnambulistic he is...just didn't think mass public would be as excited about it.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 3 October 2005 17:45 (eighteen years ago) link

the "mass public" has no fucking idea who he is. this is not a rapper turned actor sitution here, folks.

i think i shall just stop posting

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 3 October 2005 18:10 (eighteen years ago) link

I look at it as a relationship where crowe is kozelek's benefactor. didn't crowe start casting him after the IRS came knocking? also, as far as being a "glorified extra", he certainly wasn't in almost famous. he was in that one quite a bit and later referred to it as an obscene amount of money, if i remember correctly...

my name is john. i reside in chicago. (frankE), Monday, 3 October 2005 18:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I'd be surprised if he had more than five lines, and even the lines he had were like, "When are we gonna eat?" He mostly stood around playing bass or watching as Jason Lee and the other guy argued. Perhaps my definition of "glorified" allows for a bit more glory than yours, though. (FWIW, in Vanilla Sky, he is credited as "Dude, Fix Your Face Guy," so I wouldn't rent it with any great hope of gauging his acting prowess.) I hope he did make obscene money for his involvement in both films, and I agree about Crowe being his benefactor. (Although it makes me wonder: Why not put "Kentucky Woman" on the real Elizabethtown sndtrk? Give the guy a little exposure? It's not a bad version, just dull be Koz's standards.)

the album of modest mouse covers is gorgeous, and I'm not a modest mouse fan AT ALL. prettiest thing Kozelek has done since Ocean Beach. Originally I thought it was all going to be solo acoustic but about half the songs have a band on them.

I'm really glad I never actually bought any Modest Mouse releases (well aside from one 12" they did as a collaboration with another band I care a lot more about called 764-Hero) because that way I can listen to this without any prior knowledge. MM always bothered me a bit - a German friend of mine put it best, that they came across as "a little too clever". But by the same token I can't say I haven't heard some MM songs on the radio every now and then that sounded pretty good.

Jena (JenaP), Sunday, 23 October 2005 04:30 (eighteen years ago) link

I've got some real mixed feelings about this one. I like Kozelek's style in most situations, but ideally I want it to be HIS SONGS. Nevertheless, some of the twists and turn of melody/lyrics are interesting here. It's just not my ideal. I want it to be HIS SONGS.

Can anyone comment on how this might compare to the AC/DC covers album? That's like the ONLY RHP/Kozelek thing I never owned.

Bimble The Nimble, Jumped Over A Thimble! (Bimble...), Sunday, 23 October 2005 21:38 (eighteen years ago) link

it's a hundred times better (and I like that record; well I REALLY like Rock and Roll Singer, which has some non-covers; I kind of like the other full ac/dc record). this is wonderful though, and (I probably said upthread) I don't like modest mouse at all.

Oh goody goody goody! Someone brought this thread back!!!! I am very happy because I've been meaning to do it for several days now.

What I wanted to say about it was it seemed to grow on me more as I continued to play it, but it still seems like after the first 3 or 4 tracks, it lacks something.

I decided in response to order the AC/DC covers album, just to see what would happen. Might as well own the ONLY CD I don't have of him, right?

I missed him doing "Make Like Paper" when I saw him recently with the singer of Low. I had several reasons to leave early, none of which are worth repeating here, but man. My main regret of this year.

Actually I agree, although it was the very first time I've ever felt attracted to him though I'd seen him once before live a few years back and honestly even though I heard RHP's very first album when it came out I've never felt a thing for him before so go figure. All of a sudden he seemed very attractive that night.

Well you see I believed the very last bus of the night was leaving to take me back home and I was very drunk at this gig. And mostly the only thing that had happened was the lead singer of Low was singing the songs. And at one point some folks in the audience yelled out for Mark to sing more, but he demured. I just didn't get the feeling anything was going to happen, and that bus was going to leave, the last bus...but I couldn't find the right bus stop in the end and so I took a cab anyway which cost me a fortune but what a luxury and then later on, only because of the "INTERNET" I found out that he had done my very *FAVOURITE* RHP song "Make Like Paper" at the gig and I mean...man...normally I wouldn't have even had money for a cab, it just so happened that that night I did. Weird shit. Never mind.

Wow this AC/DC cover of "You Want Blood" is really flipping my wig (some will say Husker Du style *limp wri*st" but not me.)

What is this song on now this is gorgeous - wait let me check the CD case: "Riff Raff" that's it.

Yeah, this AC/DC covers album is definitely better than the Modest Mouse covers album.

Bimble happily opens the door of the motorcar for you (Bimble...), Thursday, 24 November 2005 04:13 (eighteen years ago) link

I should add that I don't know AC/DC very well, as they are one of my most hated bands on the planet.

Bimble happily opens the door of the motorcar for you (Bimble...), Thursday, 24 November 2005 04:25 (eighteen years ago) link

he's fucking sexy. yes, he was very demure at mine too-and the Low guy was all over the place. (and how could you have not thought he was sexy after 'Shock Me'???????!!!????????????????? "keep it in. and keep me high."?????? JESUS CHRIST!) although at some point i stopped being annoyed and thought - WOW, he's sings great! but it was rather annoying in the end b/c i wanted more Mark...much much more Mark. i think the ac/dc covers are probably better too. with the modest mouse stuff, i feel like the lyrics are doing all the work for him. it feels somewhat lazy and leeching of him for some reason to cover such already there songs. whereas with the ac/dc stuff you feel his personality coming through in various ways.

i'm not that interested in ac/dc either.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 24 November 2005 04:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes, but you know Susan...

Honestly.

the last Sun Kil Moon was sooo fucking amazing' I mean just so unreal that if he chickened out and decided to do a half-arsed response to it, out of fear he'd never surpass it, I'm not surprised. Maybe he will come back round to wanting to do an album of his own songs. Give it time. Kate Bush has proved that with some artists, all we need to do is give it time (a LOT of time).

they had a bad system, microphone too low/then squealing when he got louder and even worse, had booked a hardcore band underneath us, so you basically couldn't hear him at all, just the very loud growling noises of their guitar. at one point he asked the audience to stomp their feet while he was playing so we could atleast drown out the rhythm going on below. then he just called it quits and mumbled somethign like "waiting for my acting career to take off. i fuckin hate this fuckin shit. makeshift dressing room." i drove 1 1/2 hours to see him there b/c i wanted to catch him at a small venue. grrrrr. his voice did sound good though/heavy reverb and all (as my boyfriend criticized several times). and it was fun to see his surly personality activate.

I saw him and I was...disappointed. I think it just wasn't a good night for him, for whatever reason. The audience sensed it.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 29 January 2006 05:35 (eighteen years ago) link

Thanks Susan! No I don't mean last night's show - I saw him in Seattle. Like I said, a real disappointment. The weird part is that by the jokes and stage banter, he seemed fully aware of what was wrong with the performance and the atmosphere, and yet he seemed unable to fix it. It was just too comatose, we wanted a little more action (yes I know he's not with a full band but you can still be lively with an acoustic guitar). And his hair is growing out again - bad idea. Keep it short Mark! There was one point where he did one of the songs from Down Colourful Hill and stopped in the middle and said "oh god, will someone help us grow up already?" Some folks in the audience I heard next to me speculated sympathetically that was "already sad when he started". He had admitted early on that he was nervous when he tried to make a joke. I heard a radio interview/performance he did prior to the gig and it was fine. In the end, I just wondered if it wasn't the fact that Modest Mouse came from Seattle that threw him off.

There was one point where he asked the audience how his physique was coming along, heheh. I wanted to yell out about his hair length, but I'm too polite. He's still pretty good at the on stage banter, though. Reading and communicating with an audience has never been a problem for him. One guy next to me yelled out for Free Bird - I said "oh for god's sake" and laughed.

During the interview he did on the radio (KEXP) prior to the gig he mentioned that he saw Morrissey & Bob Dylan as being exceptional lyricists. I thought that was kindof cool. I bet if you go to KEXP's website you can probably still listen to the interview somewhere. It was good.

yeah, i think he's actually somewhat comfortable up there and a part of his sense of humor might be exploring all the uncomfortable shit that might come up and then acting it out...even if he does not feel that way and you don't either. its a silly fun immaturity you might as well indulge in b/c otherwise what are you gonna do..just sit there and play songs and take in the praise night after night? plus, i think artists should get a free pass for acting as neurotic as they need to stopping short of really insulting their fans, whicn i THINK he does. i don't know. i also feel totally guilty in expecting any kind of personality from him ... i mean its his life, i just buy the albums...but i also fully get that when an artist makes an impact, its hard not to want them to fulfill other needs expectations---as retarded as that is. anyway, fwiw (very little!) and in that vein, i like the long hair on him alot.

In fact I don't think I've seen more than one good Koz solo set (and that was actually a SKM show with Phil, someone else, and a string section). But RHP back in the day was something else.

Ghosts Of The Great Highway: One of the best discs of the decade.

I sort of think April is just as good, maybe better.

It was a little more polished, and it lacked some of the raw intensity of GOTGH. But April is also a v., v. good disc.

The new one starts off really well but ultimately I think it might be... bad? Kozelek sounds so petty and cranky.

admiral fells promises or is there some other new one? I didn't care for most of that album actually, it was pretty dull.

Among the Leaves, out soon.

After the masterful "Ghosts Of The Great Highway" (Daniel's comment above OTM) it's been diminishing returns for each release. I didn't even bother with the last one, maybe I'll see if Spotify has it.

April is a very nice album; not as good as Ghosts but it reminded me a lot of Ocean Beach (only not quite as good) and Songs for a Blue Guitar...really more like an RHP album. Admiral Fells just didn't stick with me at all.

heard the new one and it's somewhere in the middle. I like the band songs but some of the solo tracks kind of blow by me. But it has some funny stuff for once; Kozelek can be a funny guy and it shows, at least in the song titles (moderately talented middle aged man.... not much rhymes with everything's perfect all of the time). The song for richard collopy, who was a guitar maker in SF, is pretty touching.
